Truss’s entitlement to £115,000 p.a. for life?

Just when I thought I could not get any angrier -
From the BBC website
Truss as an ex-PM will now be able to claim the Public Duty Costs Allowance (PDCA), currently set at £115,000, which all former prime ministers are entitled to
Former prime ministers are able to draw on the PDCA for any costs that arise as a result of public duties.
Most people have to work at least 35 years to get a full state pension," Ed Davey told LBC radio. "I think working 45 days shouldn't give you a pension that is many many times what ordinary people out there get after a lifetime of work"

I am speechless. ???

Whilst I agree the optics are not good.

This sum of money is for Office Costs, and has to be claimed with receipts as far as I understand.

It is not paid as a monthly sum.

There was a time when you could expect that there would be some chance that the person involved would have the decency not to claim that money after such a short and disastrous time in office. It seems that there is no link between right-leaning Tory and decency any more.

She is entitled to it, but I'm pretty sure I've just heard on the BBC News that she won't be claiming it.

If it must be given as a perk of the job, then it should only be given after someone has worked as PM for a full term. Anything less is being rewarded for being a failure and there have been many of those in the last few years.

Ilovecheese Fri 21-Oct-22 13:15:43

Gordon Brown did not claim it, he is a decent person.

Charleygirl5 Fri 21-Oct-22 14:03:11

I read online before she became PM briefly she had claimed £1000 for energy costs etc. Nice if one could do that.

Surely £115,000 would be insufficient to live on annually/!!!

JaneJudge Fri 21-Oct-22 14:05:07

do you mean sufficient Charleygirl15?confused

The former prime ministers are entitled to claim for necessary office and secretarial costs arising from their special position in public life. In 2020-21, John Major and Tony Blair claimed the maximum allowance; Gordon Brown claimed £114,712; David Cameron claimed £113,423 and Theresa May £57,832.

Gordon did claim, ilovecheese

This is on top of her wage as an MP ...plus her "expenses" which in my mind are eyewatering high.No wonder they are divorced from reality when they can claim for everything they need or want..things that ordinary workers couldn't dream of .Expenses were SUPPOSED to have been dealt with ,then you hear of some MP's still claiming extortionate amounts .Its not acceptable

Just off to hit my head against a wall

"The optics are not good" is funny way of making resistance to an idea seem lame or a bit picky.

Why do we say that now instead of "To anyone with any judgement or morals it is clear this is wrong."?

Language and its use evolves

No question she should refuse to take it. Having just read that it is likely that she will have a resignation honours list - words fail me, honoured for what, and surely she won’t be honoured either!

Sennelier1 Fri 21-Oct-22 14:56:06

I don't think it has to be claimed with proven expenses. This allowance has been created when Margareth Thatcher was "asked" to leave. Her finances were very dire, and that's why this stipend was created, to give an ex PM a decent living. If any expenses have to be proven it will be a formality, a signature will do.

Would Boris get two bites of the cherry?

Grany Fri 21-Oct-22 15:41:32

Truss gets £115,00 per annum

What about William gets over £20 million
Like winning the lottery every year

Lollin Fri 21-Oct-22 16:05:12

Surely they already get paid more than enough for any talks etc that they do as a result of being in such a privileged position, to then take their expenses out of their extra income? But thems the rules and who doesn’t like to break the rules?

Urmstongran Fri 21-Oct-22 16:13:07

If it’s sauce for the goose etc. If I were her I’d say “if Blair is receiving it, I’ll take it too”.

But William can't just resign (well, not easily), neither can his heir, nor his children's children. It's a vocation, a lifetime's commitment.

Actually I don't think anyone with the competence to run the country and lead a party would even want the job in the first place. So I guess there have to be some incentives when they sign up.

Grannynannywanny Fri 21-Oct-22 16:24:32

£115k ex PM allowance for life after 45 abysmal days in the job. This to the woman who opposed “hand outs” to hard working families who are struggling even more now thanks to her and Kwarteng. Seriously, you couldn’t make up this sh** ! I’m heartbroken for my AC and grandchildren and the mess that lies ahead.

Charleygirl5 Fri 21-Oct-22 16:57:14

JaneJudge- I meant insufficient- I think with her lifestyle she would struggle.

Didn’t MT get a state pension to live off? Just like many on here.

The only reason lizz would be invited onto the speaking circuit would be to send people to sleep.
Word has it that the invites aren’t coming thick and fast.
