Braverman's behaviour in parliament today proves nothing has changed.

Suella Braverman scuttling out of the commons today to avoid scrutiny is a clear indication that nothing has changed with the Tories. The question from Yvette Cooper was tabled in plenty of time so she has no excuses. The fact that she walked out in full view of the speaker doesn't enhance his reputation either.

Maudi Fri 04-Nov-22 21:31:38

Why should she be sacked because the lefty Lib Dems and Labour don't approve of her, well tough I think she is our only hope of stopping the small boats and I pray she succeeds but only time will tell.

HousePlantQueen Fri 04-Nov-22 12:19:13

This monstrous woman must be sacked, the performance yesterday with her arriving in a Chinook at the refugee camp was not just unnecessary, it was disgusting. Can you imagine if you are a child that has spent terrifying months of travel, hunger, deprivation as your parents try to save your life and get you out of Syria or Afghanistan, and then a Chinook in full military colours lands next to where you are queueing up for food? I am not only appalled at her behaviour (no press?), I am appalled at people not calling her out for it. Just who the hell does she think she is?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Nov-22 09:20:32

And why the chinook?

It was all of a piece with her “at war” picture she is trying to paint with her rhetoric of invasion, criminal gangs etc.

This will, and has bred violence.

She should be stopped.

I'm really wondering, for Sunak is perfectly aware of the "Braverman affect: - what he thinks he's doing leaving her there, what's his game? Feed the far right enough rope to hang themselves?

if so, it's a very dangerous game..

I think his game is simple - she agrees to drop out of leadership race in return for a top job. He should have called her bluff once he was in.

They are playing politics with our lives. How dare they.

Oh don't start.

She's no lady and she's not going to stop anything.

And how can anyone know they are illegal if we haven't bothered to find out??
Waiting years to find out and make a decision is way too long.
Unbelievable and unforgivable.

Thank you for the link to Mumsnet. Very interesting.

I really thought that a lesson would be learned from the tragic murder of Jo Cox. All these years later and, sadly, it wasn’t to be.

varian Thu 03-Nov-22 19:15:48

I think the murderer of Jo Cox MP shouted "Britain First"

Yes, you were very clear Luckygirl3, please don't worry about it. 💐

*Something else we should be seriously concerned about is the number of MP's elected by us, the British people, who seem to have no care for this country and its people.*

Indeed we should be worried. We are ruled by a government that has no idea what the word service means - hence the decline in the NHS, transport, care and all the rest. They truly have no concern for the country and its people - all its people.

I hope people realise that my above post was intended to distance myself from the far right of Gransnet, and make clear that this government is failing all of us - native born and immigrant - by not providing proper services - and indeed by deliberately running them down.

Put Britain First sounds as if it goes with a straight-armed salute. But then, anyone who tells the country "We are being invaded and survival depends on getting it stopped." may see that as what we should be doing. The threat is not coming from the asylum seekers but from the far-right who have tried to take over the government.

I see that Sunak has put in Victoria Prentice as Attorney General and this has gone down well with the legal hierarchy. Hopefully this means the dross in his party will now have to obey laws and be told this directly. We may (I live in hope) see an end to Attorney's General willingly lie to allow Tory governments to break the law. It seems VP is respected and expected to carry out the role rather than the politics. Both Patel and Braverman have ignored legal advice that they should use suitable accommodation for asylum seekers undergoing the claims process. We shall have to wait and see if this changes.

In the few days Grant Shapps was Home Secretary apparently, he was trying to sort the accommodation out.

Robert Jenrick, Minister for Education and an ally of Sunak's is, it is said, by-passing Braverman and starting to sort things out ... interesting if true. Perhaps Sunak will manage to isolate her but really, what a way to have to run a government. It seems like an attempt to move towards integrity but not really there because, once again, of the strangle hold of the ERG.

Hmm Gman- that'll be those Victorians who invaded other countries, enslaved people, robbed the riches of the lands they claimed for their Empire....I could go on: those Victorians?

Amazing how many people seem unaware their belief systems are elitist and racist Gman

That's disgusting, Gman. You're being misled.

Gman Wed 02-Nov-22 09:35:27

Voters think like the "Sheep in Animal Farm" four legs good two legs bad. How about 'Put Britain First' Our Victorian forefathers would not have endured the childish playground squabbling that passes for political thinking and action today. We are being invaded and survival depends on getting it stopped.

IrishDancing Tue 01-Nov-22 22:37:30

She’s a disgrace.

Eloethan Tue 01-Nov-22 22:32:30

She is a horrible woman. Her gleeful comments about sending people to Rwanda and her description of people seeking asylum as an "invasion" is, I think, disgraceful. Such a word has warlike connotations and can only encourage mentally unstable or hate-filled people to commit dangerous acts - such as the man who firebombed the refugee centre.

Quote from the late Tony Benn

The way a government treats refugees is very instructive because it shows you how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it

I didn't believe people could be as blind as those in 1930s Germany. It appears they can. Are we always doomed to repeat history?

I’ve been likening this country to the Weimar Republic for several years. It’s frightening.

Iam64 Tue 01-Nov-22 19:32:02

Curtaintwitcher, you couldn’t be more wrong about Braverman.

I agree though that we should be worried by the number of MPs who seem to have no care for this country. I expect though, we would disagree about which mp’s fit your category

Interesting piece in the news earlier.

As I suspected, the number of asylum seekers arriving in Britain today is about half of what it was 20 years ago. They are using a more visible route because other routes are not available to them any more. We are just failing to process the claims in a timely way.

As for Britain being too small, that's a red herring. We're nineteenth in the list of number of asylum seekers accepted per head of population, for Europe. There are many countries physically smaller than us - Netherlands, etc.
