He’s got a lot on his plate right now. He’s definitely doing things differently to Boris. “Focusing on domestic issues”.

I se the King's move as putting pressure on our new PM?

I see also in that report, Greta Thunberg will not be attending but is calling this conference "a scam"

Yes, I saw it too MaizieD.

Don't know how he could do it without looking weak. I heard that they might say the financial stuff has moved on really quickly, so he has time to go to Egypt now. 🤦🏼‍♀️

MaizieD Mon 31-Oct-22 09:17:44

I'm seeing hints on twitter this morning that Sunak is now saying that he might find a spare half hour to pop along to the conference...

Has anyone else heard this?

volver Mon 31-Oct-22 09:15:26

I don't think Charles has any choice about going or not going, I think that now he's King he can only go on official business when approved (informally?) by the PM?

But this daft little soiree at Buckingham Palace is just that - daft. Whoever came up with the idea is trying to create the belief that we are still important in the world and that a meeting of 200 (so far un-named) people is worthwhile. I don't usually use this term, but its "greenwashing".

I wonder what they PM's few words will be? Off you go suckers, take a fan with you cos its going to get hot and we don't care?

Please don’t be unkind as I am asking an
Honest question, after 2 years of working from home for a multinational company
and doing everything on Zoom - why can’t COP27 be done on line ? I know you may say there is a lot of stuff that goes On in small groups , but everything can be done onZoom . My company kept hospitals supplied for medicine and medical products during Covid via zoom and internet

Why COP27 cannot be done online:

There are 30,000 delegates.
The work to be done is often multi-party complex negotiation, which cannot be done on Zoom.
This meeting is the culmination of a year's worth of contributory meetings, probably most of which will have happened online.
Many of plenary sessions and informational sessions are already in Zoom. At least they were for COP26. I watched some.
A lot of the productive work is done spontaneously, not as a result of a fixed agenda.

I worked in a multinational for years, where Teams meetings were the norm for routine work. Creativity and agreements required face to face meetings.

It probably could ruthiek, If they took they whole thing more seriously than their careers it probably would have done.

The King is definitely going to holds a pre-conference meeting!

This is supposed to be a passing on from COP26 to COP27.

Alie2Oxon Sun 30-Oct-22 19:29:28

Yes, it does, which is unfortunate and annoying.

But at least the King is doing something to bring the COP to the fore. It's on the 4th of November. COP27 starts on the 6th.

(By the way, I will be doing what I did last year, which is putting a series of posters up in my front garden. I'm too old to demonstrate, I'm afraid, but I have to do something.)

If he doesn’t go, he risks undermining our country’s position as a world leader on climate and environmental issues. And it sends a very poor signal from our newly appointed PM.

Gundy Sun 30-Oct-22 17:04:33

Whaaaatt?? No one going? King Charles, then, since he’s already a practicing “tree hugger.” By the way - this DOES affect domestic issues too.
Cheers!

COP is NOT about political parties.

It is a global problem which can only be solved by everyone doing their bit. I've pointed this out before and I will say it again if necessary...

You're welcome Susieq62. Has your opinion changed now that you have more information?

Susieq62 Sun 30-Oct-22 15:06:32

Thanks Volver, just wanted to voice my opinion on the subject as well as you did! 👍

Aaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!

I'm going for a cuppa.

Saetana Sun 30-Oct-22 14:53:23

COP is a pointless talking shop - promises are made and hardly any are kept. Sunak is right not to go - he has urgent issues here at home to deal with. We do more than the vast majority of countries to combat climate change but, until countries like China and Indian start to do their part, its a drop in a bucket. Charles most certainly should NOT go - COP is political and he needs to stay out of politics now he is King. The only reason the Queen gave a virtual speech at the last COP is because we were hosting it in the UK. There will be plenty of UK representation there. Oh, and say what you like about Boris, he does genuinely care about the environment.

Why is there one every year when they churn out the same message and very little happens apart from security firms making shed loads of money?
Of course it can be done virtually by most-if not all, countries! A waste of time, resources and breath!! Sorry folks but it is too little too late in my honest opinion !

See previous answers.

Please, just see previous answers... 🤦🏼‍♀️

The un Paris, Conference 12 December 2015 gave us 10 years to stop at 1.5°C as the moment the climate will be in such trouble we won't be able to save the planet. As of 1 November 2022 we have 4 years 10 months

Alie2Oxon Sun 30-Oct-22 13:38:06

Zoom for over 30,000 people? Get real.

What is the point of all these meeting they never solve anything I'm sure they are just jollies for the attendees why can't they just use zoom conferences

Have you read any of the posts on this thread at all katy1950?

Especially the ones that contradict everything you say by using actual facts instead of prejudices?
