The right wing will be back. Lula's victory is temporary however it's a welcome sign of sanity and morality.

I hope the millions that supported Lula will continue with the fight won

Lula's historic victory, unthinkable just two years ago, couldn’t have happened without millions of people fighting for it. As Bolsonaro supporters refuse to accept the results, the mobilisation of those masses will be key to securing democracy.

I agree, Witzend

Or the electricity could go off at a 'convenient' moment...

As an aside, the election process in Brazil is entirely electronic that's why the result is known almost immediately.

Our pencil on a string in a hardboard booth seems archaic by comparison!

To me our system is at least more fraud-proof.
Anything can be hacked into nowadays - electronic voting systems included.

I don't know whether you're misinterpreting anything, but da Silva was imprisoned for corruption for 18 months. However, it looks as though there was corruption going on behind the imprisonment, too.

I don't care, though, he can be as corrupt as he likes as long as he does something to protect the rainforest, IMO.

Reading between the lines it appeared that da Silva's alleged corruption was a handy excuse for Bolsonaro. Am I misinterpreting that?

Had tears in my eyes with relief at hearing the news this morning.

And I don't give a fig about da Silva's corruption - so long as the Amazon rainforest stands a chance, that's all that matters.

It was a very slim margin of victory. Will this be a problem?

Are the Bolsanaro supporters likely to deny that the result is valid?

Unfortunately yes I think.

Less open to fraud and corruption though.

Everything about the UK electoral system is antiquated and ridiculous ^Riverwakk*

What a relief. Too many countries are now led by right wing authoritarian regimes.

Bolsanaro's corruption and total disregard for life has endangered us all. Lula may be far from perfect but he will steer Brazil in a better direction.

I heard on the World Service that the defeated Bolsonaro will do a 'Trump' and claim that he lost to fraud and refuse to leave office. I hope there's no violence.

The result was extremely close - 50.9% to 49.10%.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 31-Oct-22 07:38:51

And save the people who call the rain forest their home.

Jaylou Mon 31-Oct-22 06:37:27

I was completely unaware of this event, but it is good news and will hopefully lead to more good news.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 31-Oct-22 06:13:10

Good.

Save the rain forest.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Mon 31-Oct-22 00:34:25

Great news. I wonder if Brazil will now have a reckoning with itself. It needs one.

MayBee70 Mon 31-Oct-22 00:12:36

Thank goodness. I was terrified that he would lose and that would be the end of the rain forest. It was so close though that I fear there will be trouble. Bolsanaro’s supporters are Trump like.
