321 out of a total of 1,400+

A belt and braces approach is always sensible.

I think, to be fair, given that there are some 600+ MPs alone, it is entirely possible that the rush to hold Irish passports may have come mainly from those who voted Remain. I don't blame them wanting to retain freedom of movement. I wish I'd had a qualifying grandparent or parent.

I am an Irish citizen as I have a parent born in Ireland, I have an Irish passport.

My children cannot apply until they have registered on the foreign births register, this costs a few hundred euro and takes up to 2 years.

I think it was Chris Bryant who raised the subject and he’s not one to get his facts wrong.

I'd trust his information.

If you have a parent or grandparent born in Ireland you can apply for a passport as can your children. After two generations you then have to be born in Ireland to qualify. For example, I was born in Ireland so have automatic citizenship whether I was born in Northern Ireland or the Republic. My children and grandchildren can also apply for one and have a strong chance of getting one. My great grandchildren would need to be born in Ireland to qualify.
I applied for one when we voted to Brexit and got it automatically. If all these MPs have an Irish qualifying relative then they are entitled to apply. I seem to remember Farage got a German passport pdq after the Brexit vote.

DD looked into it as a spouse, but was told she would have to be resident in Ireland for 3 years.

Nothing them or us about it. they are doing exactly what anyone who can lay claim to a grandparent born in ireland has been doing since Brexit. If you cannot stay in the EU one way or another.

I believe the numbers run to nearly 500,000 www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-irish-passports-britain-coveney-b1826580.html.

It includes my sister who has completed the process and I am just starting it.

I’ve looked - no way of proving if this is true or not.

I need a better breakdown of which party MPs have recently got an Irish passport.

One lot of DGC have Irish Passports through their father.

^According to political commentator and former MP Denis MacShane^

Do you have any evidence or factual statistics to back up the claim, please, HousePlantQueen?

It's not that I don't believe you but MacShane was often a stranger to the truth.

Good point. He is a controversial character, but then again, who isn't? I have dug around, and it is an often quoted figure, but one which is hard to verify apparently. Sorry folks

My next task, should I wish to accept it, is to find out who they all are. Any ERG members I wonder?

Yes please!

hmm I wonder if there'll be any complaints that this shows a lack of commitment to the country as was felt by some about Rishi before he gave up his green card.

According to political commentator and former MP Denis MacShane, there has been a large increase in the number of MPs and Members of the Lords who hold an Irish passport. The figures are; 2016 47 Members, 2021 227 Members, 2022 321 Members.
