Football in Qatar

I’m just wondering what everyone thinks about the World Cup being held in Qatar. Today it has been announced that there will be no alcoholic drinks on sale in the grounds by order of the Qatari royal family. No alcohol doesn’t bother me (not that I’m going to the World Cup anyway) but surely if a country agrees to host this competition it should be able to fulfill the usual requirements. However some people have suggested that others should respect their culture. Well I certainly don’t respect the culture that uses capital punishment, makes being gay illegal, and has few rights for women.
And don’t get me started on David Beckham endorsing this country.
So what do you think?

Urmstongran Fri 18-Nov-22 17:40:40

Wrong footed them completely at huge cost.

Urmstongran Fri 18-Nov-22 17:50:49

Meanwhile next door to Qatar...

Typically, it is Saudi Arabia that makes headlines for its yearly mass executions. For example, in March of this year the kingdom executed 81 men in a single day, which is a record in the modern political history of the country.

Kuwait, this week put seven people to death, including women, state-run KUNA news agency confirmed Wednesday.

Mediaeval justice.

Absolutely disgraceful decision by FIFA to hold it in Qatar. No UK teams should take part and the UK government should not send the Foreign Secretary to attend.

Yes. And I was told today beckham gets 150 million, not 10 million.

There was a short documentary uploaded to YouTube on the thousands of migrant workers killed and injured over the years while the stadia were being built. There is an appalling lack of transparency from the authorities and the families of those who have died have been denied compensation - told that their loved ones have died from ‘natural’ causes. Should never have been awarded in the first place.

Urmstongran Fri 18-Nov-22 19:07:09

Of the FIFA executive committee members who voted in 2010 for Qatar to stage the tournament, the majority have since been accused, banned or indicted over allegations of corruption.

Rosie51 Fri 18-Nov-22 19:38:46

If Joe Lycett shreds £10,000 then he's just showing what a complete idiot he is. How can doing that help anyone? Only someone with more money than sense or compassion would even think of doing it. Talk about out of touch with the hardships so many are facing.....and incidentally Joe it's not illegal to destroy banknotes so no you won't be committing a crime.
I wish none of the England team, commentators etc were going, but they're free agents and I'm free to despise their actions.

Smileless2012 Fri 18-Nov-22 19:58:38

and I'm free to despise their actions yes, and despise them I do. Well said Rosie.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 18-Nov-22 20:30:20

Unfortunately not only does money talk or makes the world go round.

MayBee70 Sat 19-Nov-22 15:51:13

At least it’s highlighting the way that these countries treat people and opening up a discussion about it I suppose. Joe is really upset/worried about what he threatened to do. He is, imo, a thoroughly decent person. He won’t destroy that money because because he knows it would be wrong to do so. But maybe it will make Beckham give some of his money to charity. It is difficult for him, though, as he is one of our main representatives on the world football stage. But why oh why did anyone ever think that it was ok to hold the World Cup there? It’s wrong on every level.

that will be the powers that be who got their palms well and truly greased. There is absolutely no other explanation for moving it to a country with a climate totally unsuitable for the tournament even in their winter, and that's without the human rights aspects.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 19-Nov-22 18:05:19

Top to toe corruption. It has been obvious from just before the vote to stage it in Qatar.

I can’t be doing with it.

MayBee70 Sat 19-Nov-22 18:51:28

And they lied about so many things eg being able to hold it in the summer and have air conditioned stadiums. And allowing beer to be sold in them.

MerylStreep Sat 19-Nov-22 19:04:09

All this lying isn’t going to go down too well with their spiritual leader, is it 😉

VioletSky Sat 19-Nov-22 19:06:01

I don't like it no and I don't like a lot of countries being allowed into sporting events or being traded with.

But what worries me, is what would happen, should countries find themselves ostracised completely, to their people and would it be worse?

Can we influence them in a more positive direction with friendly terms?

The way women are treated in some parts of the world is horrific. Sanctions should be imposed where women are still fighting for rights but we can't have Sanctions without friendly terms.

I don't know, I just don't know how we ever fix this

maddyone Sat 19-Nov-22 19:09:39

Oh Lucca thanks for confirmation of the 150 million. I heard that was the amount and then heard 10 million, so thought the lower figure must be right because quite frankly, 150 million is an obscene amount of money. David Beckham must be devoid of even an ounce of humility. How can he accept that amount of money from such a corrupt regime?

maddyone Sat 19-Nov-22 19:12:33

VioletSky we have to accept that we can’t fix everything. It’s not in our power to fix it. Look what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan when we interfered. But we don’t have to award these countries all the prestige of world class tournaments.

VioletSky Sat 19-Nov-22 20:46:41

I know, I sometimes think of I could press a button to make abusive people disappear I would even of that meant I'd disappear with them

I so hoped you were right but it seems he did. I've lost all respect for him, there are so many people in need and he could have used that money to help them. What a waste!

Kate1949 Sun 20-Nov-22 17:07:19

I think they can get alcohol if they pay a few thousand pounds for a corporate area/box.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 20-Nov-22 18:31:31

Everyone who has bought a ticket for this event are complicit in the human rights abuses of this corrupt state. Wouldn't it have been great if very few tickets were sold? Urmstongran- the leaders of many of these countries achieve the unbelievable, making Henry the Eigth and other medieval monarchs look positively liberal.

maddyone Sun 20-Nov-22 18:33:55

You’re absolutely right Chocolatelovingran.

This world Cup is proof that money talks. I hope that Budweiser sue the Qatar officials for millions, it is beyond hypocrisy to accept sponsorship from a brewer and then not allow sales of their product. I forecast the tournament being a failure despite or maybe because of all the money thrown at it. As a PP said, there is little public interest as far as I can see, no flags on cars or sales of the usual supporter tat.

It’s not a failure, nearly 3 million tickets have been sold, and there’s worldwide coverage. It’s the biggest football tournament in the world, and regardless of all the politics around it, the fans will still watch - it’s not their fault that terrible political decisions have been made, the football will still be important to them.
