Meghan Markle Faced 'Disgusting and Very Real' Threats in the U.K., Former Counterterrorism Head Says

So possibly NOT figments of fevered imaginations.

In a new interview with Channel 4 News, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police said that there were genuine threats to the Duchess of Sussex's life while she lived in the U.K.

Neil Basu opened up about the alarming allegations amid his resignation as Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations for the Met Police in an interview released Tuesday. Basu, 54, is leaving the force after 30 years, during which he earned the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service and served as the senior-most officer for the counterterrorism unit of the Met Police starting in March 2018 — two months before Meghan and Prince Harry's royal wedding.

"You were in charge of royal protection. How would you characterize the threats that Meghan and Harry received?" journalist Cathy Newman asked in a quick clip shared on Twitter.

"Well, disgusting and very real," Basu replied, calling extreme right-wing terrorism the "fast-growing threat" to the country.

I do sincerely wonder if maybe it would help if she in turn didn't seem to be continually taking potshots at the RF.

Let's put things in context. Was he asked whether other members of the Royal family had ever had threats or disgusting e mails sent sent? No. So are we to believe it is only Meghan Markle ? Obviously being economical with the truth. The Royal family have been targeted ( Queen and Princess Anne shot at for starters ) as have so called celebrities but is MM someone extra special? No

^Still if you’re wired to see racism everywhere that’s what you’ll see.^
Just the sort of thing somebody so dismissive of racism would say.

Exactly. I don't see racism in everything. But I DO see it and call it for what it is.

Sticking our heads in the sand, making excuses or even saying that it is normal in the RF and to be expected no longer cuts it.

Yup. Lovely, victim, mistreated 'pale skinned' lady. Conspiring, vicious, plotting, evil 'dark' woman.

Almost as if they have a bit of a pattern.

Definitely some mental gymnastics in that post. Still if you’re wired to see racism everywhere that’s what you’ll see.

What a waste of your long indignant post Dickens when you have completely misunderstood things! 😄
My post saying get a grip had nothing to do with MM and any hate mail or threats towards her, or anyone else either.
It was entirely aimed at about 6 posters who have been carrying on a ridiculous pile on towards Joseanne on this thread because of one thing she said which they didn’t like.
Next time maybe read the whole thread before wading in.

My "long indignant post" is about two sentences longer than the one you've just posted!

... and your For gods sake get a grip posters! - well, I also commented on one of Joseanne's comments.

Next time maybe read the whole thread before wading in. Hmm, maybe I'll continue to take a comment at face-value - or read the whole thread if I think it necessary.

BTW, this post - indignant though it is - might appear longer than it really is because I've spaced it with paragraphs grin.

I never screamed anything. I don't scream. I don't need to.

That conversation was racist. And blaming what she is wearing? Really?

Are you seriously suggesting that Meghan planted someone in the palace that would trap someone in the royal circle in order to overshadow the Boston trip?

Mad innit?!

I am literally gobsmacked by the mental gymnastics I see on GN and MN in regards to H&M.

^As the 83 year old repeated the same question over and over, the lady probably remembers it word for word. Her heritage is nothing to do with anybody else, she was there in her capacity as her role to do with abused women. To keep on about her heritage when told she was British was at the very least crass and at worst racist. I don't know that I would class it as abusive though. To be honest, tickingbird you are sounding a bit like a conspiracy theorist with your comments.^

Ms Fulani makes much of her heritage and her particular refuge is for abused women of colour. Why is she proud of it one moment and feels violated when asked about it the next? Why? Because she has an agenda and is an activist.

I’m no conspiracy theorist, just someone who recognises BS when I sees it. I can also think for myself and haven’t been brainwashed. There is definitely something ‘off’ about this little tale.

Oh yes, plenty of BS about.

A few years ago I received online death threats for accidentally revealing a plot outcome/spoiler on a well known tv series! I appologised but there were a lot of "you should die for that" and lots of other similar crazy comments.
I've had an oven ready on my shoulder ever since.
Oh wait, In reality I let it bother me for a while, then I Got On With My Life.

And as someone said upthread, Princess Anne went through an Actual horrendous, frightening incident but hasn't let it define her. And the Queen also had her fair share of threats in her time but didn't bleat on about it.
I suppose some characters are Stoics and others are the type to cry into their cornflakes over every little, often imagined, mishap.
H &M just love to portray themselves as Victims.
The public are starting to see through it though, so they need to be careful not to overdo things.

icanhandthemback Thu 01-Dec-22 20:46:55

Well said, Dickens.

As for the racism it’s strange how the woman in question has perfect recall - word for word. I don’t find it odd that someone dressed in African looking clothes with dreadlocks would be asked about their heritage, especially by an 83 yr old.

Joseanne made one comment that MM admirers dislike and cue ridiculous pearl clutching posts about it.

For heaven's sake, there have been two politicians murdered in this country, and others attacked and threatened. Other high-profile figures have been threatened with violence, rape, and more death threats.

There are groups of people who form little armies of hate against those who offend their sensibilities, and it's something that's becoming an increasing problem. MM is one of their targets - there are others.

It doesn't matter who the person who is being threatened is, it is an appalling state of affairs that there are platforms for such people to spew and spread their hatred. They are undermining the fabric of a civilised society.

... but we're all pearl-clutching MM admirers? Right?

But if a comment comes out wrong

And a genuine explanation with an apology isn't accepted
