Meghan Markle Faced 'Disgusting and Very Real' Threats in the U.K., Former Counterterrorism Head Says

So possibly NOT figments of fevered imaginations.

In a new interview with Channel 4 News, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police said that there were genuine threats to the Duchess of Sussex's life while she lived in the U.K.

Neil Basu opened up about the alarming allegations amid his resignation as Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations for the Met Police in an interview released Tuesday. Basu, 54, is leaving the force after 30 years, during which he earned the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service and served as the senior-most officer for the counterterrorism unit of the Met Police starting in March 2018 — two months before Meghan and Prince Harry's royal wedding.

"You were in charge of royal protection. How would you characterize the threats that Meghan and Harry received?" journalist Cathy Newman asked in a quick clip shared on Twitter.

"Well, disgusting and very real," Basu replied, calling extreme right-wing terrorism the "fast-growing threat" to the country.

One minute of a 10.5 minute interview talking about the threats to M in the context of far-right extremists.

600 terrorists stopped during his watch.

Expressions of how badly he felt at the time of the murder of Sarah Everard and how he felt shame.

I don't think its him that's got the agenda, is it?

So well put. 👏

Mamie

You could try watching the lengthy Channel 4 interview and hear what he actually said allsortsofbags.
I dunno but it might make for a more informed point of view maybe? 😂
Apologies if you have watched it already.

Indeed Mamie it’s always better to get it from the horses mouth than to speculate from reports of what was said.
It is misleading to say that 30 years and ……..all he had to say was that M&H had threats made against them or he was focussing on M&H.
I can understand why he may be unpopular in some quarters, because he is mixed race, outspoken about racism, and is no fan of the present government.
Good for him I say, but I do unashamedly have “an agenda”.

allsortsofbags What did Basu say that you disagree with?

BTW He didn't focus on Meghan. He was asked a question and answered it.

It is difficult for those of us in the U.K. to understand quite how safe our country is

There is always some level of threat everywhere.

It must be nerve wracking to live your life with that definite threat at the back of your mind all the time.
And to keep smiling.

Ah, I couldn't be bothered to research him and I should have but ...

30 years in the and around the "job" and all he has to say is M&H had threats made against them.

No-one should have to live with the awfulness, not M&H, no-one but lots of people do.

30 years in and around the 'job" he knew about London Bridge, Manchester and plenty of others threats even if it wasn't on his watch, those are the incidents that brace the security forces up, but he focused on M&H.

Surprise, surprise, he has an agenda. He's entitled to have an agenda, lots of people have one.

Focusing on M&H certainly got him media coverage.

Objective archived. He got to air his grievances.

His grievance are very probably well founded.

How many of us wish we could bring grievances for past bias and inequalities? Plenty of us would be my guess.

Are threats awful and real, yes. Are there inequalities yes and clear bias yes.

Is it right that these things are addressed and changes brought about, Yes.

I suppose I'm just cynical about the victim card being over played.

Putting on tin hat and retreating behind the sofa.

It is also worth noting that the M and H bit was a very small part of it and a shame that is the bit that got all the headlines.
I can imagine that he is the kind of person who would have spoken truth to power. Can't think that would have gone down well with recent governments.

If he has a hidden and bitter agenda then posters are right to disparage him.
The point is that it’s old news but he is dishing it up to suit himself by the sounds of it.

And if he doesn't have a hidden and bitter agenda but some people can't help themselves thinking that anybody who doesn't immediately savage M&H must have one.

OK to disparage him then?

The interview was broadcast because he has just retired. It was lengthy and as I said upthread, he was measured and extremely impressive.
But it does help to watch it and hear what he actually said in context.
Should be on Channel 4 catch-up surely?

Thanks Mamie. That would help. But as I am abroad I might catch up another time if I can be bothered. Though no doubt we will be on to the next instalment before I get back.

Oops sorry x4 actually plus GagoJo.
Obviously minds who think alike!

Joseanne Wed 30-Nov-22 14:11:10

Just to clarify my comment "she is history" which drew raised eyebrows x 3 (Volver, Lucca, Blossoming). I meant it as a slang expression implying that Meghan no longer has any importance in my present life, her royal career is over, and I have no inclination to discuss further.
Just like someone might say their ex is history, although not dead.

Interesting that this is being highlighted just as the Prince and Princess of Wales are on a three day tour of the US. 🤔

Neil Basu was Head of counter-terrorism policing between 2018-21, but was passed over for the position of Metropolitan Police Commissioner and head of the National Crime Agency. He claimed to have been blocked because he had been outspoken on issues of race and diversity.

So he has an agenda then.

Unlike those who are disparaging him?

Oreo Wed 30-Nov-22 13:36:40

Nobody should be subjected to threats of any kind in an ideal world. It’s not an ideal world though.
The main thing is, in the case of threats to H and M the threats were defused and in a few cases prosecuted.

I like facts rather than speculation, what can I say?

The policeman lived along the road from my friend, near my hometown. We didn't have google in 1974.

I think Megan and Harry wanted to stay out of the public eye.

I think that’s the opposite of what they wanted, unless you’re joking.

It is an ok casual expression unless a poster wants to show off what they have just googled, as Volver does.😂

Mark Phillips.

I believed this was happening all along but maybe now some will gain some perspective.

If any member of my family were subject to this and I had the money to protect them, I would. Especially where minors are involved.

So it makes for an uncomfortable truth about how much support they were really given and why they spoke out
