BBC News - Buckingham Palace aide resigns over remarks to black charity boss

Well at least the Palace took this incident seriously and didn't fob off Ms Fulani's complaint.

No matter how often people say it wasn't racist, it was.

That's not an opinion, it's the facts.

Sorry. Welcome to the 2020s.

I can't decide if you are arrogant or ignorant. You feel you can call people racist on facts that you make up. There are laws about racism. They are the only things that make an act racist. What was it, in this case, that meant anyone broke the law?

You are allowed an opinion however outlandish. You are not allowed your own facts.

A fact is a datum about one or more aspects of a circumstance, which, if accepted as true and proven true, allows a logical conclusion to be reached on a true–false evaluation. Tell me how that applies to this situation, and I will agree it is a fact. Otherwise, I revert to the first line of this post.

So she did it then?

So all the people blaming Fulani can get off their bandwagons?

(Some hope, I know.)

You really are reveling in this aren't you volver. SH was brought up to be well mannered. What is your problem with her saying she is sorry she inadvertently caused offence? I could say it to you if you felt offended. I would be sorry you had felt offended, but I would still think you are a stirrer.

I believe in equality. I would almost go so far as to say it is in the centre of my beliefs. I am really not sure that some people, people like you, do.

Since when did everyone have to stand back and think - ah well, this stranger's history may mean that my normal behaviour, not intended to upset anyone, is not appropriate because they see themselves as in some way different?

That is not equality. That is people asking for extra special behaviour from everyone else, just for them. And it is behaviour where the goalposts are constantly shifted.

If you chose to take offence over other people's way of being that is your problem. If you do it because they are not the same colour as you, that is racist. If you do it because you lack knowledge that is ignorance. If I deliberately offend you then it is my problem. If I do it because of your colour that is racist. If I do it because it is my normal behaviour, then I may be bad mannered, or you may be oversensitive.

There was no racism in the case we are discussing.

My worry is that this will really backfire. I am beginning to feel there is racism on this forum - but from the accusers, not the accused.

So if I hear someone with an American accent and ask where they are from is that also racist?

Are you serious?

I'll play along.

No, Chestnut, of course not.

Chestnut Sat 03-Dec-22 09:58:14

Oh sorry, I guess it would depend if they were black or white wouldn't it?

You experience shows very well how a white woman was asked and her answer accepted, while a black woman was asked and her answer not accepted. That is the racist part of this incident.
It's not racist to have an interest in people and where they originate. One's heritage is something most people would be proud of. However, with the noisy surroundings it may have proved a difficult conversation which did not engage properly. Shouting questions in a crowded room is never going to come across very well, so probably best to let other people talk. Just smile and nod back, then you can't be accused of anything.

Calendargirl Sat 03-Dec-22 09:43:38

Someone asked earlier why it was William who commented on this incident, why not Camilla?

1. Lady S is William’s godmother, so it concerned him as well.

2. The Palace responded promptly, which would be a representation of Camilla’s views, I assume.

3. Personally, I think it’s not much use wearing a name badge if it can’t be seen, that’s the whole point of it. Not excusing the hair moving though. Lady S should have said “And your name is? I can’t see your badge, it’s being hidden by your lovely hair”.

4.If Lady S has hearing problems, not surprising at 83, she shouldn’t be in a meet and greet type role. My DH has this type of hearing loss, big gatherings are awkward for him. (Not that he attends this type of function, of course)

Any chance that those shouting racism will get off their bandwagon? Some hope!
Lady Hussey offered to apologise as she was no doubt horrified by the instant news coverage and the thought that she had upset a guest at the event. The meeting and the apology was turned down by Mrs Fulani.
If Mrs F had been proud of her roots as claimed then she would have been happy to say her parents were from Barbados.Maybe she would have preferred people to think they came from somewhere in Africa? Which all did originally of course, but the fact is her parents were born in Barbados as I expect her grandparents were as well.
She had an agenda I think, which was to try and prove that those in and around the RF were racist. This incident proves nothing except her own prejudices and that those around the RF need training for the future in how to handle awkward question and answer chit chat.

Speculation and supposition.

I'd say that those around the RF need training in how not to behave in a racist manner. And maybe training in what unconscious bias is.

How to avoid initiating racist chit-chat might be a good place to start.

Of course you would volver
Perhaps you have a few unconscious biases of your own, a lot of people do, and not about race either.

The other day I said GN was a bit like Malory Towers. Some days it's not quite that grown up.

How true. It’s what civilised people do to keep the peace.

I own a leopard print dress and look rather fetching in it. It was from Whistles.

Maybe read and glean some more eh?!

So when she asked a man of Pakistani origin where he was from he answered “Manchester currently” and she accepted that answer. He was dressed in a suit and tie. When she was speaking to a woman with an assumed African name and egregiously African clothing she was obviously curious as to the woman’s background. Why just because someone’s black is that racist? The woman dresses like that because she’s making a point. She even states the tribe she’s from in her bio. How does she know as according to what she allegedly said to SH “Lady, they didn’t keep records”.

It’s obviously painful for all the race baiting virtue signallers but those without blinkers on can see the woman has an agenda against the RF rather like the Duchess of Montecito.

So, what I glean from that is that if you are a man in a suit, you don't have to worry, but if you are a woman in a leopard print dress with unusual accessories you should expect to be quizzed?

Haven't seen that one. That's new.

So she wants to apologise for something so many people say she hasn't done? How does that work then?

In civilised society, in order to be kind, people do say sorry if they think they've hurt someone's feelings, even if recollections may vary.

She hasn't "kept silent" volver, she has asked to meet Ms Fulani to apologise.

Just to throw something new into the mix. It transpires that Lady H may be hard of hearing. If so then any kind of conversation in a noisy crowded room would have been difficult. The frequency of the human voice is one that cannot be clearly heard above lots of background noise. With so many people close together and shouting at each other maybe both women were struggling to hear clearly.

She's 83.

She could have dementia.

She was trying to make conversation.

She was confused by the leopard print.

Now, she might be deaf.

Any more excuses to dredge up?

Lady Susan has kept silent since the event. It's all the apologists who need to examine their motives.

Aveline Sat 03-Dec-22 07:10:23

Not accepted? Not heard? Not asked in the way it was reported? So many questions. Only one side answering. Racism is not the only answer.
