i'm not sure on mixed race as a term. think it's ok.
i cannot imagine ever having to use such a term; why, in what context would anyone need to ?
but it's clear when terms are offensive.
i don't think changes are so much about language and sensibilities, but more to do with power.
people will no longer tolerate being insulted.

I was told off by my boss once in the cafe of the adult education centre I was working at, for offering a student ‘black or white coffee’ instead of with out without milk. Totally barmy in my opinion.

I had many students over the years of a variety of colours and nationalities, I never had any problem with them or them with me.

Did you see similar ethnic clothes on your High Street GG13?

Language does evolve. I was corrected 12 years ago after describing a 13 year old as mixed race. I was told to use dual heritage. I did though her heritage was more mixed than dual - white c=British/Irish/Scottish/North African/Indian and more.

Language matters. No One would use cretin or lunatic these days though these terms were used in our lifetime.

This ex Head was in meetings with other professionals from across the education system. She told me that’s just how it was then. Nobody challenged it during discussions.

I lived in Hackney for 7 years my next door was Hackney Town Hall, I went to Primary School there, passed my 11+ started my senior education at the Grammar School, have school friends that still live there.

that term was never acceptable to dual heritage people or to people of colour generally.
and those so called professionals would have found that out in the 1960s if they had bothered to ask the people whom they were denigrating by describing them as items from a foundry.

it is quite unremarkable in hackney, where Ngozi said sistah space was based.

A lady at my book club is in her mid 70’s. She used to be a Head Teacher. Or Headmistress as it was back in the day. During the course of discussion about topics around race (the book) she said that children were termed ‘half-caste’ and back then it was a perfectly accepted term around the meeting table amongst staff. Now of course it’s ‘mixed-race’ that’s the acceptable term (unless it’s changed again?) and we do have to moderate speech to keep up. What was allowed amongst professionals is no longer the case. The wheel turns and the language with it. I just think some old people don’t keep up.

Probably as well she’s stepped down though (or been pushed to). At 83y she was tactless. My 90y old stepfather says “that coloured chap down the road”. Not “the guy with the red car at 28”. He actually thinks ‘coloured’ is a polite term. It was in the day because other less nice words were used in the 60’s. . We gently try to remind him it’s not PC now .. to no avail.

One would think, Urm, that they would be very well versed in what is and isn't acceptable to discuss. There must be a list of do not discuss topics.

Nice, easy openers. Uncontroversial. No one for example, would go up to a gender neutral (to introduce yet another GN hot topic) and say, 'So what gender are you?'.

A 5 year old might. But not a very experienced, well trained individual.

I get that, totally GagaJo and yet I think the setting here adds substance because this lady wanted to stand out and be noticed and different because she was wearing an outfit that reflected her ethnicity. It wasn’t as though she was in jeans and tee-shirt or a dress from FatFace. She was promoting herself in a completely unusual attire. Good for her, no problem with that at all but don’t be surprised lady if your unusual attire, not something seen on the High Street, arouses curiosity.

She can’t have it both ways. Lady Hussey was insensitive by persisting but she probably wanted to get to the bottom of the origins of the costume. Tactless, sure. Racist? No way.

How do you know what she wanted? Fact - you don't!
