I taught my children to ignore the green man until they had checked that no cars were coming.

Drivers sometimes go through red lights

Oh yes, double check, but crossing on the green man has to be safer most of the time, than chancing it on the red man. Children's perception of how far away a car is, and the speed it's travelling at are acknowledged as poor. My point was it's not a good idea to teach children that crossing against the red man is acceptable or safe. Sometimes you wonder why you bother.

That’s brilliant DD. It would hold their attention more than a poster. Add some catchy lyrics about swimming unsupervised in deep or open water and walking on icy ponds and it would cover just about anything.
I could make a whole set of lessons using that song.

If you google 'Dumb Ways To Die lesson plan' you'll find some ready made ones. I haven't opened any, and some are for ESL, but they may be able to be adapted. As you say though, you could make your own pretty easily. The concept was designed for just that purpose.

Totally agree Kate1949 Completely different, but today I was waiting at a traffic light controlled crossing. There was a woman with two small children standing next to me. There wasn't a car coming but the 'man' was still at red so I stayed where I was, but she said to her children "come on, be quick" and proceeded to cross. On my own, and with no children nearby, I'd have done the same, but surely teaching children you can cross when the 'man' is red is foolish. It was only a few seconds until he turned green. My children used to love watching and trying to be first to shout 'he's green!'

Adults need to set an example. My sister was walking in the park today, not too far from where this tragedy happened. There was a man walking his dog across the frozen lake/pond.

I think they should be brought back, but they need to be more imaginative than the terrifying ones we used to be shown. The stranger danger ones were nightmare inducing, and some of the accident prevention ones were as bad.

This one was a great success in Australia. It appeals to all ages and is both amusing and catchy, but has a strong message. I think it went on to become a video game as well, which would reinforce the message further.

So do I, but until there’s an accident like this, you’d hear cries of “Nanny State.”

I spent part of yesterday with Y1&Y2 making posters showing how ice is dangerous if you fall on it or especially through it
They seemed clued up about the dangers, with some good slogans like e.g. Your slide might break my leg, or Slipping isn’t funny, but then spent playtime trying to make slides on the icy field since the playgrounds had been coned off.

Agree - the only public information shown these days seems to be about driving on smart motorways - the Go Left campaign.

The film made by Welsh students in 2009 about the dangers of using a mobile while driving should be broadcast more... it's tragic and very hard-hitting, but it gets the message across.

Unbearably sad.

Truth is, Milly, that no government can save everyone from all potential accidents. I saw a post yesterday criticising a local authority because a pond was frozen over and the writer said the pond should have been fenced off at once 'by the council'. How can they fence off all frozen areas of water? Cars skid, mount the pavement and kill people - do we demand crash barriers along the kerb of every pavement? I would like to think that schools and parents impress on children the dangers in the world, but sadly they will still happen. This tragedy is beyond words.

I could not get the newspaper image out of my mind of the ten year old boy who tried to save the children in the water, and died himself. What a courageous, wonderful child, and what a man he might have grown into. It is beyond words.

I had it drummed into me as a child never to go on a frozen pond, but I did it anyway and fell through, luckily only up to my waist. I still remember the long walk home! I never did it again. Beyond sad for the families.
