The Gender Recognition Reform Bill is to be debated today from around 2.30pm, which can be watched online here :

www.scottishparliament.tv/meeting/meeting-of-the-parliament-december-20-2022

An amendment, to prevent convicted sex offenders from getting a GRC, has already been turned down.
I find it absolutely appalling that MSPs prioritise the 'rights' of sex offenders over those of female people who have to give evidence about them or have to be locked in prison with them.

There is to be another amendment, seeking to prevent someone awaiting trial for a sex offence from gaining a GRC before the trial.
If that passes, it means that some women may be saved from having to call their attacker a woman, and 'she, during testimony but other women won't, if the attacker already has a GRC.

Here is further comment on the Bill, which is 99% certain to pass - going by responses from MSPs to constituents.

Well, the silly buggers have won the day in the Scottish Parliament, just hope that the UK government can do their best to stop it becoming law.
Plenty of angry people outside the building who opposed it tho, which is good. That means less votes for the SNP from many women.

Fewer.

Jumpers some think it means woollen (usually) garments worn for warmth, others think it's a term used for poor souls who are threatening suicide from a bridge or other structure because they're in a very dark place, one has a different definition even when using it in a bridge closure situation, but refuses to elaborate. Then there's always someone who thinks to correct people on the correct usage of less or fewer .......... oh dear.

Jeezy peeps.

You know how to hold a grudge, I'll give you that Rosie51.

Not a grudge, just holding to account somebody who wouldn't admit to an error of judgement/post who is happy to hold others to account. Honesty counts for a great deal.

Did she get her taxi home?

Exposing herself in public. Well, her merkin anyway. Perfectly normal, rational behaviour, when schoolchildren are present.

Doodledog I totally agree with your last post. At least VioletSky and Glorianny always stick with their convictions. And do you know, I’m very surprised neither of them have contributed to this thread (maybe they have and I’ve missed it/them).

grannydarkhair Fri 23-Dec-22 00:03:56

Well, I guess @GussieGrips (Elaine Miller) certainly didn’t hold back on how she felt ❤️

NS would have sold her granny to the devil to retain power and to get another referendum on Scottish Independence. She doesn't care one jot for other women because she doesn't see herself ever needing a refuge, or being imprisoned, or not being afforded a level of security or privacy if she needs in-patient hospital care. At last a degree of honesty is being displayed in many situations. The "on the fence" have finally admitted they were never in danger of getting splinters 🤣🤣🤣

volver Fri 23-Dec-22 00:03:24

I don't expect women to wheest. Just don't expect everybody to agree with you.

That just about sums up your contributions on the subject, volver.

Snide, unnecessary comments about writing style, nitpicking about grammar or the parliamentary process, but nothing about the issues.

Now you are off the fence you say you were on, can you please enlighten me about how this is going to work? What is meant by 'living as a woman'? And who will judge whether the 'womanly' standard has been achieved? Will it be as regressive as many women fear, or have the parameters of what it means to 'live as a woman' been redrawn? Oh, and what about actual women who don't live up to them? Will there be consequences?

grannydarkhair Fri 23-Dec-22 00:00:12

Volver I really don’t give a fig what you think about my grasp of Scottish politics or anything else. I truly don’t understand how anyone could vote for this Bill as it stood, especially when the amendments were all also voted down. The Bill may have been passed but #WomenWontWheest.

Galaxy Thu 22-Dec-22 23:58:42

I found your post deeply patronising. I will dare to say that I am afraid. And you know absolutely nothing about me too. Yes I have dealt with dealers too, luckily on one occasion the door held in time for the police to arrive, am not sure what that proves.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Thu 22-Dec-22 23:51:21

Galaxy you don't know who I am, you don't know what I do, you don't know what I know, you don't know who I work for. I'm not about to tell you, you'll have to take my word for it that I've been fighting the corner of the abused and vulnerable for years.

I've sat with very disturbed and difficult young people who had to be given all the protection we could to protect them from their pimps, their dealers and their abusive parents. Sometimes those were all the same person. They'll use far worse than a numbered paper certificate and a frock to get to their victims.

I've seen much more than anybody ought to in a lifetime and if I hadn't grown a thick skin I doubt I'd have survived. So don't you dare call me patronising.

Oreo If you look at the list of SMPs in my last post, you’ll see that the SNP, Scottish Labour and Scottish Tories all had MSPs voting for and against. The Scottish Green MSPs were the only ones who voted unanimously for the Bill.
Now they’ve helped to get the Bill passed, maybe the Scottish Greens might return to being a party who campaigns on environmental issues. But they’ve lost my vote, almost certainly for ever.

If anyone's thinking that the Green Party voted for this just to help the SNP out, you might want to reconsider your grasp of Scottish politics.

grannydarkhair Thu 22-Dec-22 23:45:43

A correction to my previous post, all four of the Scottish LD MSPs voted for the Bill.

volver Thu 22-Dec-22 23:42:53

Firstly. The Scottish Parliament has "pushed it through" by a majority of MSPs voting for it. We call that democracy up here, what do you call it? Trying to block it will be interesting. Not democracy, certainly.

Secondly. If the majority of English MPs don't vote for it, fair enough. Be sure to remind them of how many other countries are taking this step towards equality, and how this is another way that England will be left behind the rest of the world.

But, England's choice, to be sure. Wonder how the Welsh feel about it.

Oh but it has!
Want to make sure it doesn’t happen here and for the LP and Keir Starmer to take this matter seriously and listen to women.
Also to block if possible what the Scottish parliament have just pushed through.

volver Thu 22-Dec-22 23:25:57

They're not MPs. (Well, except the one with three jobs.)

Write to your Labour MP if you want. It's got sweet Fanny Adams to do with MPs.

Oreo Thu 22-Dec-22 23:19:06

Hasn’t it come to something when Conservative MP’s are the only ones to stand up for women in the UK!
Doesn’t matter why they do, it’s enough that they do.
Am writing to my Labour MP about this, and hope others will do, the LP has to realise that women make up a big part of the voting public.

volver Thu 22-Dec-22 23:18:13

FarNorth Thu 22-Dec-22 23:14:44

It does Oreo but those who supported independence still do so, just not the SNP.

I don't think anyone who has prioritised party loyalty over genuine concerns will say anything now. Why would they?
Their parties will now be full of people who support this, because they always did, and a much greater number of people who support it because they were told it's transphobic not to.
