The Gender Recognition Reform Bill is to be debated today from around 2.30pm, which can be watched online here :

An amendment, to prevent convicted sex offenders from getting a GRC, has already been turned down.
I find it absolutely appalling that MSPs prioritise the 'rights' of sex offenders over those of female people who have to give evidence about them or have to be locked in prison with them.

There is to be another amendment, seeking to prevent someone awaiting trial for a sex offence from gaining a GRC before the trial.
If that passes, it means that some women may be saved from having to call their attacker a woman, and 'she, during testimony but other women won't, if the attacker already has a GRC.

Here is further comment on the Bill, which is 99% certain to pass - going by responses from MSPs to constituents.

How can anyone reasonable vote against those amendments?
No sense or logic in it at all.

Smileless2012 Tue 20-Dec-22 13:54:47

As the amendment to prevent a convicted sex offender obtaining a GRC has already been turned down, I can't say I'm hopeful that the one to prevent someone waiting to go to trial for a sex offence from obtaining one, will be successful either FarNorth.

IMO sense and logic are in very short supply throughout this GRR Bill Oreoangry.

Russell Findlay, Conservative MSP, has said :
"I’m trying to stop sex offenders from being able to exploit Nicola Sturgeon’s self-ID bill.

Now, at the 11th hour, an SNP minister is trying to block these and other vital amendments."

The SNP Minister asked Findlay not to proceed with his proposed amendments.
Can it really get any more ridiculous?

From Mumsnet.

If I was living in Scotalnd I'd be leaving asap.

Scotland

The women in the viewing gallery were told they’d be arrested if they didn’t leave. I think they were allowed back in later. How anyone could vote against these amendments is beyond me. Imagine believing that known sex offenders won’t abuse the system, how naive or just plain stupid can you be?

FarNorth Tue 20-Dec-22 21:13:37

I guess they don't care if the system is abused, and girls & women put at risk, as long as we get the Bill shoved through before Xmas. angry

grannydarkhair Tue 20-Dec-22 21:19:05

Tbh, the number who voted for the amendments has surprised and encouraged me a tiny wee bit, I thought it would be far fewer.

Middle class self indulgence at its finest.

Allsorts Tue 20-Dec-22 21:32:47

Just whose are the people who want this bill overturned. No right minded person thinks it's normal.,Scotand has lost the plot.

Urmstongran Tue 20-Dec-22 21:40:46

Seems the SNP isn't intent on stopping at cutting off its nose to spite its face, it's going for full decapitation.

FarNorth Tue 20-Dec-22 21:55:15

gdh I really thought they'd accept that sex offenders should be excluded from self-id.
There were some very good speeches on it.
The details on who exactly voted it down will be on ScotParl website tomorrow.

grannydarkhair Wed 21-Dec-22 00:09:58

Allsorts No, Scotland hasn’t lost the plot.
There are a great number of us up here who have been emailing their SMPs, protesting, etc. The only replies I have ever had have been from Scottish Tories and Scottish Labour.
I’m in Dundee, and the two SNP SMPs who represent the city have never, not once deigned to reply. (Should add here that I’ve also emailed my SNP MP about several different issues including my concerns about this Bill, etc. over the last few years and he has replied to every one of them).
It’s the SNP and the Scottish Greens led by the odious Patrick Harvie who have lost the plot. We’ll find out tomorrow who voted which way.
I voted Green for years when they were a party that actually cared about environmental issues but that time has sadly long gone.

I'd have thought a convicted sex offender is incapable of making a reasoned decision about their gender.

I wish genders would just go away so that people can simply be different individuals.

FarNorth Wed 21-Dec-22 02:09:33

And another one.

Aveline Wed 21-Dec-22 07:24:21

Madness

FarNorth Wed 21-Dec-22 12:52:05

Comment from Roddy Dunlop KC.

Smileless2012 Wed 21-Dec-22 12:54:51

He was right, "there was no sensible reason anyone could oppose that amendment". Obviously, being sensible has nothing to do with it.

Allsorts Wed 21-Dec-22 14:09:04

Sorry if I offended you Grannydarkhair, I know you and the majority of Scotland are on the side of justice. This horrible group have their own twisted agender, they are not bothered by the rights of women and their children. I hear them on here pushing for gender fluidity, you know it's not right but they have their own reasons and blow the rest.
In my opinion sex offenders have lost their rights to even vote they are the lowest form of life.
Fingers crossed all will be well.

Aveline Wed 21-Dec-22 14:21:18

The scene outside Holyrood today. Scottish people not happy!!
