These have been mentioned from time over the psst few years; notably in connection with the Leave the EU campaigns in 2016 and with concerns about the effect they can have on voter choices and democracy when the information in them is only seen by a selected audience and is not freely available for all voters to see, so no-one can counter any lies or untruths in them.

The adverts had been released to the Digital, Cultural, Media and Sport parliamentary select committee by facebook and formed an appendix to their report on the media conduct of the 2016 referendum. I looked for them a couple of years ago and they seemed to have been removed but it appears that the links have been restored.

Here they are. Adverts placed on facebook by Vote Leave, Leave EU and the DUP. Shown only to facebook users who were unsure or undecided as to which way to vote.

They ring somewhat hollow in view of the disintegration of the UK we've experienced since 2016...

But what concerns me is the potential for the use of targeted ads in General Elections. As far as I know they haven't been made illegal.
