World-famous entertainers will perform at Windsor Castle as part of a weekend of celebrations to mark the King's coronation, it has been announced.
The concert will be broadcast on the BBC on 7 May featuring "global music icons", orchestras and a diverse "coronation choir".

Which 'global icons' would you expect to see on stage?

I'm another that thinks the monarchy is well past its sell-by date. But if we have to keep it (for now!) surely the coronation shouldn't be so lavish, particularly with the current disgraceful levels of poverty and hardship in the the UK. A simple inauguration as happens in other European monarchies would suffice. But no, we have to go the whole hog - bread and circuses once more. If there's to be a concert I suggest the inclusion of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come".

If it is anything like the cringeworthy jubilee "concert" I will not be listening .... what is wrong with a lovely orchestral concert with British performers? We have wonderful orchestras and musicians... the Kanneh Masons, Welsh harpists, Nichola Benedetti. Charlie Boy loves opera ... let's have a quality concert please!

Oh, how I agree with you! These dumbed down concerts are embarrassing. They must give such a bad impression internationally. Even for those who enjoy that kind of thing, they seem inappropriate for the occasion.

I don’t think it will happen, though.

nanna8 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:51:43

I hope it is as gaudy and glitzy as possible. If you’re gonna do it, do it properly and entertain everyone. That’s all it is ,really, entertaining the masses.

volver Tue 24-Jan-23 11:48:39

Yes Gabrielle, but what about the concert? I mean that's what the thread is about. hmm

Gabrielle56 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:46:53

Agree that the old "mumbo Jumbo" needs a serious scrapping too. Away with the "born to rule" poo.and the anointing with dishwater from the Jordan puddle! Talk about heathen idolatry? They're the most ruthless cruel and brutal that was on offer for the last 1000+ years that's all folks! Slashing and burning their way to the top does not mean that they're the best, slim it down to modern values and try and persuade us that less is more in straitened times . TV specials on iPlayers should do it!

I would like to see choirs from each of the four nations like they have on Last Night of the Proms as well a a gospel choir.

Please, only one elderly pop artiste and preferably one who still has a voice like Tom Jones.

Modern, diverse acts and a tribute to musical theatre would float my boat and hopefully Charles would have a say in the overall content because I don’t think the late Queen was all that bothered about music so was probably happy to just leave it to the organisers.

I didn't mean you. Best RTFT before telling people how you think they should post.

You going to have a go at Kalu?

Gabrielle56 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:42:27

I'm no monarchist trust me, I just like a thread on subject, save time!

Kalu Tue 24-Jan-23 11:41:40

What a huge disappointment he is, agreeing to continue with this pomp when the country is in dire straits.
NHS, Foodbank, homeless etc etc. It’s sickening.

Gabrielle56 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:40:36

These concerts are always cringeworthy as they're usually organised by non gig organisers! Try in Ng to please all the people just doesn't works. Personally I'm fed up of Brian May/sir Beatle McCartney/Louise(?)/anyone called spice/dreadful live versions of rap/anyone owning a has been or flagging career being trundled out as "trendy" or"popular". I'd go to the classical side with choirs of all ages ,home grown talent and celebration of all British productions. Having it kept tight and shorter than the excruciating 3hours+ usually Imposed and pleeeease no outdoor performances , concert halls are there for a reason and televised coverage is enough for anyone.this avoids disruption to highways and byways and ensuing costs.
As for street parties? Yuk! Awful and of the forelock tugging era, set up in the days when there was no TV for majority and a jelly and bunting party was as good as it got for most! Old hat and cringey.

He presides over the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

No he doesn't.

Volver it's ok to have strong opinions , although also it's ok to try and keep to subject too! The subject is the coronation, not whether we need a monarch.

I quote myself: Yes I did. I started a new thread because I didn't want to take over the thread where the royalists were enjoying themselves. But if you make the effort to sling some mud at me on a thread I had decided to stay away from, then all bets are off.

So no high horses required, just slightly less rude monarchists.

Cossy Tue 24-Jan-23 11:37:24

There will be many of us who will enjoy the pomp and circumstance of the coronation, whilst I think we need a “slimmed down” monarchy in terms of financing them and whilst I’m not a royalist per say I’m not sure what the poor man has done which is so awful ! He presides over the Duke of Edinburgh Award which is a great scheme and challenge for young people and started The Princes Trust, which has benefitted young people. He is environmentally aware and employs many many people - what’s so awful about him ? Shall we give the poor old bugger a chance to show us how he is as King ? Personally I’m proud of our country when we put on “a show” and even if he sold the Crown Jewels and properties the monies would no doubt go to our government and “disappear” not be spent directly on our homeless and needy people !

icanhandthemback Tue 24-Jan-23 11:35:46

Maybe some more modern black stars rather than the many white stars being mentioned on here. Also looking at some of the stars from the different nations that make up the UK? We could make this a diverse and inclusive event.

SecondhandRose Tue 24-Jan-23 11:33:21

Hopefully Lewis Capaldi for the Scottish contingent. A very funny young man.

As much as I love Rod, The Stones, Queen, McCartney and Elton I think they need to make way for younger blood.

Maremia Tue 24-Jan-23 11:24:07

Just as a point of information, how much actual tax payers money will be wasted, I mean spent, on any and all of the Coronation activities?

Forsythia Tue 24-Jan-23 11:23:35

I think it would be nice to just have British or Comonwealth singers, celebrities in these performances. Taylor Swift is American. There is more than enough homegrown talent to do it. Hopefully, not Paul McCartney.

Nan0 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:17:18

Agree!!

notgran Sun 22-Jan-23 22:54:24

I enjoyed the Jubilee last year, I have attended a few events over the years where various members of the Royal Family have been in attendance. I am a supporter of GB having Royalty. However this morning OH and I decided the Prince Andrew/ H&M etc etc will just spoil the things I would usually enjoy. It sounds as though it won't be all that spectacular so we have booked a mini break in Europe over that weekend.

NanKate Sun 22-Jan-23 22:45:01

My choice Michael Buble, Jools Holland and his Orchestra, Vanessa Mae, traditional Scottish band, Queen and Adam Lambert, Ed Sheeran and Andre Bocelli and a gospel choir. That should do it. 🥳🥳

Jaxjacky Sun 22-Jan-23 21:57:48

As it’s going ahead, I’d like to see some more modern bands, not wheeling out the oldies. Taylor Swift, Lewis Capaldi, Weeknd, to name a few.

There seem to be quite a few people who would like to see a slimmed down monarchy. I commented on another thread that the last coronation in Sweden was in 1873. One poster pointed out that it was irrelevant to tell what happens in other countries.
If we can't learn from others we are only damaging ourselves. But then we always know best, don't we?

MiniMoon Sun 22-Jan-23 19:07:07

I love a bit of pageantry and am looking forward to watching the coronation. I saw the coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11 but being 18 months old I don't remember any of it.
As for the entertainment, I expect there will be Paul McCartney, Brian May and Adam Lambert and Queen. Katherine Jenkins and possibly Bryn Terfel.
