A new gold coach?

I heard somewhere, I’ve no idea where, that there maybe a new gold coach for the coronation. I’ve no idea where I heard this, perhaps I dreamt it, but I feel that I heard it somewhere. A new gold coach is necessary because the old one is darn uncomfortable. Of course it wouldn’t be solid gold, maybe it wouldn’t even be gold at all, just painted gold and with superior springs.
Is it true? Does anyone know? Or did I actually dream it?

Well, there's something afoot!
But it hasn't been officially announced.

I'm in Australia, and I live near to where Jim Frecklington built the two coaches which he donated to HM The Queen. These were the Australian State Coach, donated and first used in 1988 for the Australian Bicentennial. And then there was the Diamond Jubilee State Coach , donated and first used in 2014.

Jim Frecklington builds these coaches purely for the love of it - he is a total craftsman and does a beautiful job. The coaches take years to make - there is no way that he could announce the building of one, and have it ready to donate in a few months.

As far as I'm aware, there has not been any announcement that he is planning on a coach for King Charles. There has certainly not been any news about it from him .

Could be a job to park at the shopping centre though.

I think I'd need 4 spaces 😁 at least!

Is there a boot for the shopping?

It might have been state of the art 200 odd years, ago but it’s a glittering farm wagon with the body suspended on leather straps.
Best place should be in a museum.

Is the Australian craftsman a client ?

We couldn’t accept gifts from our clients, either. Normal practice but it doesn’t apply to everyone, clearly.

Isn't it a State coach so wouldn't be a personal gift to the Monarch?

That being said, I might ask to borrow it afterwards, we can all take a turn. Must get the drive power-washed first and the garage cleared of junk DH's essential items.

And henceforth, we should all turn down unsolicited gifts, regardless of the feelings of the giver?
I'll accept it gracefully.
It could be useful for nipping down to the supermarket or the pub. It could cause a stir parked on the drive.
I'd have to convert the garage into stables.

The thing is, I’d have accepted it gracefully too and I don’t even have a garage to convert.

I imagine part of the gift idea, is the marketing aspect for the giver?

I once had to turn down a scented candle, a gift offered to me at work.

Obviously the same rules don't apply for very expensive gifts offered to hereditary rulers who have more carriages than I've had hot dinners.

Maybe they’ll ship it over on a cruise ship so all those thousands of passengers can get a preview? The blokes business will boom- coach maker to the King and all that. He’s not so daft.

With reference to the OP the original state coach is made of giltwood which is a thin layer of gold leaf over wood. I don't know what the new coach is made of, presumably wood but maybe just painted gold?

Chestnut Mon 23-Jan-23 14:59:10

Oh no! We don't want Charles arriving with a slipped disk and unable to perform the ceremony. I'm serious. If that coach is really bumpy maybe he should travel back in it and not to the ceremony.

Callistemon21 Mon 23-Jan-23 14:18:04

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am not
Love it! 😄

Yes, Charles does suffer with his back. He's 74.
His mother was 27 at her coronation and said how uncomfortable the coach was then.

Joseanne Mon 23-Jan-23 14:08:15

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am not, didn't Harry talk in the book about Charles' severe ongoing back pain? I think he said it was due to too much polo playing.

Quite a bit of climate damage when it is flown from Sydney to London, surely?

Yep! May be offset by any passengers extending their own carbon footprint flying off on holiday though.

Chestnut Mon 23-Jan-23 13:35:11

Oh dear, I would probably throw up if I had to travel in it. I'm really bad at sea and even in cars (back seat). I hope Charles and Camilla don't have any sea sickness issues.

I understood that it was the suspension that was causing problems, not the upholstery, similarly in some of the other royal carriages. I seem to remember that the Princess of Wales felt nauseous the first time she rode in one. The Queen described the motion in the gold coach as like tossing in an rough sea (or words to that effect) I would imagine a nice new one will be welcomed with open arms - I don’t think I would say no.

Oh yes, I have got that coronation souvenir as well, one of the horses has only got half a leg, but otherwise looking good. I keep it safely with a coronation service programme. The next two generations have taken them to school when there were jubilees etc. It will be interesting to compare the King’s service, with the one in the previous programme.

biglouis Mon 23-Jan-23 12:56:47

I said this on another thread that if KC really was in tune with modern times he would cancel the coronation with all the religious mumbo jumbo and opt for a quick (and much cheaper) Scandi style declaration ceremony. This should be put to a public vote.

Hellogirl1 Mon 23-Jan-23 12:50:44

Callistemon, I had one of those coaches back in 1953, but it fell apart from over use. I loved it. Also had a mug of chocolates, the picture of the Queen changed to Prince Philip when wiggled about. My hubby was given a silver spoon at school for the coronation, I still have it upstairs in it`s box, still looking like new.

Chestnut Mon 23-Jan-23 12:43:37

I have to confess, I've just bought one in a box with white horses on E-Bay. My granddaughter will love it. 🤭
