Camilla - Queen Consort surely?

In my lifetime the Queen Consort was generally referred to as the Queen. QC is accurate in the case of non-regnal Q's but it has always been dropped in the past.

When George 5th died, his wife was referred to as Queen Mary and the wife of George 6th Queen Elizabeth. As George 6th died before his mother, Queen Mary was still Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth became QEQM and eventually QE2 became The Queen.

I like the name Camilla (and I like her) but I think I’ll find it hard not to think of Queen Elizabeth II when somebody says “the Queen”.

Not all Kings or Queens use their first names, but her second name is Rosemary. Whilst it's a nice name, Queen Camilla sounds better than Queen Rosemary.

Yes, Camilla is an older name than I realised - but it’s still not traditional in the Royal Family. I recall seeing the Queen (QE2) showing some old paintings of her ancestors to a visiting VIP, and saying that the names didn’t change much - Georges, Edwards, Annes, Elizabeths. I think the name Victoria was a new one at the time, though.

However, you are right - traditions have to start somewhere.

I thought it was a Roman name, so pretty traditional - as was Diana.

Yes, she was Roman, daughter of a King. I read some of Virgil's Aeneid many moons ago, starring Camilla the warrior.

Ironically, she was a favourite of the goddess Diana.

I read in the paper to-day after the coronation the consort bit will be dropped.

She’ll be Queen Consort, but known as Queen Camilla. No problem with that. Besides, it will be fun to watch all the sniping about it.

All non reigning queens are Queen consorts, when George 6
died we had queen Mary, queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth 2nd.
