Camilla - Queen Consort surely?

Twice this week while in the newsagent’s, I noticed that the Daily Express has taken to referring to Camilla as The Queen, both in a front page headline and a news story.
Surely this is incorrect? I understood the title could only be used with a female born ‘into’ the role as it were.

I think we all knew that the “Consort” bit would drop away. It is still used in anything official and (dare I say) in the better areas of the press. tcrgrin

Alexandra, Mary, Elizabeth QM were are called Queen but were Queen consorts

MerylStreep Sat 25-Feb-23 11:21:09

She has been referred to as The Queen for some time now.

MawtheMerrier Sat 25-Feb-23 11:21:42

Technically they wee referred to as Queen A, Queen M and Queen E (the latter to distinguish her from QE2

PS - my “superior knowledge “ is mostly gleaned from The Crown tcrgrintcrgrin

consort is just a ridiculous word

JaneJudge Sat 25-Feb-23 11:23:42

and if you say it in a particular accent it sounds like concert

Only while we remember QE II. I can’t thinking one occasion when “consort” was added to Queens Alexandra, Mary and Elizabeth (QEQM in later life)

Katie59 Sat 25-Feb-23 11:59:54

Officially Camilla is “The Queen”

Kate54 Sat 25-Feb-23 12:06:07

Bit too soon for my liking! I got quite a shock reading this particular headline - it was about Camilla’s view on the Roald Dahl debate. The Queen couldn’t possibly have a view!

And which magazine was that in Kate?

I have a feeling you enjoy being "shocked" by such sillyness.

Stands to reason that she'll be referred too as Queen rather than Queen Consort.

merlotgran Sat 25-Feb-23 14:18:38

Queen consorts we’re always referred to as Queen (first name) when carrying out official duties on their own but when with their husbands it was always the King and Queen (no first names)

So she is Queen Camilla - no need for consort other than the fact that it was QE II’s decision that Camilla should be referred to as Queen Consort.

🤔

The term Consort does not sound right. She is married to the King and should be known as the Queen, which it what I would prefer. She is already referred to as her Majesty which is fine by me.

Daddima Sat 25-Feb-23 14:27:44

When she and Charles were married, it was said that when he became King, Camilla would be referred to as Princess Consort. Later, Queen Elizabeth said it was her wish that Camilla be Queen Consort. I thought we all expected that the ‘Consort’ bit would disappear!

Grandma70s Sat 25-Feb-23 14:29:01

I just refer to her as Camilla. I’m not ready to give up QE2 just yet. In our family we tend to refer to her as ‘the proper Queen’ or ‘the real Queen’.

BlueBelle Sat 25-Feb-23 14:55:22

Fine by me, she’s is the queen now, seems a good enough person to meno problem with her

Kate54 Sat 25-Feb-23 16:29:42

It wasn’t a magazine DaisyAnne, it was the front page of the Daily Express. No other newspapers are yet doing this. Perhaps ‘shocked ‘ was the wrong word. ‘Surprised’ may have been preferable. It wasn’t a matter of enjoying it. I am just interested in accuracy, particularly in the media, and my question was a genuine one.

AGAA4 Sat 25-Feb-23 16:36:44

Just easier to call her the Queen or Queen Camilla.

HousePlantQueen Sat 25-Feb-23 17:19:39

and if you say it in a particular accent it sounds like concert

and if you say it in a certain tone, it sounds like the alternative meaning of the word

habitually associate with (someone), typically with the disapproval of others.

For info, I have no feeling one way another about Camilla.

MawtheMerrier Sat 25-Feb-23 17:27:21

Prince Albert was known as the Prince Consort and the term is still used of him today. There are Prince Consort pubs, Prince Consort roads, and the Prince Consorts’s Own RifleBrigafe.
Let’s face it, it’s a relatively unfamiliar expression for most people and as such may sound strange to them.

MawtheMerrier Sat 25-Feb-23 17:27:48

Oops Rifle Brigade

lemsip Sat 25-Feb-23 17:53:19

I was shocked to see this headline. It should be Queen Consort! I thought of the queen who hasn't long been dead.

This is a way of 'sliding' her in as queen.

Anniebach Sat 25-Feb-23 18:00:39

The Queen mother was called Queen not Queen consort
