BBC News - Sturgeon's husband arrested in SNP finance probe
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-65187823

I am sorry to read this as I had faith in the SNP. I hope that a police investigation into this matter will bring out the truth of the matter.

Aveline Thu 06-Apr-23 16:39:10

Er sorry but what about the drop of 30,000 members of SNP?

volver3 Thu 06-Apr-23 16:21:33

Kandinsky

I wonder what the future holds for the SNP?
They’ve lost an awful lot of support in recent years so it really does look like an uphill struggle.

Really?

Now I know that some people get very annoyed if anyone asks for proof but can you help me understand how the SNP "have lost an awful lot of support in recent years?"

Just the 50% (ish) of the Scottish Parliament and 45 out of 59 Scottish Seats in Westminster "in recent years".

Just saying something doesn't make it true Kandinsky.

Trial by the media is so common now. I don’t know what has gone on and am not a fan of Nicola, but she was bound to resign with such a public interest in her husband. She obviously loves him and he comes first as mine would with me. We don’t know what he’s said to her and what she made of it. Hope for her sake he is not guilty. The saying hate the sin but love the sinner holds true. When you have a close relationship you have the choice, do I stay or go. Not a good place to be if you kept to the rules. The awful press attention is more than most if us could cope with. Look how Cliff Richards was treated!

Police face questions – nothing about the person who was arrested and no accusations.

You’re nicked – factually correct, if a little vulgar.

Daily Mail, which I decline to copy – it’s a question, therefore they can say that the answer's “no”.

I’m going to stop with this now, it's too close to what we’re told not to do.

Here's a few from the BBC website

volver3 Thu 06-Apr-23 15:53:44

They probably say things like "Sturgeon's husband arrested in connection with police investigation."

Which is factually true.

Posters on here strayed into saying who they thought was guilty of a crime that we don't even know ever happened and what people would think of it in the future.

Which is dangerous speculation.

Aveline Thu 06-Apr-23 15:44:04

I'm just back from shopping. I wish I'd photographed the news stand. Every newspaper headline about Murrell was splashed over the front pages along with screeds of text. Journalists are having a field day. Obviously didn't have the benefit of Volver's early youth!

Also, that event was not a criminal investigation with the potential to involve a trial, but was a breaking of the "Rules".

It was the crime of the century for some on here and nothing less than life imprisonment, even death, should have been the punishment.

It is comical reading through such tribal behaviour and lack of self awareness.

Hermother Thu 06-Apr-23 13:17:52

Ah yes, a breaking of covid rules. Quite minor now looking back.

volver3 Thu 06-Apr-23 13:11:31

Do you not Hersmother?

You were surely not paying attention.

Have another look and try to find something incriminating. Also, that event was not a criminal investigation with the potential to involve a trial, but was a breaking of the "Rules".

Hermother Thu 06-Apr-23 13:08:01

I don't remember you being so reticent in discussing the police investigation into Boris Johnson and partygate volver. Although to be fair, he wasn't actually arrested was he?

volver3 Thu 06-Apr-23 13:00:39

When I was younger, everybody knew that you didn't talk about cases that were "under" the police. Even wee bairns knew that if you talked about it and either gave something away, or accused somebody of something, or whatever, then that wasn't allowed. Whether it was about the laddie who stole sweeties from RS McColl or about the Prime Minister, you didn't talk about it, much less put it in writing.

Private Eye have a shed-load of lawyers at their back and I'm quite sure they phrase things to make sure they stay on the side of the law. I don't expect many Grans have phalanxes of lawyers behind them. (Except maybe GSM wink)

Article here from The National on contempt of court in Scotland:

So the Independent can write about it and the BBC present interviews about it but we mustn't comment here on our wee posting forum for Grannies?

volver3 Thu 06-Apr-23 12:25:23

So?

Hermother Thu 06-Apr-23 12:15:43

From the Independent,

"‘Hard to believe’ probe not factor in Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation, says former SNP minister
Former Scottish Government minister Alex Neil said it is “hard to believe” that Peter Murrell’s arrest was not a factor in Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation as first minister."

"The Salmond-era health secretary told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Well, Nicola did resign very suddenly. Everybody and their granny knew about this investigation."

“There were very strong rumours for the last couple of months that some kind of arrest was possibly imminent, so it’s hard to believe that it wasn’t a factor in Nicola’s consideration. Given that a large number of people had been interviewed, including staff at SNP headquarters, it’s hard to believe Nicola wasn’t aware.”

Enforceable throughout the UK.

It is indeed. Scots Law on contempt of court is quite clear on that.

Remember that this case is still under investigation and that writing anything that would prejudice the case is out of order, even if you don't believe it to be the truth.

Serious question.. Would that be enforceable in England, NI and Wales? Or just Scotland?

Released without charge! Good! But what was all that about?

Remains under investigation though.

I think he could only be held for a certain amount of time, maybe 12 hours, then would have to be released, probably with instructions to remain contactable.Sadly, the damage is done, and in time will be remembered as he and his wife stealing the dosh for their own use.

I would never trust an organisation that could not see the dangers of having a related couple...holding the two key roles in an organisation.

That'll be News International out the window then.

Walmart, Ford, BMW, ALDI, Nike.... IKEA, I think?
