Asylum seekers

I have a family of friends who are asylum seekers. A couple of years ago, they got their visas, after waiting 13 years. I was pleased for them, but didn't know how they finally got their approval.

Today I found out that the 17 year old daughter (now 19) wrote to Priti Patel and outlined for her the trauma and mental health problems caused to the whole family by inhumanity of the process. Being moved around the country for housing, (1 bedroom for a family of 4) constant changing of schools (affecting the 17 year old's education), inability to work until they had visas, being unable to take the furniture they managed to acquire when they were transferred outside their local area.

Unbelievably, Priti Patel contacted the Home Office on behalf of the family as a direct result of the letter and authorised their visas.

The daughter told me the story today as if she'd done nothing out of the ordinary. Saved her family's security at the age of 17. I was speechless. What an amazing young woman!

Well done to her, she has a lot of potential. Taking the initiative can work. Wishing her well.

That makes me think your esteemed leader has a bit of a heart after all!

I know. Shocked me. The girl is clearly a bit more politically savvy now than she was at 17 and is surprised, herself.

Good to hear that Priti Patel acted upon the letter.

We are missing out on so many potentially good people trained solicitors, doctors, dentists we are desperate for
The country is built on refugees, and movement of cultures
This government is SOOOOOO shortsighted and far right that it’s terrifying
People forget that the people able to travel to the west are those with money to pay for the help they just need a start then will give back a hundredfold
I ll swop a refugee for one of our drug soaked layabouts any day
No need for camps/ barges etc if they employed enough people to move them in or on quickly and gave them work permits as soon as possible then our fruit and teeth wouldn’t rot so quickly
Well done that young lady

Yes Bluebell. The mum, my friend, is a qualified primary school teacher. But her qualification isn't recognised here, so she works as a teaching assistant but teaches independently a lot of the time (group work). Lucky school, getting a teacher for a TA salary.

What an uplifting piece of news. It shows what can and should be done. Maybe there is more of that going on than we know.

All children are the future and need every chance. They deserve to be recognised and aided.

You do realise we can't move to another country and get our qualifications recognised without examination. Locally we had had some midwives from various countries, and welcome they are, but are having to undergo vigorous examinations and mentorship before they can even be autonomous. Rightly so.
