Lead story on BBC evening news

The lead story on the BBC 6.00pm news is that a member of SClub7 has passed away . Is this really a lead story? I know they were a popular band in their era and were in the process of making a come back tour. But really isn't this normally a 3 rd or 4th story. The on going troubles in the Gaza was the second story. I do wonder where we are going when popular culture over takes world news.

Agreed- not top news. What is happening in occupied Palestine is terrorism, apartheid and illegal occupation and war.

Grandma70s Fri 07-Apr-23 18:20:45

I was shocked by this. It just is not a lead news story, however sad it may be for those involved. I thought BBC news was supposed to be going more international.

Tucked away 15 mins into the programme, was that a 12 year old has been arrested for running down a women in her 60s .

I had heard of SClub7, but had never heard of the unfortunate member who died, not my era.

I, too, thought it was a strange item to lead with.

BlueBelle Fri 07-Apr-23 18:36:27

I know of S club 7 but never heard of the guy hardly front page news I agree ridiculous the whole world is falling to pieces and …..

Kandinsky Fri 07-Apr-23 18:37:02

Agree.

Ilovecheese Fri 07-Apr-23 19:11:02

I didn't see this but I feel a bit differently about it. So many people are fighting each other at the moment, why should they always get all the attention, it might do the warmongers good to be ignored.

dogsmother Fri 07-Apr-23 19:13:10

It’s plainly just the latest news in, not the top news story.

welbeck Fri 07-Apr-23 20:02:05

well, on sky news just now, it was mentioned 3rd or 4th.
started with Gaza.

I suppose the choice of top story is for the editor on duty. It must be tricky to choose between, say, Ukraine and Trump's arraignment or between the SNP investigation and events in Israel/Palestine. I often feel inadequate time is given to news interviews on all channels - ' we have to leave it there' just as the interview is beginning to yield important material so they can move on to another planned slot.

I suspect that the person who decided this was the most important news was younger than most of us.

If a Rolling Stone or former Beatle died would we expect that to be top news?

Dinahmo Sat 08-Apr-23 10:06:21

I've always assumed that the news on BBC1 was for the masses and that if you wanted to see full news then you need to watch on the News Channel.

I don't think the death of a 'celebrity' of any sort should be top of the news items. There's so much bad stuff going on it must be hard to choose what to mention first. The sad death of a very minor celebrity is surely not headline stuff.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 08-Apr-23 10:15:41

I think this made the news due to the recent announcement that S Club 7 have reformed and going on tour this year, which has already sold out apparently.

Went to see them years ago when DD was in primary school, they did put on an excellent show.

Dinahmo Sat 08-Apr-23 10:22:39

Most of us are too old to know much about S Club 7. They belong to a younger generation, probably your children.

It is sad but I've noticed that more and more with BBC News, they include long items of gossip on the world of celebrity and sport.

This is very sad as this man was very young to die suddenly and yes, it was newsworthy but I agree that it was surprising that it was the main item with all that is going on here and in the wider world.

If you look at the right wing media - just check out dailymailonline , you will find that gossip about "celebs" is the main draw that gets the readers into consuming the poisonous right wing political opinions.

That is how our national newspapers, owned and controlled by foreign or tax dodging billionaires influence the voters who buy and read The Sun, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express etc.

eazybee Mon 10-Apr-23 19:33:16

Oh dear, Varian.
Smug doesn't begin to cover it.

varian Mon 10-Apr-23 20:38:11

What is smug about pointing out the right wing bias of our national press eazybee?

It doesn’t seem smug to me.

What about any far left poisonous opinions? Or Lib Dem poisonous opinions? Which papers are acceptable to read according to Varian? hmm

It doesn't seem smug to me either. I find it frightening when a Newspaper sells more copies with an Obit of a pop singer or so-called celebrity as headlines when all that is going on in Ukraine and Jerusalem and Gaza.
It shows what a world we live in, unfortunately.

Agreed- not top news. What is happening in occupied Palestine is terrorism, apartheid and illegal occupation and war.

What is happening in Israel is the murder of two young Israeli girls and their mother by terrorists firing into their car. The family were British Israelis and had moved to Israel a few years ago, possibly because of the antisemitism British Jews feel they are being subjected to in recent years.

Yes, I agree Granny, the death of a pop star, apparently by natural causes, is sad, but should not really be the first news item.
