^Surely the only emergency that would affect us all would be a nuclear attack. What could we do about that?^

Precisely Kircubbin but nobody seems to have twigged on to that - on here at least. I believe that’s what it’s for and several people I’ve spoken to think the same.

I think we’re supposed to hide under the table 😁

Well, you get a 4 minute Alert on your mobile phone if you have one and it's not switched off. Just time to dig a trench in the back garden!

I can't see what the issue is..?
Few years ago in New York my and the others in party, Phones all pinged up an Alert message, asking everyone to please look out for a missing Child.
We all thought it was a good idea.

We have the cell phone emergency system in place, and during the first test there were many phones that did not sound the alarm. Once reported, the authorities were able to find out why are correct the issue. They had another test a few months later with better results. It was found certain cell phone companies didn't have the proper technology to receive or transmit the alarm.

A few tests later, all is working fine, and we have had no alarms since. Apparently it was used 7 times provincially last year, for fire, flood, and civil emergency (not sure what the incidences were).

The test is useful in my mind. The alarm can be sounded regionally, using certain cell towers in a radius of a disaster. If there was a derailment of a train, for example, and fears the smoke was toxic, they could warn people in the area to move to safety very quickly.

i'm baffled by so much suspicion and kind of resentment/indignation.
i think it's a v good thing.
made sure all phones are able to receive it.
am quite looking forward to it.

I thought it was for localised flooding or similar

MayBee70 Tue 18-Apr-23 21:23:22

Do I have to do anything when it goes off?

Grannybags Tue 18-Apr-23 21:17:48

I don't see what the problem is. Why wouldn't you want to know if there is a life threatening situation nearby?

Grandmafrench Tue 18-Apr-23 20:48:44

Hello GGravy, question not directed at you. Sorry, missed your exchange with JJacky as I posted at almost the same time. Seems that (on here at least) most people are singing from the same hymn sheet. But it seems that there has been so much advice printed and offered in the media as to how to disable this one alarm, that I wondered just what is everyone's objection? Looks like I'll not find out and maybe, apart from vague thoughts of 'Nanny state", I've run out of ideas.

Ooooh Deedaa - although I suppose you did always know at exactly 10am on Mondays you were quite safe ! 👀

Deedaa Tue 18-Apr-23 20:35:09

I live quite near Broadmoor and when we first moved here 20 years ago they used to sound their warning siren at 10 am every Monday.

tickingbird Tue 18-Apr-23 20:31:41

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. My only concern is why now but I have a suspicious nature.

rosie1959 Tue 18-Apr-23 20:29:18

If anyone is that bothered just switch your phone to airplane mode it will then stop the alarm sounding.
I won't be disabling mine I can see little point I also have a SOS alarm on my phone for an elderly relative.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 18-Apr-23 20:21:06

Certainly not bothered by it Grandmafrench if we were at home wouldn’t have disabled the alert.

We live uphill of a disastrous flood where many lost their lives, I think it’s a good idea.

I can still remember the monthly siren tests.

Grandmafrench Tue 18-Apr-23 20:15:24

A genuine question - is it felt by most that this is an intrusion? The little that I’ve heard from British news is that it’s a demonstration of how a public warning via mobile phones will be used if something really bad is happening and/or which is a threat to life ? But that this one occasion is just to illustrate what happens, so that everyone with such phones has a better chance to avoid a major event in future, weather event, terrorist attack, etc., Hope I’ve got that right.

I do object to a lot! But I can’t see the reason for objecting to this. Our own (lower tech) local warning system here in France involves sirens wailing as a test for about 3 minutes on the first Wednesday of every month at noon. Hear that any other time and we’re in trouble. Nobody minds, people are reassured by the existence of such systems. I can certainly think of bigger reasons to be annoyed just by the daily bombardment of junk and nuisance calls on my ‘phone.

Jaxjacky

Out of interest, why are you turning it off?

Because we are out for lunch, I am not a fan of phones with food

I know it can be turned off GG - it doesn’t bother me at all, but I wonder if the football ground will make an announcement to that effect before kick off. There could be up to 40,000 phones in the ground on Sunday.

I tend to think that the majority of folks with a smart phone are smart enough to know how their phones work .

Disclaimer DH hasn’t a clue.

BlueBelle Tue 18-Apr-23 19:43:08

Doesn’t bother me it’s onl6 on for a matter of seconds

Doesn't bother me either.

Foxygloves Tue 18-Apr-23 19:38:05

Actually as I have no plans to be anywhere requiring silence or driving at the time, I am curious to know what it will sound like.
Tusting that I never have to hear it again for any natural or other disaster.
