I have turned my two alert apps off

Look at sky.com there is a helpful video link posted by a womans refuge on how to do it. further down the video comments is some very helpful info wrt how to turn off the two alerts on an older smart phone, which is what I used

What if someone is driving?

You can turn off the alert through settings on iPhones and androids.

Oops premature posting…

I have already turned mine off, will turn it back on Sunday evening after the event.

SinL and his DF will be at St James Park on Sunday afternoon. It’s going to be deafening if and when everyone’s phone goes off! We are wondering if the second half, due at 3pm will be postponed for a couple of minutes.

It’s possible to turn off the alert alarm on your phone anytime you wish, no need to have it on at 3pm on Sunday.

it is the emergency alert that seems to have popped into phones during an update, not the normal alerts

I know it can be turned off GG - it doesn’t bother me at all, but I wonder if the football ground will make an announcement to that effect before kick off. There could be up to 40,000 phones in the ground on Sunday.

Foxygloves Tue 18-Apr-23 19:38:05

Actually as I have no plans to be anywhere requiring silence or driving at the time, I am curious to know what it will sound like.
Tusting that I never have to hear it again for any natural or other disaster.

Doesn't bother me either.

Doesn’t bother me it’s onl6 on for a matter of seconds

Sarah75 Tue 18-Apr-23 19:45:52

Is it these two settings? (At the bottom)

wildswan16 Tue 18-Apr-23 19:57:45

Yes Sarah75. Turn them both off.

Jaxjacky Tue 18-Apr-23 20:11:30

Out of interest, why are you turning it off?

I tend to think that the majority of folks with a smart phone are smart enough to know how their phones work .

Disclaimer DH hasn’t a clue.

Because we are out for lunch, I am not a fan of phones with food

A genuine question - is it felt by most that this is an intrusion? The little that I’ve heard from British news is that it’s a demonstration of how a public warning via mobile phones will be used if something really bad is happening and/or which is a threat to life ? But that this one occasion is just to illustrate what happens, so that everyone with such phones has a better chance to avoid a major event in future, weather event, terrorist attack, etc., Hope I’ve got that right.

I do object to a lot! But I can’t see the reason for objecting to this. Our own (lower tech) local warning system here in France involves sirens wailing as a test for about 3 minutes on the first Wednesday of every month at noon. Hear that any other time and we’re in trouble. Nobody minds, people are reassured by the existence of such systems. I can certainly think of bigger reasons to be annoyed just by the daily bombardment of junk and nuisance calls on my ‘phone.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 18-Apr-23 20:21:06

Certainly not bothered by it Grandmafrench if we were at home wouldn’t have disabled the alert.

We live uphill of a disastrous flood where many lost their lives, I think it’s a good idea.

I can still remember the monthly siren tests.

rosie1959 Tue 18-Apr-23 20:29:18

If anyone is that bothered just switch your phone to airplane mode it will then stop the alarm sounding.
I won't be disabling mine I can see little point I also have a SOS alarm on my phone for an elderly relative.

tickingbird Tue 18-Apr-23 20:31:41

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. My only concern is why now but I have a suspicious nature.

Deedaa Tue 18-Apr-23 20:35:09

I live quite near Broadmoor and when we first moved here 20 years ago they used to sound their warning siren at 10 am every Monday.

Grandmafrench Tue 18-Apr-23 20:48:44

Hello GGravy, question not directed at you. Sorry, missed your exchange with JJacky as I posted at almost the same time. Seems that (on here at least) most people are singing from the same hymn sheet. But it seems that there has been so much advice printed and offered in the media as to how to disable this one alarm, that I wondered just what is everyone's objection? Looks like I'll not find out and maybe, apart from vague thoughts of 'Nanny state", I've run out of ideas.

Ooooh Deedaa - although I suppose you did always know at exactly 10am on Mondays you were quite safe ! 👀

Grannybags Tue 18-Apr-23 21:17:48

I don't see what the problem is. Why wouldn't you want to know if there is a life threatening situation nearby?

MayBee70 Tue 18-Apr-23 21:23:22

Do I have to do anything when it goes off?

kircubbin2000 Tue 18-Apr-23 21:29:13

Surely the only emergency that would affect us all would be a nuclear attack. What could we do about that?
