Diane Abbott suspended from the Labour Party

The unfortunate tone of the opener on a previous thread, now rightly deleted, has actually detracted from the core issue of Diane Abbott's suspension.. What she actually wrote in her letter to The Observer was that Jews do not face racism. She then went on to claim that what Jews do experience is simply a prejudice which is no worse than that experienced by redheads. Yes, staggering isn't it?.. and how ironic that she chose to express those views in a letter which addressed the topic of "Racism in Britain". Suspended? At the very least...

She has apologised, she isn't anti-semitic, nor is Corbyn. They are pro-Palestine. The weaponising of anti-semitism to purge left wingers and Palestinian supporters from the LP is one of the most disgusting occurrences in its history. It needs to be recognised for what it is.

Why did the Jewish Labour Movement support her suspension?

Because the Jewish Labour Movement is to the right of the LP and support Israel as does Kier Starmer.
The purging of the left wing and of Jewish left wing members is about the most prejudiced actions ever seen in a democratic party. Jewish Voice for Labour speaks for them. But they are the wrong sort of Jews so the actions against them are not apparently anti-semitic www.jewishvoiceforlabour.org.uk/statement/the-ehrc-has-spoken-labour-is-no-place-for-left-wing-jews/

But the majority of Jews themselves don’t agree with the Jewish Voice for Labour standpoint as I understand it, so the Jewish Labour Movement accepting it will accord with the majority perspective. Whatever your perspective though, there’s no denying that as is unfortunately too often the case for her, she engaged her mouth rather than her brain on this occasion, she’s seriously back-pedalled so she knows she was in the wrong.

Strange lady - obviously highly intelligent from her qualifications - but she has the nous of a gnat.

Wisefalcon Sun 23-Apr-23 15:21:29

She always has a knack of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
At 70 years old, time to retire I think.

Smileless2012 Sun 23-Apr-23 15:21:01

Yes MrsNemo I wonder and despair.

MrsNemo Sun 23-Apr-23 15:19:05

This lady appears to have an unfortunate habit of failing to engage her brain; among other jaw dropping utterances over the years, did she not suggest that we could have thirty thousand more policeman and that this would cost the country only £300,000 a year? Do you sometimes wonder how some poeple get voted into positions of power and authority?

She seems to be following the culturally American white supremacist arguments.

I remember Diane Abbott's speech just after she was elected as an MP and was so happy for her. I was optimistic because an under-represented group of people was being represented by a bright young female.

I don't really know what's happened to her, but she does seem to be prone to gaffes. She's an intelligent woman and should have realised how offensive her letter was.

Here is a reference to the Nuremberg Race laws promulgated in Germany by the ruling Nazi party in 1935. It clearly talks about the Jews as a race and penalises those who have Jewish

How anyone can read a clear explanation of how the Nazis classified Jews as a separate race and how the rules governing them excised them other races and then write what was written, eludes me.

Yes, it is indefensible.

She might have apologised, still doesn’t excuse her writing the letter and the. sending it to a National Newspaper for it to be published.

You are defending the indefensible…

Allsorts Sun 23-Apr-23 15:03:11

Does it matter if what Dianne said was about Racism or Religious intolerance? Just her latest gaffe. It’s intolerance and totally out of order, she has no place in government, the apology was only an attempt to excuse herself,

Indeed vintage which is why the Jews are a race of people not just afilliated by religious faith.

growstuff Sun 23-Apr-23 15:00:25

It's not strange at all. The non-Jews with Jewish ancestors and secular Jews were victims of the Holocaust as a result of their connection to Judaism.

vintage1950 Sun 23-Apr-23 14:56:12

It's strange that people still equate anti-semitism with religious prejudice. Christians of Jewish descent also suffered in the Holocaust, as did many Jews with no faith.

lixy Sun 23-Apr-23 14:53:41

Goodness knows what was in her head at the time. 'Fraid I just can't stand her, never have done, and won't be sorry at all if she disappears from public life.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 23-Apr-23 14:48:01

Thank you OP for this as I feel that I can now have a look at this without the undertones of racism evident previously.

Quite frankly, what on earth was she thinking! Or wasn’t she thinking?
Unfortunately her letter of apology seems to make matters worse. She uses the tactic of the far right by saying something, then saying you didn’t mean it.

Starmer acted swiftly and correctly.

However I distance myself entirely from the inevitable racism accompanying the criticism of her letter on social media.

Nandalot Sun 23-Apr-23 14:44:22

I am glad the party have acted quickly to withdraw the whip.

Race is a categorisation of humans based on shared physical or social qualities into groups generally viewed as distinct within a given society. The term came into common usage during the 16th century, when it was used to refer to groups of various kinds including those characterised by close kinship relations.

The Jews are a semitic race of people with a cultural and religious identity which has lasted for 4000 years, since Abraham.

JaneJudge Sun 23-Apr-23 14:41:32

what on earth was she thinking? she is claiming she thought it was a draft confused

Grantanow Sun 23-Apr-23 14:41:12

Totally unacceptable given the experience of Jews throughout history. The Left can't get it into their heads. 'For the many, not the Jew' said it all.

Sparklefizz Sun 23-Apr-23 14:35:12

I think Ms Abbott would benefit from History lessons.

... and Maths ! grin

NanaDana Sun 23-Apr-23 14:35:06

GrannyGravy13

I have read the original published letter and her apology.

I think Ms Abbott would benefit from History lessons.

Agree, GrannyGravy13, but sadly the human race in general has shown a repeated inability to learn from past history, so Diane Abbott has lots of company...

M0nica Sun 23-Apr-23 14:32:39

Judaism is a race and the Labour party currently has a recent past record of antisemitism.

Surely any MP with even one brain cell should have realised that in current time if you are going to talk about racism amd antisemitism , you need to think very carefully about what you say and how you word it and check it out with a range of people in the party.

That an MP with a reputation as a front bencher and Labour party mover and shaker like Diane Abbott should write what she wrote and not, so to speak 'see the problem' seems to indicates that if there is such a thing as personal institutionalised racism, she is a classic example.
