Has announced he will run for a further term. I like him but have doubts about his mental capacity. I would rather see a younger Democrat running.

Don’t you think, volver, that the MoJ have decided it may not be safe to have judges working beyond 75? Would you like to be up before a judge (no jury) over that age who had the power to destroy your life? Wouldn’t you feel just a tad nervous about their ability to make the right decision? Imagine a panel of appellate court judges in their 80s. Would you be worried? I sure as hell would be.

Joe Biden couldn’t run anywhere. He falls asleep in important meetings. He shouldn’t have been in White House at all let alone thinking of running again.

If a judge is incapable of fulfilling their role, I wouldn't want to be up in front of them whether they are 80 or 40.

I wouldn't have worried about being up in front of RBG, even though she was 87.

No, neither would I but had she retired in 2016 or earlier, it is doubtful that Roe v Wade would have been overturned as Obama would have been able to replace her rather than Trump.

He was too old 10 years ago.

Iam64 Thu 27-Apr-23 19:14:41

GSM thanks for the thread. Thanks for your reference to the MoJ and the 75 year age limit for our judges. My experiences of working in family and criminal courts left me with an abiding respect for our Judiciary. Good brains at work there. I’ve no issue with the 75 rule and haven’t met a judge who does.

If Joe Biden is the USA’s only hope of beating Trump or DeSantis he should stand again.

ronib Thu 27-Apr-23 19:51:51

What evidence is there that Biden is the only hope of beating Trump or DeSantis?

What evidence do you have that he isn’t?

I agree, good, informative post, Terribull, as usual.

I've wondered before how it is possible that out of the population of 330 million, there seems to be such a paucity of candidates. Perhaps those most suited have more sense than to run.

David Attenborough, age 96, only has to fulfil those projects he chooses; recently he has filmed the project closest to his heart which he always wanted to do. I do like David enormously, but he can film in short spells and can, if he wishes, do retakes.
That's not possible for a POTUS.

I like Biden. He is experienced and always seems calm.

Seems to me RBG wasn't Trump's deciding SCOTUS vote?

Didn't Trump appoint three justices? (Gorsuch, Trump, Barrett).

Granny Gravy 13 NBC polling found majority of voters don’t want either Biden or Trump. 70 percent of respondents say Biden should not run.
60 percent say Trump should not run.
Wall Street Journal reported majority of voters including many democrats don’t believe Biden should run again.
For example.

Iam64 Thu 27-Apr-23 20:30:35

ronib, none of that matters a hill of beans when there are no other candidates

ronib Thu 27-Apr-23 20:34:25

Doesn’t say much about democracy though does it Iam64?

Iam64 Thu 27-Apr-23 20:40:15

Why does it speak negatively of democracy? It’s better than Putin

ronib Thu 27-Apr-23 20:41:04

Seriously?

I think the bigger 'problem' occurred in 2016, with a year left in POTUS term, Obama nominated Merrick Garland to replace Scalia. The republicans blocked the nomination, refused to vote. Less than a year later new POTUS (trump) nominated Gorsuch - who did fill the vacancy.

I know a judge. I’ve been told by that person that judges used to retire at 70. The age of retirement has been extended to 75 because there are insufficient judges coupled with the difficulty of recruiting judges. Not all lawyers want to be judges for a variety of reasons, not least the possibility of repercussions from those who disagree with their judgments. So it would seem that despite what anyone may think, those who make these rules have decided that the judges may become less competent in their judgments past a certain age and that this possibly is too serious to be allowed to happen. It is therefore not beyond the realms of possibility that the competency of others who are not judges, but may have equally responsible positions, may be less than ideal as they age.

"Ginsburg's death opened a vacancy on the Supreme Court about six weeks before the presidential election, causing controversies over the nomination and confirmation of her successor. The issue of abortion became a focal point of the election campaign after Ginsburg's death."

How justices voted on Roe v. Wade

The Supreme Court issued a 6-3 ruling overturning Roe on June 24.
Alito wrote the court's opinion. Joining him were Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett.
Roberts voted with the majority but indicated he would've stopped short of fully overturning Roe.
The court's three liberal members — Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan — dissented.

It’s all hypothetical until all Candidates are known and US citizens start voting in the Primaries.

What is hypothetical in saying the majority of voters want neither Trump or Biden to stand? Seems straightforward enough to me. It’s no thank you.

I’m shocked that only 60% said Trump shouldn't run again.

I’m shocked that anyone wants Trump to run

Germanshepherdsmum, my first thought, on reading your post, was 'Ageist' - and I'm still thinking that.
