More tory trickery for the local elections?

Tories in Norwich have sent a leaflet to voters in Labour voting areas telling them that they don't need ID to vote.

(I hope the image is readable. If not try the twitter thread where it is reproduced)

That's a risky thing to do though, how do they ensure that they are only lying to non Tories .

Yes, Norwich is a pretty middle-class place. I'd have thought there'd be a lot of Tory supporters there.

Pretty sure not Tory trickery just someone has made an enormous cock up.
How would it help the Tory party

Siope Wed 26-Apr-23 10:53:13

rosie because young people and ethnic communities are least likely to have acceptable ID, and most likely not to vote Tory.

Although I think cock-up is more likely than conspiracy in this case. I assume that was in previous campaign literature and they didn’t bother to update or check it properly.

I wouldn’t want people with that lack of attention running my public services, though.

There was a threat on Mumsnet about people who were working as presiding officers and poll clerks in the coming elections. The discussion mentioned the possibility of explaining to people who turned up without photo ID that they could not vots. Another theme referred to photo ID where the holder no longer looked like their photo.

When I worked in local government I was a presiding officer for many years on the occasions when my library was used as a polling station. Occasionally there were "exchanges" with voters who had come to the wrong polling station and were suitably annoyed. I would not like to have to deal with angry voters who had no photo ID and were unaware of this requirement.

Usually on these occasions the police call in from time to time and are quickly available if needed.

Do we know how genuine this twitter post is. Is the leaflet old or has someone on the conservative party put out a cut a paste job using an old leaflet and forgot to update it.

Er. Look at the date of the election day. They got that correct...

I have been a polling clerk too, would not like to do it this time though.

But how do they determine the voting intentions of the people seeing it, and if Norwich is a middle income area, won't most people know they need ID.

Norwich is also a university town so that skews its politics to the left. There is also a big poster campaign saying that you need ID.

Strikes me as being a cock-up, as most supposed conspiracies are.

Evidently it was an error and has been admitted by the Tory party who sent out over 200 old leaflets. I’d of thought they’d been as likely to miss out on getting votes as any of the other parties, so double whammy!

growstuff Wed 26-Apr-23 12:18:18

The leaflet seems to be saying that if you have a postal vote pack, you can take that along on polling day and hand it in without needing voter ID. However, that's not made clear and the overriding message is that people don't need ID.

It seems like advertising a loophole to determined fraudsters. As a message to honest voters, it's misleading.

Or has Labour been up to its dirty tricks again. Court case, MP falsely claiming she lives where she doesn't, Starmers dirty tricks, Abbott getting her own back for losing the hip, rightly so. She should be sacked as well.
Huff Posts dirty tricks maybe. This will ,if true, stop anyone voting, Labour, Tory or the indifferent parties. So not sure I believe this.

No, the people who will tend not to have acceptable ID are young (maybe first-time voters) and people without stable accommodation, who are more likely not to vote Conservative.

Nice bit of whataboutery! What's that got to do with these leaflets?

Nothing really, just showing that Labour can have its very own dirty trickery. Sorry if I've offended you with a little bit of whataboutery. Common on some threads.

You haven't offended me in the slightest. I was amused at the distraction and lack of pertinent argument.

The implication was that the leaflets were handed out in the Labour voting Norwich South constituency. Which may or may not be true..

Jackiest Wed 26-Apr-23 13:27:32

Yes date is correct I should have spotted that so it is not an old one.

Here is a new item about it. So it seems the conservatives messed it up. Why should producing a leaflet be any different from the other things they have done.

Agree 😆 more likely scenario

growstuff Wed 26-Apr-23 13:37:00

Maybe the Conservatives could find somebody who can spell "businesses". grin

Oreo Wed 26-Apr-23 13:37:21

I don’t vote tory Callistemon but labour is just as likely to make that kind of booboo😁
There’s a lot of it about y’know

Callistemon21 Wed 26-Apr-23 13:39:05

I know, I usually vote for the third lot but it's often a wasted vote here, even though our Lib Dem candidate was definitely the best of the bunch.
