That Douglas Ross does my head in and the conservatives they’ll never get back in not in a million years

Aveline Wed 03-May-23 18:41:42

Phew!! SNP have found an accountancy firm willing to do their books - in Manchester 😑

ronib Wed 03-May-23 17:38:21

Callistemon21 flags for the coronation do you think?

Callistemon21 Wed 03-May-23 17:01:02

Why were there flags?

Mollygo Wed 03-May-23 15:32:53

Even more whataboutery.
Poster 1. I’ve just posted a fact, correctly referenced and using the right GN ^^.
Poster 2. Yes, but it’s the wrong fact. You found it in the wrong place and I disagree with it. I’ve got a much better one.

ronib Wed 03-May-23 15:30:33

The ferries are linked to the prop/photo that Douglas Ross waved around and so are part of the wider discussion. Therefore can be included?

Why do you feel the need to restrict the discussion?

Whataboutery Wed 03-May-23 15:17:59

Can I just post a template here that will be useful in all Scottish independence discussions on Gransnet?

Poster 1. Scottish independence is bad because...
Poster 2. Here are the established facts.
Poster 1. Ah but it's also bad because...
Poster 2. Here are some more established facts...

Poster 1. Have you ever considered...
Poster 2. Of course we have, we have thought this through you know.
Poster 1. Ferries! Ferries, ferries, ferries! What about the ferries?

I don't know. They're just called pipers up here. My Dad and brother were very good pipers.
It's a bit like saying horse riding instead of just riding.

I meant why are the flags out?

ronib Wed 03-May-23 10:58:34

Katek sorry… I was fixated on the word bagpipes! I realised afterwards….

Callistemon21 Wed 03-May-23 10:52:45

But why?

Katek Wed 03-May-23 10:50:56

Pipers please, not bagpipe players! grin

Donald greeted by two bagpipe players! Of course

Grantanow Mon 01-May-23 12:07:15

I see from the Telegraph that the Donald has landed at Aberdeen. Perhaps he has come to help the SNP between rounds of golf. He made some comment about it being great to be home.

Union of the Crown was in 1603 after the death of Elizabeth
1st, not 1606. In October 1604 James decreed that he would in future be known as King of Great Britain and not by the dividing names of England and Scotland. In Nov 1605 the gunpowder plot,. In 1606 James gave orders for a British flag to be created resulting in the Union Jack, Jack being a shortening of Jacobus, the Latin version of James.

ronib Sun 30-Apr-23 14:48:17

£77,091,574.71p without interest would be due to the English economy if debt repaid by Scotland on leaving the Union - taking inflation into account.

Oreo Sun 30-Apr-23 14:33:50

Am I being serious ? Hmmm, let me think while I have a burst on my bagpipes.

ronib Sun 30-Apr-23 14:17:21

Did you know that England paid £398k to Scotland as part of the Act of Union 1707 settlement to help ease the burden on the English?? economy.
What I wonder is if that payment is contingent on staying in the Union? Or can we have it repaid with interest and inflation?

volver3 Sun 30-Apr-23 13:51:01

Are you being serious?

You're telling us that a political party whose main raison d'etre is independence, are focussed on trying to bring about independence. And you think you've stumbled upon the truth of the ages so you'd better let everybody know?

Crikey.

Thanks Oreo. You’re still allowed an opinion on GN.🤗

And, of course, we are still awaiting a correct definition of the main purpose of the Scottish National Party, if it has changed recently, from those who are better informed than the rest of us elsewhere.
Please.

The SNP is the party of independence. We want Scotland to take her place as an equal, independent country. To be in the global family of nations, playing our part in building a better world." #SNP20

Did I say the comment was wrong?

Just wondering if the poster thought she was being clever and criticising, or maybe telling us all something we didn't know?

Well, the rest of us knew, but it seems that you don’t. Independence is their holy grail.

ronib Sun 30-Apr-23 11:07:59

Volver 3 did not mean you only to google bagpipes…. Clearly part of Scottish identity and culture and thought others needed to explore a bit if remotely interested. Possibly not by now.

Your comment on ex Bbc employees and anti Semitism and talking about bagpipes as a stereotype which was somehow bad seemed a bit adrift. Not worth worrying about really.

Mollygo somehow the Darien Scheme has not been included on any history syllabus in England. I wonder why?

Well, I learnt about it at school but it was in the dim and distant past.

Many places in former colonies have Scottish names, had Scottish governors, Scottish regiments were involved, so I think the Scots may have had some part in British Empire building.
🤔

Well, the tone of your reply and the hmm would indicate that it was.

So Oreo was correct then?

Yellow fever nothing to do with the English
