Apparently we are all supposed to stand up in front of our tellys and pledge allegiance to the King saying stuff like “ May the King live forever”
Will you me doing it? Me neither, I’ll be in the garden hopefully.
What does “pledge allegiance” even mean in the 21st century? Before royalist pile in, yes I do know it has its roots a few hundred years ago, and it’s taken from a Handel anthem , but , honestly , that’s no excuse is it? We’re not in the Brownies fgs.

My friend who posted on FB yesterday suggested the oil that they will be annointed with is BP.....after all its all about the money .
Duty ...its a word they fling about ,but when it involves a lifestyle most can only dream of and shaking hands, cutting ribbons and smiling its not exactly what the majority see as HARD work or work at all .
The RF have money spirited away in off shore accounts while "their" people struggle with a cost of living crisis ,and to compound it he's rubbing their noses in it with the huge cost of this coronation.
NO President in any country ...even Trump gets as much from the public purse ....for decades and unless we wisen up for the next hundred years with the heirs already lined up

I think he'll make a decent enough king but no way will I "pledge" for someone who will be anointed the supreme governor of the Church of England. Support all faiths or no faiths. Time for this historical connection to be broken.

Already sworn - just the two words

hmmm I wonder? Made me giggle.

I have no re-read the whole thread to count- but it seems that most of us will not be doing so.

So if Grans will not, by a big majority, I imagine that over the whole population, only a very small number will.

I don't think HM does believe himself to be a higher being, He's a human being like the rest of us with human frailties. Politicians now, some of them certainly consider themselves a cut above the rest of us, and they certainly commit adultery, but no one seems to mind that! HM and Camilla have been married for nearly 18 years without a breath of scandal, they certainly love each other and are good for each other. Sadly that was not the case with Diana which was tragic for both parties. Who would deny someone domestic happiness? I certainly wouldn't and neither do I believe would God

BigBertha1 Wed 03-May-23 07:25:04

I think my husband will but I would feel silly doing that and if he does I shall be embarrassed and giggle...time to make the coffee in that bit. We do support the monarchy but like religion we don't bother anyone else with it.

Nannan2 Wed 03-May-23 00:01:43

No.Just no.(whoever keeps thinking up these ideas must be losing their grasp on reality....)

HettyBetty Tue 02-May-23 22:33:21

Jaberwok I agree, many people have committed adultery (although not me) but they are not wanting to be held up as some sort of superior being, or have a ludicrously expensive ego party.

singingnutty Tue 02-May-23 22:00:49

I am sure we will have the telly on but certainly won’t be pledging allegiance. We shall be celebrating, however, because eldest DGS is 18 on that day and second youngest DGS is 8 on the Monday so the family will be here for buffet lunch, birthday cake and probably a few glasses of something.

FreedomAwaits Tue 02-May-23 21:31:10

Me too @eazybee. Can’t actually see what the harm is/ all the fuss is about.

Galaxy Tue 02-May-23 21:13:25

I am not indignant, I think it's hilarious, but I think that about most of the RF soap opera.

I think Princess Anne is right: the monarchy does bring continuity and therefore stability. However the Windsor family does shoot itself in the foot for being so rich in landed resources.

The Windsors need good salaries from the public purse but they should be stripped of the enormity of their inherited wealth as should other super-rich individuals. Land should be held by the citizens, for the citizens, and not for the benefit of any rich elite.

Good post Caleo.

Except that the theory might be interesting to think about but it never works in practice.

Of course I will pledge allegiance to the monarch, I am proud to be English and indeed also from Yorkshire.

Jaberwok Tue 02-May-23 20:31:44

Exactly Shizam , that's exactly what it is. Nothing to get upset about.

Shizam Tue 02-May-23 20:22:25

Russia got rid of their royal family. Look at how well that’s going with a republican head of state.
Assuming Charles doesn’t declare war on someone, think we are better with the devil we know.
And the daft oath of allegiance pledge was Canterbury bishop trying to be a bit modern. 🥹

Jaberwok Tue 02-May-23 19:58:18

Differences of opinion are one thing, accompanied by unpleasant comments are just that, unpleasant and often nasty.

Farzanah Tue 02-May-23 19:49:07

What a nasty and misleading thread…..

What is “misleading” about this thread? Just because posters may not agree doesn’t equate to “nastiness”.

Jaberwok Tue 02-May-23 19:42:06

Absolutely agree with you Poppyred. So unnecessary to be so unpleasant and childish. As for the pen incident, Charles had just lost both his parents. Those of us have lost much loved parents, his mother only the previous day, can well understand that having to perform in public would have been very difficult and a leaky pen could well have grated on already frayed nerves. The leaky pen should never have happened and I felt very sorry for the new King being subjected to an obvious oversight. Adulterer??! Oh for goodness sake, not that old chesnut again. Over half the population is guilty of that! As has been said, This is not a command, merely an invitation, so get over yourselves with the faux indignation.

JudyBloom Tue 02-May-23 19:29:06

Certainly not!

The serfs are being nicely distracted with circuses but no bread on offer, hence the hundreds of food banks in the country. 🎪🥖

Iam64 Tue 02-May-23 18:40:05

No I will not. I haven’t strong republican sympathies, don’t feel entirely confident we’d replace the monarch with anything reliable. I’m not pledging allegiance though, it’s 2023 not the 17th century

Sennelier1 Tue 02-May-23 18:34:24

No I will not pledge alliance. That date, day and time I,will most probably be laying in the floor with my grandchildren visiting from abroad. I might even miss the whole coronation.
