Apparently we are all supposed to stand up in front of our tellys and pledge allegiance to the King saying stuff like “ May the King live forever”
Will you me doing it? Me neither, I’ll be in the garden hopefully.
What does “pledge allegiance” even mean in the 21st century? Before royalist pile in, yes I do know it has its roots a few hundred years ago, and it’s taken from a Handel anthem , but , honestly , that’s no excuse is it? We’re not in the Brownies fgs.

No

Wyllow3 Sun 30-Apr-23 07:36:57

No!

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 30-Apr-23 07:40:09

Definitely not. I might wash my hair. There’s going to be a lot of clean hair that day! I thought the King wanted to modernise but anyway. This allegiance thing used to be done by the peers - but most of them aren’t being invited! It all sounds a bit of a muddle.

karmalady Sun 30-Apr-23 07:40:34

I am a royalist but no, no pledge from me. Any allegiance from me is only to me and mine and I don`t need to make a pledge on that

Here are the lyrics of Zadok the Priest:-

Zadok the priest
And Nathan the prophet
Anointed Solomon king
And all the people
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced
And all the people
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced
And all the people
Rejoiced, rejoiced, rejoiced and said

God save the king
Long live the king
God save the king
May the king live forever
Amen, amen, alleluia, alleluia, amen, amen
Amen, amen, alleluia, amen……..

There’s more but mostly repetition of the last five lines. I first sang this as a child in my church choir.

No

This "modernisation" thing isn't going the way they hoped, is it?

Witzend Sun 30-Apr-23 07:55:21

It sounds a very American sort of thing - pledging allegiance to the flag….
I’m not anti the monarchy, but no, I certainly won’t.

Galaxy Sun 30-Apr-23 07:59:42

No.

NanaDana Sun 30-Apr-23 08:02:27

As a Republican I'll be watching some of the Coronation ceremony purely out of interest in social history, but I feel no allegiance whatsoever to Charles or to any other Royal. The whole concept is a total anachronism, and should be at the very least scaled down to the point where it is no more than a tourist attraction. The Civil List should be abolished, and the so=called Monarchy should play no part whatsoever, even in a ritual sense, in the Government of our Nation. I could say much more about the "worthiness" of the Royal couple, but I'll leave it there. So it's a "No" from me.

BlueBelle Sun 30-Apr-23 08:08:46

No of course not my only allegiance is to my family
I have no problem with Charles or Camilla just don’t play into any of this rich royal rubbish

eazybee Sun 30-Apr-23 08:09:12

This thread is sooo predictable.
I shall.

kittylester Sun 30-Apr-23 08:11:01

I am looking forward to the whole ritual and spectacle but this seems to be so 'tone deaf'. I won't be swearing allegiance.

Franbern Sun 30-Apr-23 08:25:47

Oh dear !! What a silly idea. What royal adviser idiot came up with this? Obviously, not one with any sort of 'finger on the pulse. Perhaps they should start to realise how an increasing number of the population are not royalist, and also how the last census showed the very large numbers of people who do not have any believes in any god.

Anniebach Sun 30-Apr-23 08:26:35

‘All who so desire in the Abbey and elsewhere’

This is not asking all to stand in front of their television

Blinko Sun 30-Apr-23 08:27:28

I'm disappointed that we will not be seeing a scaled down version. It's still full of the old nonsense, anointing behind a specially made screen, trumpeters, gold coaches, all that parading in livery - for goodness sake!

nanaK54 Sun 30-Apr-23 08:31:37

It's a no from me!

Pooter Sun 30-Apr-23 08:34:23

As an idea it's up there with bringing back standing for the national anthem at the end of the film in the cinema.

grandMattie Sun 30-Apr-23 08:34:28

eazybee

This thread is sooo predictable.
I shall.

I agree. I most likely shall.
I believe, despite all efforts, that the monarchy brings stability rather than the rocky route of republics…. Imagine President Boris!

Gala Sun 30-Apr-23 08:34:32

The "allegiance" is apparently the peers bit, now you can all join in - if you want. Its not compulsory, just part of Charles' inclusivity (not modernisation) along with using the UK languages of Welsh, Irish Gaelic & Scottish Gaelic, representatives of major faiths (& minor ones for all I know) participation of women bishops etc etc . Can't understand why people get so exercised over something they say they're not going to watch or celebrate. Go about your day. Enjoy.

vegansrock Sun 30-Apr-23 08:34:41

anniebach we are invited to join a “chorus of millions” , yes they are asking for public participation, this was from Lambeth Palace who want it to be “ around the world”, “whether at home or outside” BBC website. So they are calling for public participation. Fat chance I say !

Shanie Sun 30-Apr-23 08:35:18

No thanks.

vegansrock Sun 30-Apr-23 08:35:43

grandMattie imagine King Andrew and Queen Sarah!

wendyann23 Sun 30-Apr-23 08:36:53

No. I am a royalist but this is a step too far.
