Will You Pledge Allegiance?

Apparently we are all supposed to stand up in front of our tellys and pledge allegiance to the King saying stuff like “ May the King live forever”
Will you me doing it? Me neither, I’ll be in the garden hopefully.
What does “pledge allegiance” even mean in the 21st century? Before royalist pile in, yes I do know it has its roots a few hundred years ago, and it’s taken from a Handel anthem , but , honestly , that’s no excuse is it? We’re not in the Brownies fgs.

I quite like democracy.

Its doesn't always give us the best person for the job but we get the chance to try again in 5 years. Whereas with the inherited monarchy...

Dignified as in having a parliamentary Republic not running the country but upholding the laws our constitution
And the guarantee of that happening is . . .
The behaviour of some of the people running our country in the last 50 years has not been at all dignified. I believe they were elected by the GBP.

Calistemon. Dignified as in having a parliamentary Republic not running the country but upholding the laws our constitution. Rather than a hereditary HoS who we are asked to pledge allegiance to. It should be the other way around he should pledge allegiance to the people. What is dignified about Charles who friends were Savile and Peter Ball receiving bags of cash and cash for honours.

This idea is not going down well

A more dignified and principled alternative to the monarchy is a parliamentary republic. It’s tried and tested and allows us to choose our own head of state. Not someone running the country, but representing us all and guarding the constitution. It’s time to #AbolishTheMonarchy

Quelle surprise Grany !

“I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.”

⬆︎is the swearing.

The most pertinent words are "according to law".

Parliament makes the laws in the UK, not the monarch, and if the monarchy ever got troublesome Parliament would change the law as it pertains to this king or any other.

As it did in the past. I seem to remember from history lessons that previous Charleses got sorted out good and proper for being troublesome and overweening.

Or, as minibaggs said, it basically means you promise not to join ¡s¡s (i.e. be a traitor to your country).

So, all in all, it's not a big deal.

I definitely won’t be. I will watch the highlights. If we are at home it will be on tv but I’m not interested in watching every minute. I do wish the King and Queen Camilla well. The monarchy lost its lustre for me a little when the Queen died. I agree it’s a huge moment in our history but won’t be pledging allegiance.

Wyllow3 Mon 01-May-23 09:06:04

I'd feel a wee bit happier if Charles was going to do what he originally said - swear to protect all faiths, full on, in the ceremony, but he's dropped that no doubt under pressure from powers that be.

I really wish it were all more simple and the money spent go to food banks.

I was originally a 100% republican but came to respect the Queen greatly, a genuine life of service, and the role of the monarchy -providing you have a decent monarch - in the balance of powers: I still hope that in matters like climate change Charles will use his convictions to the good.

I will not. I swore an oath to the late Queen when I joined the Services, and was proud to honour that oath, but it died with her. I have to wonder how much the King is letting himself be led through the nose in all this, especially by Lambeth Palace who must be rubbing their hands with glee.

Are you sure? I had to swear an Oath of Allegiance to the Queen AND her descendants- that was very clear.

No.

nadateturbe Mon 01-May-23 00:12:59

Yes, we enjoyed it. Quite funny. Loved Beatrice and Eugenie.
Frankie Boyle was more interesting though.

Putin would agree with you *Grany"

Doesn't mean Grany is wrong.

I'm trying to think of someone who is dignified who might want the job

Um...........

First I've heard about it and doubt it's true, I mean whose going to know?

Precisely!

Urban myth probably

Chrissielou Sun 30-Apr-23 22:32:42

A very loud NO from me.

HettyBetty Sun 30-Apr-23 21:51:30

Hmm, very interesting and telling response from GNHQ.....

Caramme Sun 30-Apr-23 21:23:44

Exactly my thoughts, NanaDana.

NanaDana Sun 30-Apr-23 21:20:25

It gets better... at least in terms of what a bizarre concept it is. Can you believe that it's actually being officially referred to as "the homage of the people". Homage? Positively mediaeval. What are we? Serfs? And this is an example of Charles and Co. modernising the monarchy. I think not. What a horrendous own goal.

"May he live forever"
That sound more like a curse than a blessing.

maddyone Sun 30-Apr-23 18:58:16

No, I won’t be standing (or sitting) and pledging my allegiance to the King. Absolutely not!
I will be preparing a coronation lunch for the family though, on the Sunday. I want my grandson to understand that this is a historic occasion. Whether we agree with the monarchy or not, it is part of history. I’d be happy if this was the last coronation though, but I doubt it will be.

HettyBetty Sun 30-Apr-23 18:52:33

Oh, and I don't believe in any god so GSTK is irrelevant to me.

lixy Sun 30-Apr-23 18:50:53

Family lunch today - no-one was in favour of this across all four generations! So I guess that's a 'no' from us.

I didn't promise to obey my lovely DH of nearly 50 years and I certainly will not be pledging allegiance to anyone one who spends billions on pomp and circumstance for themselves and their former mistress in today's current economic climate.
Let those that want to do it.
