The police has apologised over the arrest of the republican group

The Met has sent a letter of “regret” over the arrest of over 60+ people on Saturday.

As I said in another thread.

The police acted like idiots.

However, I am more interested in what prompted the police action, as nothing in the run up to the coronation where, both parties were actively cooperating, suggested that this would happen.

As I said - Braverman’s hand is all over this.

Thanks for that verification Casdon. I said way back in the thread that these protesters were carrying paint, rape alarms, and glue. They did not intend to merely heckle and carry a few placards. I hate to think about their true intentions because missiles such as paint being hurled or rape alarms going off would have resulted in serious injuries to many in the crowds or to the participants in the procession, because the horses would have been spooked and terrified. I can only conclude that injury and death is what they wanted and that is evil.

There was more than one group of protestors, maddyone.

Where are you getting the idea from that the people carrying paint were anything to do with Republic?

Or the idea that Republic protestors were carrying rape alarms when the people who were carrying rape alarms were a group of three charity workers on a scheme approved by the police, who were trained by the police and whose rape alarms were supplied by the Home Office?

Or even, that all the protestors along the route were part of Republic?

It's like Chinese Whispers on here today.

Is this a thread about some people who were arrested at the coronation, or a thread about the poor and disadvantaged who are assumed to dislike the royal family because they’ve got more money than them?
Depends who you’re asking, but for this post, the second.
My DGD enjoyed the coronation, recognises that her taxes might have contributed, but is far more interested in all the local second home owners who make it impossible to buy a house where she works.

maddyone Tue 09-May-23 17:48:46

I haven’t said a single word about who will be at the next coronation. Not a single word. You fp were making assumptions about ‘the poor.’ It’s never a good idea to assume you know what an entire group of people think, or will think.

People’s right to protest peacefully has not been removed. And as I have already said, the new legislation was not relied upon . It was abundantly clear from the television coverage that plenty of protesters remained.

I am trying to get my head around this.
What did you mean by "the new legislation was not relied upon."

Parts of the new Act was used it seems, according to the link from Casdon.

I remember having socialist views until I got my first pay packet. My son was the same.

Katie, only just over 30% of young people are in favour ofMonarchy. So by the time of the next Coronation, what % will it be?

I can fully understand that young people feel that this huge display of pomp at such huge cost, was a slap in the face of all those struggling with the cost of living, à la 'let them eat Cakism'.

Is this a thread about some people who were arrested at the coronation, or a thread about the poor and disadvantaged who are assumed to dislike the royal family because they’ve got more money than them?

PS I worked in a poor area for many years and all royal events were celebrated with gusto. It seems to me that some middle class people on here think they know what poor and disadvantaged people think. They don’t! The protesters were far more likely to be middle class/educated/retired than people from poor areas.

Fully aware of this- for older people, and some in the middle. My post is about young people- up to the age of 25, of all 'classes'. Whether you agree or not, they will be the ones who will matter at the next Coronation- not you or I, or our generation.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 09-May-23 17:30:21

The difference between us, HPQ, is that I have always read the law (statute or common) rather than rely on the explanatory commentary. Yes, I’m sure you had a well thumbed copy of the Yellow Book to hand even though a practice manager. If only I had needed just the one, regularly updated, book. Criminal law was an area on which I was examined in order to qualify, along with a good many others.

So according to your latest post HPQ, the republican protestors carrying the rape alarms were all members of the Westminster Night Team. Do they work during the day too?

That assertion is clearly rubbish isn’t it Mollygo?

Good link Casdon. Havent got time to read it all now.

Seems part of the new Act was indeed used.

Oh, and the group is run by Westminster Council, that well known group of loonie lefties.

Yes, Labour is in overall control of Westminster Council

31 Labour Councillors

23 Conservative Councillors

HousePlantQueen Tue 09-May-23 16:51:48

GSM, I make the comments I have because I am uncomfortable with the way this country is headed with the current Tory administration. I am perfectly free to do so, despite your unnecessarily rude comments about my not having understood the Act. If you are happy to sit back and watch this, that is down to you. I am not. I am a retired Practice Manager with a good knowledge of taxation law as it existed during my working career, you are a retired property lawyer, neither of us are barristers working in criminal law, so my opinion, like everyone else's is just as valid as yours.

Doesn’t mean anything, most youngsters are socialist - until they learn the real world does not revolve around the teachings of Karl Marx

They will be the ones at the next Coronation, and probably in greater number. So can't see how it is irrelevant. Most of us will be gone, by then ... just before of after Charles- as many of us are about the same age.

Sorry Katie, but what absolute tosh and nonsense.

Caroline Lucas says it well- and his reply is well... as above

It’s abundantly clear that you either haven’t read the Act or haven’t understood it. If you had you wouldn’t make the comments that you have. And no, I place no reliance on biased commentary.

I will have a look and let you know, but, extraordinary as it may be to some, there are people who give up occasional evenings, their spare time, to volunteer for the benefit of others. We have a similar team in the city near here, good people who make sure that girls and women are safe when out and about at night. Even more extraordinary is the fact that these volunteers are employed! Not on benefits, would you believe it!

but it is also important to see how some Police chose to interpret it- or mis-interpret it- leading to apologies.

I am all in favour of apologies when you've done something wrong. But I would never be in favour of 'let's do it, we can just apologise later' - be it on a personal basis, or an official one.

HousePlantQueen Tue 09-May-23 16:32:49

I read, I research the same way as you do. You were, I believe, one of those rehashing the popular press line about the rape alarms; the ones carried, legally by the Westminster Night Team, as approved and supported by the Metropolitan Police, so maybe you too, should take care you are 'not informed by biased commentary'

fancythat Tue 09-May-23 16:32:32

What is the difference between the new Act and the old Act?

Why did the Police supposedly use the old Act and not the new one?

Do the foot Police know what is in the new one? Or dont they have to, only the higher ups?

What is the legislation, old or new, that means someone can get arrested as they might get up to something dodgy?

I dont expect most people to know the answers.
But I do have questions about what happened, and why, and would it again, and in what circumstances etc.
