Labour will be a major reforming government

According to the headline report in the guardian today.

Starmer “if you think that our job in 1997 was to rebuild a crumbling realm, that in 1964 it was to modernise an economy overly dependent on the kindness of strangers, in 1945 to build a new Britain, in a volatile world, out if the trauma of collective sacrifice, in 2024 it will have to be all three”

Starmer then went on to pad out some of the policies he intends to introduce, including investment in a green agenda, expansion of NHS staff, votes at 16, fundamental reform of workers rights, recognise people’s need for stability, order, security.
“We must understand that there are precious things-in our way of life, in our environment, and our communities - we must protect, preserve and pass on to future generations.

The Tories do nothing to protect our rivers and seas, our NHS, or families or nation”

Islington N 98%-2% to keep Jeremy Corbyn as their MP. They demand the right to choose their MP. Not to have one parachuted in. Starmer asking councilors to canvas as no one wants to door knock for Starmer

Obsession with posh voices and accents

Surely those in the Red Wall constituencies who voted for Brexit were somehow convinced by Johnson's accent that he
"would see them right" and "he's one of us"

Both phrases heard on a news programme interview with a group of 4 or 5 middle aged men, sharing a bedsit and working on zero hours contracts. They worked different hours during the day and night so that they each had a chance to sleep on the only bed.

Various thoughts went through my head - feeling sorry for them that they were in such dire straits and also thinking what f.................. idiots they were.

Didn't Boris Johnson also say something about business?

Yes but he said it in a posh voice so that’s ok….

Oh. Talking of loudmouths and foul language

Boris slammed Macron as ‘Putin’s lickspittle’ and threatened to 'punch his lights out'

Oh and he also called him a c***...

Did anyone see Kwarteng being interviewed on Ch4 News tonight? Absolutely no remorse about the way he trashed the economy and caused so many problems. I wish they’d had someone there who had been affected by his catastrophic budget. An estate agent friend of ours says he’s still picking up the pieces. And Truss is travelling round the world giving lectures ( why isn’t she in her constituency doing her proper job?). Johnson has just bought a multi million pound property in Oxfordshire.

I’m not excusing the Tories. I just want to know whether Gloriana would cool people scum mean it as a slang term, or whether she’d object to being called scum
, or just dismiss it a slang term aimed at her in whatever context it was used. But as usual, she avoids answering the question.

MaizieD Wed 17-May-23 22:30:34

I'm a bit hmm about these innocent neighbours.

The tories aren't in the slightest bit innocent. There is no comparison...

Siope Wed 17-May-23 22:02:05

I’ve been called scum, to my face, for living off-grid.

I didn’t think the bloke who said that was foul-mouthed. It’s not even a swear word. I do think he was a judgemental pillock, who knew nowt about my life and choices.

However, echoing Glorianny, if he knew I was choosing to let children go hungry, and sending old people off to die in care homes, he still wouldn’t have been foul-mouthed, but justified, and correct in his assessment.

volver3 Wed 17-May-23 21:53:43

I know many, many words more foul than "scum."

😉

“But if someone called you or your innocent neighbours scum Glorianny, would you think they were being offensive or even foul mouthed? Or would you think it a suitable epithet?”
So if someone referred to you as scum, whether you deserve it or not, would you consider the user foul mouthed?

You do have a bit of an obsession with me and my neighbours Mollygo
I've already said "scum" is slang, not foul language

I think this wins the "post of the day" award.

Someone could I suppose, but as far as I know neither me, nor my neighbours, have wrecked the NHS, made thousands homeless, thousands more reliant on foodbanks and making the choice heat or eat, whilst they were busy lining their own pockets and stuffing their mates full of cash. Had we done so then "scum" would seem a fairly insipid description.

So, am I right in thinking that people think that what Raynor said is far far worse than the things that Johnson and Rees Mogg did? Because I don’t remember people at the time saying ‘ I’m never going to vote Conservative again because Johnson lied or Rees Mogg tried to stop a bill going through to protect vulnerable women’. Imo the electorate in this country have strange priorities. Or maybe what Raynor said was more newsworthy…which says a lot about our press. Did she vote against free school meals for children. Of course she didn’t. She just used a bad word which is obviously far far worse.

It can all be wrong, including Raynor being foul mouthed, which I have heard she is on plenty of occasions, and any lies or actions and words by JRM or Boris. It’s not either/or.
I want the Labour Deputy to speak properly, I don’t mind any accents, we all have one of those.

So can you explain to me exactly what is foul-mouthed about the word "scum"? It is slang certainly but many accents and dialects use slang words.
Using the accent and voice you grew up with can't be acceptable just for the wealthy, working class or regional voices are just as acceptable, and that includes slang.

It's obviously OK to lie and filibuster providing you do so politely and with a posh accent.
Sorry. Can’t agree with you there. Lying and/or filibustering isn’t acceptable whatever your accent, qualification etc.

Glorianny Wed 17-May-23 10:26:51

It's obviously OK to lie and filibuster providing you do so politely and with a posh accent. Speaking like a Northerner and using words like "scum" is completely unacceptable.
Remind me what century are we in????

Boris Johnson lied in parliament about Starmers role in the Jimmy Saville case and was made to withdraw his remark. That to me is far far worse. And Rees Mogg filibustered to stop a law to protect vulnerable women being passed. But, hey they did it using long words in a posh accent so that’s ok. And most people don’t know about it and, if they did have conveniently forgotten about it.

Not half as excruciating as AR would be. Imagine her alongside eloquent, chic ladies such as Ursula von der Leyen, Mme Macron, Dr Biden …. She’s a foul-mouthed embarrassment.

Much as I respect those ladies I doubt if they would have achieved what they have done if they’d started from the sort of background that Angela did. She also has a disabled child I believe.

She called Tories “scum”. I am so disappointed in the Labour party for resorting to calling others vile names. This must be a recent thing because my late Father voted Labour all his life and would never have supported a party that spoke like this of others.

Nye Bevan famously referred to Tries as being "lower than vermin". Angela Rayner was following a long Labour tradition.

Emily Thornberry didn't make any 'white van man' remarks. It's a figment of your tory imagination.

And I have a feeling that Ursula von der Leyen, Mme Macron and Dr Biden aren't arrant snobs...

She resigned over it and admitted she should not have said what she did!!
