It's beautiful here, loving getting the garden furniture out

Joseann Wed 24-May-23 16:37:42

Brilliant sunshine in Padstow today even on my plate at lunch.

I thought that it was usually the fault of the mother in law

Oh yes, The Dragon 😁

VioletSky Wed 24-May-23 16:08:58

My latest employment review was exemplary btw

VioletSky Wed 24-May-23 16:07:06

Why should I?

I'm not interested in people spending their entire day arguing over what word I used

I'm interested in the woman blaming by other women that goes on

And spending your entire day harassing me about a word choice kinda proves my point doesn't it? lol

Maybe go enjoy some sunshine instead?

Look at the rape thread, you will find victim blaming
But I don't want to. It has no revelation to what is being discussed here for me.

..and (while we're banging our collective heads against the brick wall that is VioletSky's refusal to acknowledge that she might be wrong about her use of 'phenomena' in this instance) may I chip in the suggestion that Joseann probably meant to write 'relevance' instead of 'revelation' here? Also (on the topic of executing witches), isn't the rule that pictures are 'hung'; people are 'hanged'.

Fully acknowledge my error, (my phone doing predictive text). Apologies.
At least I know that revelation and relevance are both singular nouns! 😆
Mistakes don't really bother me, but always being right does!

Doo doo do do doo!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Thank you. I now have that tune stuck in my head!

Me too!

"A phenomena" is one of the things that make my teeth curl.

So is "a bacteria".....

Why does it matter to you so much GSM?

So much that you brought my job into it?

Although I'm teaching basic phonics not A level English

I mean, it's interesting how far people will go sometimes

But when I wrote the comment I was thinking of the many ways women get blamed... Plural and I explained that so...

I stand by what I said. Back to work now though so you all will be arguing into a void I'm afraid

It isn’t an argument!

FannyCornforth Wed 24-May-23 13:48:45

Your school isn’t big on Lifelong Learning then, VS?

Everywhere that I’ve worked it has been in the job description and it also comes up in performance management

What and who you teach is irrelevant

If someone corrects you, and it’s apparent that they know what they are talking about, you should treat it as a learning opportunity

It's a phenomena

Women get so much blame and shame, especially from other women

In case I am accused of misinterpreting the sentence being quoted

Foxygloves Wed 24-May-23 13:36:32

It's a phenomena

How in the name of the wee donkey can somebody (who may only be majoring in phonics or not) pretend that they were using this as a plural ?
Would anybody say
A dogs are for a walk
I saw a geese
I’ve got a mice
I need to buy a new shoes - or what?
“A” is the indefinite article and can only be used in the singular and it is is also singular
(from the Ladybird guide to simple grammar)

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-May-23 13:30:17

I simply thought it a strange lack of understanding for one involved in education.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-May-23 13:17:12

🙄 Doesn’t work like that. It’s one, as you said. A phenomenon, one of many phenomena.

VioletSky Wed 24-May-23 13:15:00

I'm using it as plural

Because it's one of many

Smileless2012 Wed 24-May-23 12:43:58

Women get so much blame and shame, especially from other women and so often on GN mother's, m'.i.l. and GM's.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-May-23 12:43:30

It seems to be an example of posting to wind people up which VS said she did.

Foxygloves Wed 24-May-23 12:31:52

Don’t fret FannyCornforth if a person says black is white often enough they clearly think they can make it so.
And let’s not get anybody started on criterion -and criteria gringrin

FannyCornforth Wed 24-May-23 12:19:39

VS It isn’t!
Phenomena - plural
Phenomenon - singular

You don’t say ‘a phenomena’ (which you have literally just typed)
It’s grammatically incorrect

Are you having us on?

VioletSky Wed 24-May-23 11:58:38

Smileless2012 Wed 24-May-23 10:41:59

M.i.l., mother and/or GM FannyCornforth. Woe betide the poster who dares to complain about or criticise her d.i.l. or D.

FannyCornforth Wed 24-May-23 10:37:57

Oh Molly! I thought that was me sad

FannyCornforth Wed 24-May-23 10:37:21

Glorianny

Funny on these threads how when you raise a subject that makes people feel uncomfortable they immediately cry "deviation" or resort to criticising grammar.

This from the deviation expert!🤣🤣🤣
