Braverman attempts a cover up.

She asked her civil servants to try two things after speeding

1. to arrange a completely safety private course to avoid being reported

2. then she asked to be entered for a course anonymously.

They refused as it was not in their remit.

So she took the points.

This was reported widely as in including the Guardian and the Mail, but its become an issue for two reasons

the attempted cover up
and asking civil servants to collude with the cover up.

Its the second which in my mind is possibly the most reprehensible.

Both speak to her character however - "I am different, I am better, I can be above the law. (and I want to hide my wrong-doings)

Hopefully, another nail in the coffin, tho unlikely to be a sackable offence?

As I understand it, she asked a civil servant a question - and someone clearly wants her hung, drawn and quartered for it. This happened last year, she wasn't even Home Secretary at the time, the timing of this leak is extremely suspicious. If they were so concerned then why was the issue not raised when it actually happened? The knives are out for Braverman, just like they were for Raab. She made no attempt to avoid the penalty, as I understand it courses are potentially offered to people who have only broken the speed limit by a small amount - if it was anything more serious she would have been in court. Some celeb lawyer says he has arranged private courses for his well known clients, so its not unheard of. David Baddiel did the group Zoom course and was recognised by another participant - he tweeted about it yesterday - so clearly she was concerned about being recognised. When a private course was not possible, she paid the fine and took the 3 points.

No idea where you get the idea from that she asked civil servants to collude in a cover up - haven't heard a thing about that anywhere, and this has been all over the news for the last two days. What a waste of time - with everything going on in the country, and elsewhere, this is complete trivia!

This is the best common sense post on the thread.👏🏻👏🏻

If you’re still reading JaneJudge no, you aren’t alone. I find the casual acceptance of speeding on this thread very disturbing.

SB has shown time and time again that her top priority is to promote herself and her political ambitions. Her second priority is to protect the Tory party. nothing to do with doing the best for our country.

I don't think many are interested Dinahmo - I posted the same info (pretty much) with a link, this morning.

I know. I just thought I'd remind them. I just don't get - some people still coming up with excuses.

That's how people like her stay in office.

I agree Eloethan.

Honestly guys! Can you imagine how many famous people get speeding tickets and we never see them on Zoom courses or live courses. Of course Suella asked if she could do the course privately. And she is very very busy - trying her best for OUR country. I can’t believe how much attention this is getting when there are so so many more important issues.

Of course there are more important matters, but you seem to be missing the point. Why should she be entitled to do the course privately? Why should she have used tax-payer funded staff to enquire. She should have done what everybody else does, which is to find out in her own time.

She's not the only person in the country who is busy. And as for doing the best for the country ... are you sure we're talking about the same person?

I don't like SB one little bit but initially I thought perhaps her request was due to the pressures of work - though I think it is pretty shameless of her to try to use her position to seek different treatment.

Even if her actions had been for purely practical reasons, it is fairly certain that, were she to undertake a normal online course, other course members would likely have identified her. This would risk attracting adverse publicity. So obviously people will question her motives.

Really, even if she had made the approach for purely practical reasons, I think it shows both a lack of judgment and integrity. Other drivers would not have the means, nor the right, to make such a request. It smacks very much of a sense of entitlement and a disregard for the notion of fairness.

I saw it somewhere this morning. Is it worth commenting on? Just more depressing confirmation that our government is rotten.

I see that the net immigration figures are set to be as high as 700,000. The failing Home Secretary has rushed out a policy preventing overseas students bringing their families unless they are research students.
Well that should reduce the numbers 😄.

Braverman is all mouth and no effectiveness.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 23-May-23 17:20:51

They are now pushing the Rwanda connection.

I reckon she’s toast.

growstuff Tue 23-May-23 17:05:10

Am I the only one who thinks that Braverman's National Conservative speech was the catalyst for this.

Just to remind people of the criticism at the time:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/may/15/tory-mps-accuse-suella-braverman-of-undermining-sunak-authority#:~:text=Tory%20MPs%20accuse%20Suella%20Braverman%20of%20making%20bid%20for%20party%20leadership,-Party%20colleagues%20condemn&text=Despairing%20Conservative%20MPs%20have%20accused,railing%20against%20experts%20and%20elites.

I don't know who the senior Conservatives were, although I could probably have a guess. She's not popular with back bench MPs, who think she's gone too far. Jeremy Hunt and even Priti Patel have criticised her on recent weeks.

Being a fly on the HoP's walls would be interesting.

growstuff Tue 23-May-23 16:56:16

It depends what she asked civil servants to do. Strictly speaking she should never have used them in this way anyway.

Many people took online courses during Covid and perhaps she thought this was still possible. To put it mildly I'm not a fan of hers (in fact I believe she has made too many mistakes to be allowed to keep her job) but I don't agree with hounding her in this case.

It is still possible.

Absolutely. I can't honestly see what all the fuss is about. She was speeding. She tried to arrange the course in a way which suited her, but who wouldn't, given the chance? She's paid the fine, taken the points and that should be it. Maybe a bit of a telling-off by Rishi Sunak, but that's all that should be necessary. We're not talking about invading a country on the basis of a lie, or even asking someone else to say they were driving - both of which has happened before, albeit by the 'other side.'

Ww2 not necessarily the Tory party leaking although I can see why they might. How did the Tory party gain access to this info in the first place?

Does the Home Office have secure computer systems? How easy is it to hack into? …..

You might be better hiring a private detective than asking on GN.

Not a fan of SB.

Not a fan of speeding.

Not hugely moved that she wanted to do the course anonymously - it's not as though she tried to duck out of the penalty.

Not a fan of the constant trial by media that dominates our culture.

Absolutely my feelings.

It is the Tory party doing the leaks, not the civil service. A good majority of the MPs now see her as a liability and I expect that unless she shuts up or resigns there will be more leaks.

Do buck up.

Dinahmo Tue 23-May-23 16:16:59

For those of you who have been defending SB have you forgotten her previous misdemeanors?

The following is from the Independant

"Suella Braverman is facing fresh allegations of ministerial code breaches over her failure to formally disclose years of previous work with the Rwandan government.

The home secretary co-founded a charity called the Africa Justice Foundation with Cherie Blair, which trained Rwandan government lawyers between 2010 and 2015.

Several people the charity worked with are now key members of President Paul Kagame’s government and are involved in the UK’s £140m deal to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Ms Braverman did not officially disclose her previous links to the country when appointed home secretary in 2022, despite the deal being a lynchpin of the government’s migration policy and ongoing legal challenges alleging politically-driven human rights violations including torture, murder and kidnappings."

I'm reminded of a friend whose company hire a Nigerian lady to do their books. They eventually realised that money was missing and when she was challenged her response was that it was common in her country and she thought that everybody did in England. She could see noting wrong with her behaviour.

I'm not saying that SB has been cooking the books but she does seem to have the attitude that her action are perfectly reasonable.

this gov't don't believe rules apply to them do they?
