Boris Johnson steps down as MP with immediate effect www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-65863267

I wonder if he’s eloped with Nadine.

I've just realised I am now unrepresented in Parliament. I wonder if i will make any difference?

Wyllow3 Sat 10-Jun-23 16:47:18

We certainly live in interesting times. I think it's the end of this period of Conservative rule, and probably sooner than full term.
I agree with you Whitewavemark.

The dangers of a Trump style populist (narcissist) leader style of politics is immense.

People criticise Starmer for being "boring". "Lacking charisma" Give me boring with integrity anyday.

Apparently Trump and Johnson had dinner together last week.

I wonder if Trump helped him write his resignation letter and told him to use one of his own favourite excuses when he’s been found out...witch hunt.

Someone has applied to the Electoral Commission to register a 'National Conservative Party.'

Listening to Stewart and Campbell - some thoughts that he intends Sunak to lose the election and Johnson will then come back as leader of the opposition - not sure how, unless he grabs Dorries seat? Sunak would be mad to accept that!

I do think that they are right when they argue that Johnson is intent on splitting the Tory party apart. There is a right wing faction led by Johnson, that has no care for the U.K. - the only care they have is for themselves.

Oh, have they done an emergency podcast? I must listen to it. I checked last night but it was probably a bit too early!

A Johnson ally has quit as well.

I wonder what is going on here with Johnson and his groupies - whether they are trying to orchestrate another mass resigning thing to oust Sunak.

Or, whether they are just rats deserting a rapidly sinking ship.

Are they trying to push Subak towards a hasty election? A punishment for his perceived temerity, perhaps?

Anyone know whether the Privileges Committee recommendations would go before the Commons if Johnson was elected in a different seat?

I assume they would, but given a safe enough seat, he could ride that out.

I wondered about that. I would have thought it would go into abeyance and a vote be taken by Parliament, whose rules he has been found to have broken if/when he returns.

Committees’ report will be published for all to see on Monday.

Be able to see who voted for what.

You can imagine the conversation can’t you😄😄😄

The parallel between them is remarkable.

Andy Burnham is a good mayor. He stood twice as leader. Lost to Corbyn sadly.
If he chose to return to Parliament, I hope it would be in a northern seat. He gets the issues here

Wheniwasyourage Sat 10-Jun-23 14:24:41

And he seems to be good at it, from what I can gather (that's Andy Burnham, not Boris Johnson grin). What is more, as an aside, there was a picture of him visiting the factory where new buses are being made for Manchester, and he was driving a bus (in the grounds of the factory, it seemed) without the need to put on a bus driver's hat or hi-vis jacket to make him 'look the part' as so many politicians feel they must.

Another interesting article from last year. The sadness expressed by Johnson's relative is almost palpable.

Just thought of a couple of possibilities for Johnson’s seat - Andy Burnham or David Milliband.

Burnham would not quit as Mayor of Manchester.
He adores that role.

He doesn’t do work. Doesn’t do detail.

No. His never- to-be- finished book on Shakespeare is evidence of that.
Several real Shakespearean historians of note have been contacted by Johnson to ‘help’ him to finish it.
He’s also had a massive advance for it.
I did a spot of research into it some months ago when we were discussing Johnson’s attitude to money versus his work ethic.

In searching for that quote, I found this interesting article

FannyCornforth Sat 10-Jun-23 13:31:34

I’m not sure about his political return.

Someone (I wish I could remember who) said that Johnson always wanted to be Prime Minister; always wanted to have been Prime Minister; but wasn’t so keen on doing the stuff in the middle.

MayBee70 Sat 10-Jun-23 13:25:55

How can people say it is a witch hunt when even just one of his proven transgressions would have ended the career of any other politician?Arcuri? Illegally trying to prorogue parliament? What finished him off was thinking that the rules he imposed on other people didn’t apply to him because of his narcissism. Hoisted by his own petard.

HousePlantQueen Sat 10-Jun-23 13:02:17

eazybee

I am shocked and appalled.
The duplicitous behaviour of Harriet Harman and Sue Gray speaks volumes, as does that of Rishi Sunak.
It has been a witch hunt.

I drafted a reply to this, but you know what? You believe the rubbish that Johnson tells you to, I don't care.

FannyCornforth Sat 10-Jun-23 11:35:26

Thank you Ailidh, but I’m minded to think that it might be even more accurate had they hit the lavatory with a sledgehammer

Ailidh Sat 10-Jun-23 11:30:41

I not so sure that Dorries is Just a tantrum, though there's an element of that. I suspect she and Johnson think they've stabbed Sunak with great big tailor's scissors, like that episode of Midsummer.

FannyC - that is utterly revolting - and it's exactly how I feel about Johnson's government and legacy. Spot on.

Siope Sat 10-Jun-23 11:26:29

He also famously likes to make buses from wine boxes

🤣

Big surprise that the journalist who did that sycophantic interview ended up working for Johnson, and is now on his honours list.
