Where is the money coming from?

This is not a rerun of any previous Russia/Ukraine threads so please don't post about the pros/cons of the conflict etc.

According to the Metro the UK government is going to lend £2.5billion to the Ukraine. Just where is the money coming from? If we have a spare £2.5billion why isn't it being spent on education, social care, the NHS, housing etc. How can we have no money to spend on necessities in the UK yet we have vast amounts of money to loan to another country.

My OP stated that this was not a pro/cons of the war. I want to know where the money is coming from. Where is the magic money tree? If we have this money to loan/give away why are our children, vulnerable, sick and elderly still suffering from underinvestment.

It seems to me that this government has plenty of money for its pet projects/friends but nothing for the ordinary people of this country.

the personal taxation allowance has been frozed for years so people are paying more tax. Interest rates mean that many savers are now paying tax on savings as the tax free allowance of a grand has also been frozen. Wage increases for some professions such as nurses working overtime to make ends meet means that they end up in the 40% tax bracket. The government are giving local authorities less money YET somehow we as a country still manage to subsidise MP meals in the houses of Parliament. !

Of course we want to avoid boots on ground. Sending money and equipment is always preferable, imo, to boots on far off ground.

GG13 don’t think we have any spare boots to offer? Agree with you otherwise.

We still have boots they are just trained in modern warfare, which is more remote as opposed to the hand-to-hand, street-by-street fighting happening in Ukraine.

Thanks growstuff, of course it was Lend Lease. Can I plead the heat?!🙃

Saggi Ukraine used to be Russian. We can’t sort this out. We need to start worrying about this country and the poor state of our defences.

Used to be Russian? Or used to be part of the USSR? Not the same thing.

I'm not happy about it. It's just perpetuating the war and more people are dying needlessly. All wars end with peace talks so why can't this be persued now rather than later when more death and destruction has been wreaked upon both Ukrainians and Russians?

Divided by every person in the country it's less than £40 each

I'm happy to donate that

Totally agree

GG13 if only life were that simple.

I would not be happy for English Forces boots on the ground

Don’t forget that JCHQ (despite Brexit) is still in the U.K. with top Forces Personnel from throughout the world swooping intelligence and collaborating on an hourly/daily basis.

I don’t understand- Russia and China already seem lined up as hostile countries. The wolf is already at our door - we have invited Russia to target us on the very meagre justification that we have supplied weapons to Ukraine.
I believe that we cannot solve this crisis as it’s essentially one of nationalism and identity.

The wolves might very well be at our door, but I for one am unwilling to open said door and invite them in.

it is the same thing. Ukraine has suffered immense damage to its infrastructure and will need help rebuilding itself to become a strong and prosperous country again. It is a bit like all the aid that came from the United States to Europe after WW2 because they knew that if Europe was to provide a strong bulwark against communism and Russia, it had to be politcally and economically strong

We had to repay what we received under Marshal Aid. We honoured that debt. The final instalment was paid under Margaret Thatcher’s government. It wasn’t a gift, as our payments to Ukraine in cash and kind, seem to be.

You're confusing the Marshall Plan with the earlier Anglo-American Loan Agreement and Lend-lease. Marshall Plan support was never repaid.

the old adage, howcan the government find the money to hurt people more than they do to help people.......

Ukraine is fighting WW3 for us. We should pay for our defence.

Exactly this. If Ukraine loses, Russia and China become direct threats to us.

I agree and feel that the money both the UK, the USA and EU, plus contributions made by the various countries in EU and voted by their own governments are necessary and important.

As to corruption in Ukraine - stringent measures are being taken to eradicate it, as this is necessary if Ukraine is ever to join EU and necessary right now to ensure that the military budget is used to fight the war and does not line officials' pockets.

It seems to have escaped your notice that Mr Zelinsky comes down like a ton of bricks on those trying to fiddle expenses etc. whether or not they are his old school pals or the like.

Obviously, if you do not agree that Russia has to be stopped NOW you will feel that Britain could use that kind of money at home. But doing so, might just mean that when the wolf is at your door, no-one will be willing or able to help you.

ronib Thu 22-Jun-23 12:52:36

Doesn’t matter how much we give to Ukraine, it’s not in our gift to solve the problems there.

Cossy Thu 22-Jun-23 12:47:16

*sorry spent not sown !! Should check my auto correct before posting or use preview !

Cossy Thu 22-Jun-23 12:45:56

If we weren’t spending it on Ukraine it wouldn’t be sown n our homeless, NHS, schools or giving any public sector workers, in any areas of work, inflation linked pay increases. The reason teachers will strike again in July is because although the unions did agree “a deal” with the govt, the govt refused to find it and schools cannot afford it. Conservatives rightly or wrongly don’t invest heaving in the public sector

Saggi Thu 22-Jun-23 12:17:31

Do you think that if Ukraine falls …the Russians will stop there …. Remember ‘breathing space’!? Ukraine is doing our dirty work at the moment ….at least we can give them some help!

ronib Thu 22-Jun-23 11:13:29

Grantanow my thoughts exactly.

Grantanow Thu 22-Jun-23 10:09:10

I think it doubtful, sad as it is, that Ukraine can win against Russia and regain the territorial integrity it had including Crimea, given the imbalance of resources. This may be an unpopular opinion but it does raise the question of what next if outright victory is impossible.
