It is a choice the Government are making. They can find money for anything that they want.

I agree with M0nica this is not just Ukraine’s war it is far more than that.

I only hope that the EU states continue to supply money and armaments with a view to brining the conflict to an end.

BUT....in them meanwhile.....back in UK, so many people suffering from notbeing able to access medical care, so many children going hungry, so many teaching staff and medical staff virtually being driven to the point to having breakdowns trying to cope with inadequare funding and resources.

Amazing how the magic money tree can shake its brances and shed billions of pounds for wars, butso little for domestic purposes.

I think it escaped your notice that I referred to reconstruction costs in Ukraine, not defence of.

it is the same thing. Ukraine has suffered immense damage to its infrastructure and will need help rebuilding itself to become a strong and prosperous country again. It is a bit like all the aid that came from the United States to Europe after WW2 because they knew that if Europe was to provide a strong bulwark against communism and Russia, it had to be politcally and economically strong

I'm with MOnica as well.
Yes, money could easily be used in Britain to improve a lot of people's lives. Money could be used by other countries to improve their country's infrastructure as well. We have to remember where Ukraine is and what they are fighting to hold back.
Would the Russians find occupying Ukraine enough? Or would they push across Europe?
As Monica says we are paying for our defence and maybe a lot of other countries who are slow with their contributions should remember and think about where they would be if Russia pushed on.

The reason it's not being spent in the UK is that the tories have an ideological objection to state spending. They believe in'small state' and leaving as much as possible to private enterprise. They are deliberately starving public services of funding.

They can 'find; the money for Ukraine because the government can create as much money as it pleases as we have a sovereign currency. It is also a (deservedly) popular cause in the UK so few people are going to object.

What people can be sure of is that it isn't going to come out of their, or their children and grandchildren's pockets. It's coming out of thin air, as all the nation's money does...

We had to repay what we received under Marshal Aid. We honoured that debt. The final instalment was paid under Margaret Thatcher’s government. It wasn’t a gift, as our payments to Ukraine in cash and kind, seem to be.

True. As USA gave loans, they kept the war far from their shores. Lend lease payments from UK to USA finally ended in 2006.

This seems different, to me.

Whichever way, it should not mean we decrease our aid budget - look whats happening in the Sudan etc - so easy to forget about Africa.

I understand that the money we are pledging for reconstruction IS a loan, actually I think it should be a gift but clearly others do not. I always thank my lucky stars that I was born in the UK, OK it's not perfect but it is so much better than most of the other countries in the world. We may be an island but we are still part of the world and our safety and security, way of life is much better protected by helping those less fortunate than ourselves in other countries than pulling up the drawbridge!

As Zelensky has said when he has repeatedly asked for weapons "We in Ukraine are doing the dying for you."
