The news presenter has been dropped from BBC News at Ten after his Boris Jokes on HIGNIFY.

I did wonder at the time but shame on the Beeb

NotSpaghetti Sat 24-Jun-23 18:36:51

He's not on programmes nearly as much as Amol Rajan 🙄

And yes. Johnson was great on HIGNFY too. I think you are right Callistemon21, he should have stuck to presenting... It is a much better fit than politics I think!

I don’t mind him but he is becoming one of the personalities that seem to be on so many programmes.

Oldbat1 Sat 24-Jun-23 12:22:53

Brilliant hignfy episode in my opinion. Love Clive as a newsreader. I havent seen him on mastermind as yet reading the questions. He speaks so clearly. Did any of you watch the series of him travelling around Italy? I think it was Bbc2. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

So it’s ok for him to risk his life in Ukraine but not ok to make fun of Johnson.

The beeb made the rules about impartiality, he was showing his political bias . Going to Ukraine has nothing to do with this.

he was showing his political bias

No he wasn't.
It's satire. It was scripted.
Next week Starmer or Sturgeon!

As several posters have said, it was because, although HIGNFY was recorded the day before, it was broadcast immediately before the News at Ten and the news included an item about Johnson.
Just that one programme.

He's back and I can sit staring at the screen, engrossed
😁

Boris used to be a very funny presenter of HIGNFY back in the day.

Yes, perhaps he should have left politics and gone into presenting on television years ago!

Mollygo Sat 24-Jun-23 09:20:18

I’m glad they’ve not dropped him. If he’s on the television, it means we get peace and quiet for a while. Our dog doesn’t watch television usually, but when Clive Myrie is on, she lies there, staring at the screen, engrossed.

Luckygirl3 Sat 24-Jun-23 09:15:49

Ah - he only missed one news reading programme.

Luckygirl3 Sat 24-Jun-23 09:15:01

So - the BEEB employs him to host a show whose main purpose is to lampoon the buffoonery of our politicians. He does just that and then is chastised by the BEEB. Doesn't really make a lot of sense.

NanaDana Sat 24-Jun-23 09:01:45

No he has not been dropped from BBC News. All that happened was that it was decided not to use him as presenter on the ten o'clock news programme which immediately followed the HIGNFY show which he hosted, and on which he made several derogatory (but accurate) comments about Boris Johnson.

Thank goodness for that. He's absolutely great. And HIGNFY is so funny, I hope they leave it alone and let it continue to be riotous.

I'm sure he was reading the news on the BBC News Channel today. He said he hasn't been dropped.

Yes, he was.

Surely the jokes on HIGNFY are scripted for the host by someone from the BBC?

Clive was only dropped from that evening's news because the jokes about Johnson were on a programme broadcast just before the News at 10.

He's not been dropped permanently.

Grannynannywanny Fri 23-Jun-23 22:50:10

I thought Clive was very funny in that episode. Boris Johnson appeared on HIGNFY years ago during his time as mayor of London. I began to think I’d imagined but have just found highlights of it on YouTube.

Visgir1 I know it’s scripted but CM’s delivery & timing were excellent and there was a good raport between him & Paul Merton & Ian Hislop imo.

AGAA4 Fri 23-Jun-23 20:10:39

I like CM too and it's not just Boris who they jokes about. Many others too so he isn't singled out.

Last week’s HIGNFY was one of the funniest I’ve seen for a long time. Clive Myrie is fast becoming a national treasure. The BBC only pulled him from last Fridays News at 10.

It was for that week only. Jane Hill stepped in.
I believe it is scripted for the Chair person.

HIGNFY do nothing but make Jokes about Boris; their repertoire has become extremely limited which is why I no longer watch it.

They never devote one complete programme to one subject. Johnson has been the butt for a lot of jokes but then he has deserved the treatment that he's been given.

Dinahmo Fri 23-Jun-23 19:45:04

I'm constantly amazed that, given the current govt. HIGNIFY and the News Quiz continue to exist.

Blinko Fri 23-Jun-23 19:36:50

For my money Clive Myrie is one of the best presenters on the beeb. News headlines, reporting from war zones, chairing Mastermind, and now HIGNFY. Gravitas when required, aplomb and humour in equal measure. He has integrity to the backbone.

You can guess, I'm a fan.

I don't think he's been dropped, just from that particular edition of the ten o'clock news straight after that edition of HIGNFY.

I think he's too valuable to the BBC.

NotSpaghetti Fri 23-Jun-23 19:30:01

Didn't he have a script???

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 23-Jun-23 19:25:26

Aren’t news readers supposed to be unbiased? He probably crossed a line of which he would have been well aware.

merlotgran Fri 23-Jun-23 19:20:58

It was a very funny episode and the whole point of the jokes was that CM wouldn’t be able to get a job on any BBC programme if he kept making fun of BJ.

BlueBelle Fri 23-Jun-23 19:14:57

No I don’t, thanks jaxjacky
