I woke up to the news that a military coup is taking place in Russia. Troops have entered Moscow and Putin is nowhere to be seen, apparently. I wonder if this marks the end of his regime?

Good post foxygloves.
I’m watching bbc- I find their coverage good on this kind of crisis.
Our former ambassador is being interviewed now - calm, well informed and interesting imo

Just catching up. Not sure what to think. Neither side will trust each other again. There will be 'marked men' whose behaviour will have been noted. Expect an outbreak in falls from windows and Novichok. Nasty.

I’ve moved to Sky, good coverage there. The leader of the mercenaries gets more alarming the more I see of him

What a weird day!

I do think it needs careful examination. Someone said and I do agree that this morning the Wagner group was taking the Russian military HQ in Rostov and yet by the afternoon a “huge” convoy had moved at least 500km towards Moscow - indeed was threatening Moscow itself 1000km away.!

I simply don’t think it is credible for a force of soldiers to move so quickly.

I haven’t a clue what is going on, but what they are telling us doesn’t seem right?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 24-Jun-23 21:05:56

Not sure this was ever a military takeover more likely those in Government sending a message to Putin…

Wyllow3 Sat 24-Jun-23 21:06:09

I player is keeping us very up to date - he is withdrawing - Apparently he expected people to rise up and support him. If you trust anything he says.

Well, so he says. Wild card is that apparently he was persuaded to withdraw after talking to the president of Belarus big Putin supporter.

I player

"Yevgeny Prigozhin told his forces to return to their bases after negotiations with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, according to Russian TV channel Rossiya 24".

bizarre?

I sniff a financial deal. A gambit.

Like any of them care about the all the deaths.

He's just a mercenary out for what he can get but I think he'll need to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 24-Jun-23 21:29:23

If it is true that he’s sold out, then Putin has lost his best military leader and the only one who made a difference in his advance into Ukraine.

maddyone Sat 24-Jun-23 21:33:08

Well surely that’s got to be good news Whitewave.

Yes it is if it is true. Ukraine must be feeling more optimistic.

The dispute wasn’t really a coup, Wagner wanted more weapons and less Russian army interference it seems they got what they wanted.
Wagner are wild dogs that will fight anywhere for whoever pays them, most of their troops are prisoners who have nothing to loose and kill for fun. Yes really, psychopaths, they don’t respect life and expect to die themselves, many of the wars in Africa are sustained by Wagner troops, Russian weapons and of course Chinese money.

China wants the resources, minerals, blood diamonds and ivory, they don’t care where where they come from or how many die

If Yevgeny Prigozhin thinks he's ever going to be safe from Putin's revenge in Belarus or anywhere else he is deluded. The FSB will already be planning it. He's a dead man walking. However, Putin's power has been seriously eroded, as has the Russian ability to resist the Ukrainian counter attack. What I find most worrying is what the "cornered rat" response might be.

RosesandLilac Sun 25-Jun-23 06:48:33

No coup, no getting to Moscow, just wtf is going on?
Either it’s a massive debacle or it’s covering up something else perhaps?
Progozhin will be another victim of sleep walking out of a window before long I guess.
All very strange.

Grandmabatty Sun 25-Jun-23 08:30:25

So the 'coup' that never was! Putin is perhaps not as safe as he thought he was though.

Aveline Sun 25-Jun-23 08:33:05

I bet there'll be all sorts of meetings and secret meetings going on. Would be fascinating to know the real story or stories. Oh well.

Total agree, Prigozhin and his men won't last long. Putin won't want any of these people breathing the same air.

ronib Sun 25-Jun-23 09:37:20

I don’t know about Prigozhin and have no way of knowing but why is he being relocated to Belarus? Not forgetting that Belarus is an ally of Russia and is housing Russian nuclear weapons which are being aimed at NATO countries? We don’t have a clue…… only guesswork.

nanna8 Sun 25-Jun-23 09:50:14

I’d guess a sudden and unexplained demise is on the cards for Prigozhin. I’d watch what I was eating in his shoes.

Grandmabatty Sun 25-Jun-23 09:54:22

Or open windows Nanna8?

BlueBelle Sun 25-Jun-23 09:56:28

Well that was a strange five minutes

I’m inclined to agree.
But hopefully this is good news for Ukraine.
The Wagner individuals are barely human if what’s been said is true.

ronib Sun 25-Jun-23 11:13:45

MaddyOne The Wagner troops are reportedly joining the standard Russian military so I don’t think that will advantage Ukraine?

geeljay Sun 25-Jun-23 11:15:43

Seems all back to square one, the Wagner group have returned to base and their leader has done a deal with Putin. I got quite exited at the prospect of Putin being unseated. He is too clever, I M O to lose his grip.

geeljay Sun 25-Jun-23 11:18:07

One presenter commented, " if I was Prighozin, I would find the deepest darkest corner to hide away".

Oh no! That’s terrible news for the Ukrainians. God, I hope not, but you’re probably right. Oh my God, that’s just devastating for the Ukrainians.
