BREAKING: Campaigners and asylum seekers have won a Court of Appeal challenge over the Government’s planned Rwanda deportation scheme.

Well at least that will save £169000 per person transported for the time.

Off to Supreme Court now I guess.

Is anyone watching Question Time. Fiona Bruce asked a largely Conservative voting audience if any of them supported the plan to send people to Rwanda and not one person did. This, after Sunak had said that the majority of people in this country supported the plan.

Probably no one dare be the first to put their hand up.

Did you watch it?

MaizieD the Supreme Court hasn’t taken into account that Libya sends asylum seekers to Rwanda? It is not therefore an untried system.

Unlike you I haven't read any tory media today, ronib. I just go on my knowledge of the UK constitution.

Calendargirl Probably no one dare be the first to put their hand up.

Exactly what I was thinking!

Now, I wonder why no-one would dare put their hand up first?

If various tory MPs and Cabinet ministers are correct in their claim that the Rwanda policy is the will of the majority of the electorate one would have expected a positive forest of hands to have shot up immediately.

Yes as usual the judiciary has failed to impress Iam64. Best laugh as the alternative is to weep.

This may be news to you, ronib, but the judiciary doesn't exist to impress you, or any other UK citizen.

It's function is to interpret the law, as passed by parliament (and that doesn't include the illegal asylum bill, which *hasn't been passed) and, if asked, to judge the legality of govt. action in the light of other legislation, such as the Human Rights Act.

It is not there to carry out the will of the government.

The whole thing is and has always been a nonsense of course.

GIVE THEM SAFE PASSAGE.

For someone asking what Labour would do?

Employ a Home Secretary like Cooper who is not driven by dogma.

Work with France to set up a centre at somewhere like Coquelle and deal with applications there. Arrange a swift returns policy to those failed applications.

Employ extra staff at the HO to clear the backlog.

The smugglers would be stopped immediately.

It is obvious to anyone but the hard of thinking, or who wish to make capital out of “othering” migrants.

“Work with France?” 🤣🤣🤣 what a joke! We have already paid them millions and they have done nothing whatsoever to help. France never helps anybody. Their gendarmes just stand on the beach smoking and watching the migrants push the boats into the sea. They could so easily just puncture the boats!!

Yes definitely left leaning but not blinkered or what is often called ‘extreme left’
Shipping desperate people who have fled oppression, war, famine and more, to Rwanda is impossible for me to support. Thank goodness for the ECHR and our independent judiciary

ronib Fri 30-Jun-23 08:32:09

And you Iam64 clearly the left.

Iam64 Fri 30-Jun-23 08:31:05

Yet there you appear to be ronib, seeing the world through the lens of the right

ronib Fri 30-Jun-23 08:26:42

DAR well I hope that the extreme left can do likewise. It’s not helping this society to tackle any of its growing list of problems if everything is seen through the lens of left or right.

How is that Rwanda is a safe country for refugees from Libya?
The judgement doesn’t rule out another safe country so I’m wondering why Scotland wasn’t chosen? It is underpopulated and nearby grin

And the Nazis sent their "others" to Poland to "work camps".

I think many are very suspicious of the motivation of the far-right whose base was, almost certainly, even at the height of Bozo the Clowns popularity, only about 10% of the electorate.

There will have been many in the audience who have always voted Conservative but who like many others, have now brushed the far-right propoganda scales from their eyes.

Interesting that you find this a laughing matter ronib. By the way, until independence arrives, Scotland remains part of the UK and offers sanctuary to asylum seekers

Yet another uncovering of the truth on Question Time. I do hope this is the beginning of the end of myth of "what the people want" being only known by the far right.

They were probably asked questions before hand, and how do people know they were Conservative voters, most question time audience are left wing.

For someone to suggest that would raise the question of perspective. You need to ask yourself just how far to the right must you be in order to make that suggestion?

Did you hear the questions from the audience Calendergirl? Not one of them seemed to suggest they agreed with how the Goverment are dealing with this.

People who go to QT are not generally shy. You would need a strong interest in politics (and often a strong stomach) to want to spend your valuable time there.

nanna8 Fri 30-Jun-23 07:50:23

I could never work out why Rwanda of all the places in the world. Has to be one of the worst, might as well say Afghanistan or Syria for goodness sake.

The QT audience is selected in an attempt to reflect balance in political views. It’s simply not true to claim ‘most QT audience are left wing’.
I often listen to Nicky Campbell’s phone ins on radio 5. He often stresses how they work to present a balance of views. In recent times, my impression is the level of public disquiet about the way we are being governed may lead you to believe the radio audience is also ‘left wing’

Whitewavemark2 Fri 30-Jun-23 07:04:19

allsorts you post makes a strong case that shows up the failed and ideologically driven government policies, that has resulted in the conditions that you describe.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 30-Jun-23 07:02:41

The facts of the judgement are

The judgement was on the decision to transport innocent people to Rwanda - a country who recently shot dead a number of transported migrants because the migrants said that they could manage to eat on £5 a day.

Rwanda is not a safe country.

That is what the judgement was about - the governments policy is in tatters and will not be sorted before the next election.

It was about nothing else.

vegansrock Fri 30-Jun-23 06:58:49

I’m not sure why anyone would not “ dare put their hands up” if they really thought this policy would be the solution to the problem and perfectly moral. After all, Bravermann has no hesitation about spouting her dream to all and sundry. It’s telling that Sunak has dropped his “5 promises” to “ 5 priorities” as he knows he won’t meet his targets.

Here’s the full report from the House of Commons Library. It makes interesting reading.

If ever there was a politically manufactured problem.
