Want all foreigners banned from working in care homes.

Honestly their sheer bloody stupidity leaves you breathless at times.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 03-Jul-23 10:53:02

Can you post a link?

Smileless2012 Mon 03-Jul-23 10:58:59

shock a link would be useful Whitewavemark.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 03-Jul-23 10:59:20

I can’t do links on my machine. But this?

BBC Radio 4 Today
@BBCr4today
"We’re proposing to shut that route so employers look at recruiting local young people"

Miriam Cates, MP in the New Conservatives group which wants stricter measures to curb immigration, says ending temporary visa schemes would encourage Brits to fill care sector jobs.

Iam64 Mon 03-Jul-23 11:01:42

I heard this on radio 4 this morning and it’s on again at 11 as I write.
They really are daft. We can’t recruit and retain care workers and need people to fill empty posts.

Smileless2012 Mon 03-Jul-23 11:05:08

I agree that it's a short sighted and stupid approach but don't agree that it's banning all foreign workers from working in care homes. That suggests that those already doing so would be fired.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 03-Jul-23 11:06:07

I found this
www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/tories-demand-rishi-sunak-stop-30371701
Apparently they want to stop the healthcare visa scheme. Whatever one thinks about it, it isn’t the same as wanting all foreigners banned from working in care homes. However my understanding is that many care home assistants speak very poor English, which causes difficulties for some of the people they work with.

Yes I agree. I didn’t express it very well.

So what I meant was - The New Conservatives want to stop all visas being issued to foreigners who enter the country to work in care homes.

Still bloody stupid.

Thanks for the link GSM. To suggest that New Conservatives want all foreign workers in care homes banned is inflammatory and not the case.

‘Part of this proposed policy involves only allowing in skilled workers who earn £38,000 a year or more.’.
From the BBC report I posted above. As workers in care, as opposed to health professionals, do not earn above £38,000 they will be unable to get visas.

ronib Mon 03-Jul-23 11:25:32

Doesn’t mean that Rishi Sunak will promote banning foreign care workers. The New Conservatives ? need to get a grip.

Smileless2012 Mon 03-Jul-23 11:27:31

I realise that Casdon but as ronib's posted that doesn't equate to "banning foreign care workers".

HousePlantQueen Mon 03-Jul-23 11:31:29

I think this is the last desperate gasp of a dying party (if you will excuse the slight exaggeration), they use stupid statements like this to deflect from the mess they have made of everything. Meanwhile......anyone heard anymore about what is happening about Michelle Mone?

foxie48 Mon 03-Jul-23 11:35:44

This is copied from the Guardian as I can't find anything else online. I also heard the BBC radio news report this morning which also mentioned care home staff. If anyone has the official report please post so we can see how it differs.

1) Close the temporary schemes that grant eligibility for worker visas to ‘care workers’ and ‘senior care workers’. This policy will reduce visas granted by 117,000 between those workers and their dependents, leading to a reduction in ‘long-term inward migration’ of 82,000.

2) Raise the main skilled work visa salary threshold to £38,000 per annum. This could reduce LTIM [long-term immigration] by 54,000 migrants per year.

3) Extend the closure of the student dependent route, which allows full access to the job market and is not subject to skill or salary thresholds, to students enrolled on one-year research master’s degrees. Combined with the government’s existing proposal, this could lead to a reduction in LTIM of around 75,000.

4) Close the graduate route to students, so as to stop students staying in the UK after graduating for up to two years without a job offer. This should lead to a reduction of around 50,000 in LTIM per year.

5) Reserve university study visas for the brightest international students by excluding the poorest-performing universities from eligibility criteria. This could lead to a reduction of 49,000 from LTIM.

6) Continue to monitor the reduction in visa applications under the humanitarian schemes and introduce caps on future humanitarian schemes should the predicted 168,000 reductions not be realised.

7) Rapidly pass and implement the provisions of the illegal migration bill, leading to a reduction of at least 35,000 from LTIM.

8) Cap the number of refugees legally accepted for resettlement in the UK at 20,000.

9) Raise the minimum combined income threshold to £26,200 for sponsoring a spouse and raise the minimum language requirement to B1 (intermediate level). This should lead to an estimated 20,000 reduction in LTIM.

10) Make the migration advisory committee report on the effect of migration on housing and public services, not just the jobs market, by treating future demand on a par with labour requirements in all studies.

11) Cap the amount of social housing that councils can give to non-UK nationals at five percent until the number of British families waiting for housing clears.

12) Raise the immigration health surcharge to £2,700 per person, per year.

I can only repeat what I’ve posted on another thread

It’s literally all they have now, isn’t it? Creating culture wars and inciting fear of others in a desperate attempt to cling on to their seats, regardless of the economic and social impacts.

I hope there are saner, more responsible conservative MPs who will speak out against this nonsense. It will be telling - and tragic - if not.

I woke up to it! To be polite, incredibly unthought through.

It was discussed on Politics Live which was early because of Wimbledon, but you can get it on Sounds.

DaisyAnneReturns Mon 03-Jul-23 12:16:40

Oh and the very uniformed interviewee suggested we use inactive workers to fill the jobs.

So if Sunak decides to retire now, which he can afford, he would be 'inactive', not unemployed. Are these people going to march him to a re-education centre so he can pick fruit? What on earth sort of country do they want to live in.

Why do we have people who refuse to understand a subject before they spout, influencing our government. Nobody voted "New Conservative".

Shelflife Mon 03-Jul-23 12:52:17

New Conservatives indeed! Far too right wing - lost patience!!

Wyllow3 Mon 03-Jul-23 13:08:06

So this is the outcome of BJ's stated plan to support and improve care in the UK?

Thank you for the list foxie. I'm appalled at humanitarian outcomes (why the heck don't they get on with fast forwarding processing in that list?) The implications for many universities is pretty grim in terms of income which supports UK students.

GSM I'd rather have a willing and caring care worker from abroad whose English is still improving than a sullen uncaring local worker who presumably will be given no choice to work in a care home or for home support or possibly shipped miles away from UK home to fill a vacancy with not enough mooney to actually live on.

MyEx's MiL depends on home care workers and the kindest and most caring are a coupe of sisters from the Sudan where they value their elders: their English is limited, but thats not what matters to her.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 03-Jul-23 13:11:33

It’s very difficult for the hard of hearing and those with dementia if care home assistants speak little English or speak with a heavy accent Wyllow.
