I have just watched Charles on TV in Scotland with the ceremony in St Giles with lots of music chosen by the King himself. The National Anthem was played several times which must be one of the most dreary pieces of music ever written. He has pledged to make changes in the Royal Family please could he include a lively piece of music about our country and that he could enjoy singing as well.

Please. Please. Please.
It’s awful for so many reasons

Katie59 Wed 05-Jul-23 16:36:32

Yes, not because I disrespect the monarchy, because it is so boring and anachronistic

AGAA4 Wed 05-Jul-23 16:40:42

It has been going since 1745 so time for something more modern and cheerful?

Oreo Wed 05-Jul-23 16:40:44

Agree with you Aspen it’s def on the dreary side, time to have something better.πŸ‘πŸ»

I vote for Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life πŸ˜„

MiniMoon Wed 05-Jul-23 16:45:44

Oh yes please! It's an awful song. The full lyrics are all about crushing foes.

I agree with Billy Connelly, he always said it should be the Theme tune to The Archers.

Lovetopaint037 Wed 05-Jul-23 17:33:31

I’m sure King Charles could choose something that fits the bill.

ginny Wed 05-Jul-23 17:48:25

Yes please. A good stirring tune and words about our country not just a person.

I've always fancied 'Land of Hope and Glory', but on serious reflection I think it's a bit too jingoistic.

Nice rousing tune, though...

Another vote for the Archers theme tune

Not Jerusalem, but something that reflects Englands green and pleasant land.

BlueBelle Fri 07-Jul-23 07:50:17

It won’t ever change, the royals are traditionalists through and through

Iam64 Fri 07-Jul-23 07:56:44

I agree with MaizieD, land of hope and glory is a great sing a long but too jingoistic.
I love Jerusalem
Life on the Ocean Waves ?
I’m afraid we are stuck with the national anthem.

Lovetopaint037 Fri 07-Jul-23 09:46:50

Yes Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem would fit the bill beautifully.

Calendargirl Fri 07-Jul-23 09:58:58

I have no problem with the National Anthem.

A lone voice in the wilderness.

loopyloo Fri 07-Jul-23 10:04:24

One thing I like about it is it's very calm and unemotional.
You have a very moving event like winning a gold medal and it is very grounding.
Words could be improved a bit.

Jaberwok Fri 07-Jul-23 10:24:01

I agree with Calendargirl , the French have La Marseillaise 1792 which is a patriotic anthem and are seemingly content with it, but I suspect for us the real problem for us is 'saving the king', more than the the tune itself, which of course is an anathema to lots of people.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 07-Jul-23 10:37:49

I am happy to stay with the current National Anthem.

If it were to change I would opt for either Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory, both rousing tunes.

When the National Anthem was played every night at close down on the TV, my Dad would spring to his feet - and sprint to turn it off. Taking my cue from him, I totally refuse to stand for the anthem (rebellious Scots to crush - aye you and what army?)

I agree that Jerusalem has a great tune but again it is anglo centric and the King it praises is not our monarch but rather God. A brand new anthem, (perhaps using an old tune) which celebrates the 4 corners of the realm and the diversity of its people is much needed.

Each country, including England, needs an official anthem to sing a sporting events etc and a new anthem for a United Kingdom is needed too.

It's definitely time.

An existing tune with different words?

But none will be as good as the Welsh National Anthem 😁

Yes the Archers theme, and Jill's lemon drizzle can be the emblem if we need a new one smile

You know that Charles is not only king of England?
