New National Anthem

I have just watched Charles on TV in Scotland with the ceremony in St Giles with lots of music chosen by the King himself. The National Anthem was played several times which must be one of the most dreary pieces of music ever written. He has pledged to make changes in the Royal Family please could he include a lively piece of music about our country and that he could enjoy singing as well.

I love our National Anthem. I’m a traditionalist so that probably explains it.

I agree that we need a change but please not Land of Hope and Glory or Jerusalem, both hopelessly outdated. The French anthem is also very bloodthirsty, echoing their revolutionary history I suppose.
Love the Welsh one and quite like the Scottish one too.
Absolutely no idea what we could choose so will put up with the status quo.

Oh yes please! It's an awful song. The full lyrics are all about crushing foes.

I think they arevtalking about God Save tge King.....not Flower of Scotland as that is not an official anthem....only brought about bybtge SNP.

How about 'I vow to thee my country'.

OmaforMaya Sat 08-Jul-23 13:06:44

Please excuse the typing glips....my fingers must be too fat for keyboard. 😯

While I personally like " I vow to thee my country", I don't think King Charles would agree to it - it was played at his wedding to Diana. Too many memories.

Let’s have “Always look on the brighter side of life” We could learn a lot by that 😂

Definitely need a new one, perhaps when we get William on the throne … he and Kate hopefully will be more suitable for the role, then the two we have now … blah!

I couldn't care less about the 'National' anthem as it's not mine. I live in Wales and the Welsh National anthem is inspiring!

I am damn sure that the Labour Supports should have HIGHWAY TO HELL as their Anthem

Gwenisgreat Sat 08-Jul-23 14:00:22

What about "Rule Britannia" It makes me very patriotic sung at the proms?

If the National Anthem is sung then the Welsh anthem is always sung last as it's better 😁

Perhaps you should have a listen to other countrys' national anthems some of them make god save the king positively joyful!

Context is important : listening to the Welsh fans, South African fans and the Scottish fans singing their respective pieces during the Rugby season gives goosebumps.

I think there was a suggestion some years ago that the National Anthem be replaced with 'I vow to thee my Country" which would work for religious moments.

Or what about "The Winner Takes it All"?

Saggi Sat 08-Jul-23 14:15:01

He won’t change it…..the monarchy! One bore replacing another bore!

paddyann54 Sat 08-Jul-23 14:29:55

OmaforMya Flower of Scotland is nothing to do with the SNP its just a folk song written in the 60's used mainly by Rugby fans since . Though a lot of those might jump ship now Ruth the mooth has been appointed a director .

nanna8 Sat 08-Jul-23 14:46:52

‘Simply the best’, that would lower the tone . Good song though.

Flower of Scotland is great to sing. For once I agree with paddyann - it's nothing to do with SNP. It was written by Roy Williamson of the Corries. He was a friend of my parents.

I vow to thee my country? That always seems to be beautifully moving. I do like Jerusalem, but struggle to make sense of the first verse. There is a suggestion that Jesus landed on these shores, some talk of fishing fleets, but they would have been casting their nets very wide indeed to fish in these waters.

Flower of Scotland has nothing to do with the SNP. It's a folk song which has been around since the 60s and has been sung at the rugby as our 'unofficial anthem' since the 70s.

queenofsaanich69 Sat 08-Jul-23 15:52:27

Can you imagine at Sports events with a new anthem no one would know the words for ages !

Milest0ne Sat 08-Jul-23 16:16:30

I agree withKatie59. Jerusalem is not appropriate for our multicultural society. It is a rousing Christian Hymn. But Jerusalem Here? Really? I know Blake was referring to theNew Jerusalem but that hymn would offend so many other religions . We need a new one. What is Andrew Lloyd Webber doing?
