Robert Jenrick demands that murals be painted over

What is happening to this country?

Grey walls, cells?
Without Mickey Mouse?
Bread and water?

This

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 07-Jul-23 17:21:15

They refused to paint over the murals, yes, as I understand it. This is a detention centre, not a nursery.

As I understand it, the staff painted the murals without permission and he said it was a law enforcement centre.

sky news says the staff refused but were ordered to do it

Baggs

Having murals painted over is hardly commensurate with curses wishing what is essentially torture on someone.

Bloody hell. Lighten up woman. This is a fine example of the wit of a much missed GN member. Witches curses aren't real, you know.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 07-Jul-23 17:07:21

Indeed. I don’t know why we are supposed to be welcoming unaccompanied people who may or, as experience has shown, may not be children. A detention centre is just that, not some homely welcoming place. It is not for staff to decide to decorate it as though it were a nursery. Whatever the age of the detainees, they have arrived without permission and deterrents are needed. A roof over their head, a bed, food and safety are provided pending the outcome of their asylum claims. At the expense of the taxpayer.

Glorianny Fri 07-Jul-23 17:06:18

The "other side" of the story is in the second link to The art Newspaper- A Home office spokesperson
“We do all we can to ensure children are safe, secure and supported as we urgently seek placements with a local authority. All children receive a welfare interview on their arrival at accommodation, which includes questions designed to identify potential indicators of trafficking or safeguarding issues.
“Our priority is to stop the boats and disrupt the people smugglers. The government has gone further by introducing legislation which will ensure that those people arriving in the UK illegally are detained and promptly removed to their country of origin or a safe third country.”

Hope Banksy stencils one of his famous comments on the wall.

Primrose53 Fri 07-Jul-23 16:53:17

As many of the “children” have turned out to be young, adult men lying about their age maybe it’s not so surprising they were instructed to paint over the cartoons.

Remember the photos of bearded men cuddling up to big teddy bears as they were taken into foster care? 🤣🤣

Germanshepherdsmum

A bit of sensationalist reporting, one side only.

Quite.

Callistemon21 Fri 07-Jul-23 16:18:36

Baggs

And I think curses are despicable.

If it worked it might be.
I posted it, I didn't invoke it. I don't have that power
Mind you, if we see him sitting on a cushion in the H of C perhaps .....

Glorianny Fri 07-Jul-23 16:16:40

Why did he do it? Tony Benn's words on refugees come to mind The way the government treats refugees is very instructive because it shows you how they would treat the rest of us if they thought they could get away with it
How dare staff make the place more welcoming?

Callistemon21 Fri 07-Jul-23 16:16:02

Oh, crikey it was Phoenix's famous curse.
I just copied and pasted.

Joke alert .....

Grammaretto Fri 07-Jul-23 16:13:39

Perhaps he thought Mickey Mouse a bit childish and demeaning? devil's advocate here
Could a different work of art be commissioned, rather more grown up?
The whole shebang is very Dickensian.
Give the boys brimstone and treacle!

westendgirl Fri 07-Jul-23 15:57:22

I out the Mail as I knew if I put the Guardian there would be "oh well what do you expect " and so on.

BlueBelle Fri 07-Jul-23 15:52:52

Well sorry Baggs but I still wish him boils on his bum
And I bet Cruella s involved in this too so she can have them as well

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:52:29

"According to the Mail..."

Funny how convenient the often despicable (according to GNers) Mail is sometimes wink

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:51:19

I hope we will soon find out what the real reason for the minister's action was.

Agreed. As I've intimated.

westendgirl Fri 07-Jul-23 15:51:08

According to the "Mail " this has been confirmed by the Home Office.
A despicable action indeed .!

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:50:37

Galaxy

What difference does it make if there are 16 year olds there as well.

Possibly none. But that's well above the Mickey Mouse appreciation age, I think, which makes the painting over malarky not such a big deal.

I'd also want to know exactly how many unaccompanied children are in asylum centres. Surely it can't be many? How on earth would they get here completely unaccompanied?

Greta Fri 07-Jul-23 15:50:11

Not so long ago we were going to welcome immigrants with a "hostile environment".
I hope we will soon find out what the real reason for the minister's action was. Otherwise it beggars belief.

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:48:06

And I think curses are despicable.

Galaxy Fri 07-Jul-23 15:48:01

What difference does it make if there are 16 year olds there as well.

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:47:06

I haven't said it's acceptable, westend. I simply think we don't have all the information yet that we need to make a judgment. All I'm doing is not jumping on a bandwagon.

Yet.

westendgirl Fri 07-Jul-23 15:44:11

It happened, and it was appalling .
What exactly would make it acceptable, Baggs and the" one or two other GN commenters "?

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:41:48

Meanwhile I suspect the average age of the children at this centre is rather above nine, the only quoted age in the Guardian. Wonder why they didn't mention the highest age too?

You can call me out on that as soon as my reserve is shown to be ridiculous.
