Robert Jenrick demands that murals be painted over

inews.co.uk/news/politics/home-office-painted-mickey-mouse-murals-children-asylum-centre-2461147

What is happening to this country?

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:37:39

I'm waiting for more info on this story, like one or two other GN commenters.

Baggs Fri 07-Jul-23 15:37:02

Having murals painted over is hardly commensurate with curses wishing what is essentially torture on someone.

Callistemon21 Fri 07-Jul-23 15:29:13

Here's one of Phoenix's curses
Perhaps someone with a poetic soul could tweak it for Robert Jenrick:

Double hubble, toil and trouble,
make his botty boil and bubble

make his piles and scrotum itch
give his eye a nasty twitch

make his skin erupt and ooze
make him allergic to all booze

give him herpes, give him sores
whenever he goes out of doors

wish all foul things fall from above
for hurting you and those you love

Galaxy Fri 07-Jul-23 15:25:51

That took me a moment. I thought you meant swearing. I was about to offer you a wide variety to use. grin

annodomini Fri 07-Jul-23 15:20:42

Our late and much missed friend, Phoenix, had a good line in curses. Does anyone remember one?

FarNorth Fri 07-Jul-23 14:58:51

I'd really like to hear what other side to the story there could be, that make this all right.

Staff painted without permission? And?

I very much hope the plan for famous artists to replace the mural does go ahead.

Callistemon21 Fri 07-Jul-23 14:57:03

Could we commission Banksy to brighten up Jenrick's office?

Galaxy Fri 07-Jul-23 14:45:23

Its somehow linked to a general contempt for the press which I actually think when taken to its extreme is deeply worrying.

Galaxy Fri 07-Jul-23 14:42:35

It's an interesting new technique this. Well not that new. We have only heard one side of the story. And in many cases that might be true. However thinking and debate relies on exploring these issues. So its fine to put 'the other side' that is welcome.

foxie48 Fri 07-Jul-23 14:40:52

Wow, that's just so deeply unpleasant, even the Daily Mail has covered the story in the same way as the Guardian. That must be a first. Making Britain too welcoming! Not given permission! The pettiness of this man is just astounding

Callistemon21 Fri 07-Jul-23 14:26:47

Every publication has reported the same story.

Has Jenrick said anything to refute it yet?
We've been out.

MaizieD Fri 07-Jul-23 14:21:23

What part aren't we being told, Primrose53?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 07-Jul-23 14:20:15

A bit of sensationalist reporting, one side only.

Riverwalk Fri 07-Jul-23 14:20:10

Primrose53

I think we are only being told part of the story.

What do you think is the rest?

Primrose53 Fri 07-Jul-23 14:17:14

I think we are only being told part of the story.

Callistemon21 Fri 07-Jul-23 14:15:11

Grey walls, cells?
Without Mickey Mouse?
Bread and water?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 07-Jul-23 14:12:18

Who the law requires to be detained.

Callistemon21 Fri 07-Jul-23 14:10:30

In every report it is described as an asylum centre for unaccompanied children.

Riverwalk Fri 07-Jul-23 14:06:57

What's a law enforcement centre?

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 07-Jul-23 13:48:35

As I understand it, the staff painted the murals without permission and he said it was a law enforcement centre.

Wyllow3 Fri 07-Jul-23 13:46:04

Preferably more visible, Bluebelle

Unbelievable maliciousness.

Jenrick was previously Secretary of State for Social Care in 2022.

Riverwalk Fri 07-Jul-23 13:42:48

I share your feelings BlueBelle - what a shrivelled dark heart this man must have.

No matter what your thoughts on asylum seekers you have to have a particularly cruel streak to want to paint over cartoon murals.

As well as being incensed I also felt a bit tearful - my grandson is 17 and the idea that any arsehole politician would be so mean towards him if he ever had to seek sanctuary elsewhere fills me with rage but also sadness.

Thoro Fri 07-Jul-23 13:41:40

Absolutely appalling.

BlueBelle Fri 07-Jul-23 12:52:58

I was so incensed by this this morning that I started a thread and could not get myself together to write it I was angry, upset, mortified to think this country had come to this
Such a spiteful nasty thought I hope from the bottom of my heart that this can’t go through poor little kids uprooted from everything they know
I cannot wish any good feelings on this horrible, horrible, miserable, mean spirited man
I hope he gets boils on his bum

Riverwalk Fri 07-Jul-23 12:04:03

What a spiteful and mean thing to do - horrible man.
