Robert Jenrick demands that murals be painted over

What is happening to this country?

Primrose53 That is just about the most callous and stupid remark I have ever read on Gransnet.

If you live in a country which is safe and beautiful and has a thriving tourist industry so much so, in fact, that thousands of people choose to holiday there ……. Why would you want to leave it and get in a rubber dinghy and come here?

I don’t see anything callous or stupid in that.

They had that in France but left it.

They are being detained aren't they? A detention centre isn't an airport.

As I said welcoming signs might give them entirely the wrong impression- you've just confirmed that.
But look up the word "asylum" its true meaning and synonyms.
Then tell me why welcome signs are not appropriate.
Hint- "a safe refuge"

Are welcome signs appropriate in a detention centre?

I suppose you could argue that they are misleading and give children completely the wrong idea, and they might as well get used to being abused and criticised.

Jenrick is the kind of man who wouldhave starved children to make them thin enough to climb chimneys, but not his children, of course.

Callistemon21 Wed 12-Jul-23 12:16:37

Welcome signs in different languages have been taken down at the children’s asylum centre that also removed a Mickey Mouse mural, i understands.

i revealed last week that Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick had ordered staff at Kent Intake Unit to paint over cartoon murals to make it a less welcoming environment for the children.

The move was criticised across the political spectrum, with Tory MPs left appalled, ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage describing the move as ā€œmeanā€ and children’s organisations saying they were ā€œhorrifiedā€ by the instruction

When Nigel Farage says it's mean then it must be very bad, very bad indeed.

Where did the Tories find Jenrick? Children's facilities need to be appropriate to their age and adequately provisioned and staffed. A former Tory Children's Minister on Newsnight last night said he wouldn't have had the Mickey murals overpainted - good for him!

Apparently they have also removed all of the foreign language welcome signs.
They were written in twelve different languages

😲

Is that on Jenrick's orders too?

FannyCornforth Wed 12-Jul-23 10:57:20

So the murals were commissioned after all!

Yes, that’s what is being reported!
I’m ashamed too. It’s a horrible feeling.
The absolute state of this government

Wyllow3 Wed 12-Jul-23 10:53:58

One thing after another, removing the welcoming signs.
Awful!

NotSpaghetti Wed 12-Jul-23 10:52:07

That is very petty Fanny
I am ashamed.

There is a chap on James OBrien now who was working at the building at the time.
The bloke who painted the murals was a very talented artist and he was commissioned to do it, and must have been paid through the government, as it went through the books.
He also said that it would take layers and layers of paint to cover it up.
Also that he ā€˜saw children’s faces light up’ when they saw them

Primrose53 - I too am at a loss to explain why these people are fleeing their sea view 5 star hotels that cost a "small fortune" in order to be crammed onto boats taking them to the west, and risking their lives in the process. There must be an explanation. I think you will need to engage brain before reaching for the keyboard!!

No Primrose I expect they just fancied a change of scene. 🤦

Primrose53 Tue 11-Jul-23 22:30:20

BBC eight now. 86 boat people rescued. Most are from the Gambia! But thousands of people pay a small fortune to go on holiday there every year. Can’t be that bad. šŸ˜‰

Jaffacake2 Tue 11-Jul-23 22:22:06

The children are traumatised and anything that could help them feel happier is surely a humane gesture.
The other places which are painted with Disney murals are often children's wards. No-one would consider painting over the walls of a child's cancer unit. Or maybe if it saved a few pounds perhaps they would ?

Oreo Tue 11-Jul-23 20:57:09

If the facility is light and bright with friendly staff that’s good enough really isn’t it?

Oreo Tue 11-Jul-23 20:56:01

It’s been said that Mickey Mouse paintings aren’t age appropriate as the vast majority are teenagers, a point surely?

M0nica Tue 11-Jul-23 20:51:06

Yes.
