Wrongly convicted prisoners pay board and lodging on release!

This is a travesty. I don’t know how my country’s penal system works, I have to read up on it. But if that is a law or regulation of release I don’t know how any person trying to gain back his life and start over again can deal with this.

Would they go after the family for restitution? That would be a double travesty.

It’s a sum deducted from their compensation Gundy.

GSM Oh, thank you for explaining and setting me straight. I totally misread in haste and of course, there’s compensation for the 17 years. I hope that would be adequate enough for him for a new start once they deduct.

Now, as for deducting room and board - I still have a problem with that.

If someone is wrongly incarcerated, I can understand it takes years for proper investigation, DNA to come back as proof. There are cases of wrongful detention, people are released, but not that often. Still… don’t penalize them for having to be in prison while trying to prove their innocence.

It looks like there may be a change on the way, the PM thinks it is unfair.

Wrongly-convicted prisoners will not now have to repay board and lodging charges from any compensation they’re awarded after release. Good to hear!

Mr. Malkinson was interviewed on BBC this morning, he said he is homeless and relying on the generosity of friends for his lodgings.

He is jobless and on basic benefits, he also added that it will be at least two years before any compensation will be payed.

It sure is! It was an injustice added to the injustice.

You have to wonder who, or what sort of mind, thought it up in the first place.

I read that it was an amendment put in by the House Of Lords in around 2007.They thought taxpayers wouldn’t like it if prisoners got off on a technicality so board would be deducted.

I am full of admiration and support for the chap.

In my opinion he should be awarded five million pounds immediately. After seventeen years wrongly imprisoned he deserves to live the rest of his life in great comfort.

No he should not paid the likes of Moors Murders Yorkshire Ripper never had to pay anything and they got perks .I have always said that prisoners have it much better then honest hard workers .If they need care they have to sell their homes and use all their funds to pay .Yet low lives get it for free they get fast tracked NHS no waiting lists for them.

This man, Andy Malkinson, is totally innocent of the crime for which he served seventeen years. This has been proven now.
So he surely deserves great compensation.

Perhaps he should be repaid for all the hours he spent working, I believe, in the prison laundry for a pittance.

There is a cap of £1 million on what he can receive in compensation - and apparently he will have to wait another two years for whatever is awarded.

I don't see how that can be right to cap it. Surely only a court can assess his loss - an invidious process in the first place.

This man is innocent. Thew Moors murders were guilty.
