Brexit Import controls delayed for the FOURTH TIME!

(186 Posts)

How can businesses, trying to recover from Covid and the war in Ukraine, etc- cope with not knowing if and when and how they will be able to import from EU? This is an absolute shambles- and indicates that the Tory Governement were, at the time of the Referendum, totally unprepared for the consequences, and still are clueless 7 years later.

Controls were supposed to be finally imposed from 1st of November- 11 weeks from now. Businesses, hauliers, etc, etc, are supposed to be spending much time, and costly expertise, technology, etc- preparing - AGAIN - but still have NO information at all about how it will work and be implemented- for the 4th time- in just a few weeks.

Could you really blame EU and other exporters to UK if they just decide that, in those circumstances- they will just stop exporting to UK. We are not talking here about fancy cheeses and wine, but essential goods, chemicals, medicines, parts, fruit and veg, and so much more. At the moment, the EU could export anything to the UK without any controls- yes MEAT and other stuff that could bring catastrophic disease and sub-standard electrical goods, etc.

What a shambles.

PhilippaIII not a Britain that I recognise.

I'm struggling with that vision too.

Problems encountered here in the UK seem to be happening in many other countries too.

Britain is dying a gradual death since leaving the EU. Too many losses to mention, too much hassle to mention....for everyone, them and us.

Our quality of life has diminished in many, many ways.

Nothing to do with Covid or Ukraine, which Brexiteers keep convincing themselves is the issue!

End of!

Take back control my a**e!

I see a thread were people are challenging the content of the opening post as apposed to attacking the opening poster.

It's a valid topic for discussion but might attract sensible points and debate if presented more like Whitewave's post earlier.

If you don't like a thread, don't join in
That rather defeats the objective of discussion
A whole thread of “Yes, absolutely”, “I agree” and “Hear, hear” doesn’t sound much like GN’s aim of “lively discussion” hmm

A whole thread devoted to attacking the OP doesn't make for a 'lively discussion', either.

It doesn't.

Please feel free to report me if you feel I have breached guidelines.

I don’t have an obsession with any poster, and the suggestion that I do is insulting, but I get very tired of the digs at the UK, which have been made for years under a number of usernames. As I have already said on this thread, I find them offensive.

I don't want to report you.

You are intelligent enough to understand that neither my suggestion that you are in some way obsessed, or yours that another member is obsessed would be acceptable under Talk Guidelines.

I have no idea if this poster or many posters have said the things you disagree with and therefore object to. However, it does seem that those who disagree with this posters view also seem to want to stop them expressing it on GN but that by constantly using personal attacks actuaĺly give them the oxygen to continue.

But that is not the case
“Attacking” as you put it, or disagreeing, refuting or exposing as wrong WHAT has been said is closer to the truth
Widesweeping generalisations presented as gospel are always going to invite contradiction. Questioning the basis for those generalisations or the motivation for employing, them , entirely understandable.

The UK hasn't been self sufficient in food since the 19th C. According to government figures (2022) only about half the food we eat is produced in the UK.

Remove all imported foodstuffs from the supply chain and we would be in a very sorry state.

Do stop thinking that we'd be fine just buying British. We wouldn't.

Maybe DAR is unaware of the different usernames, and therefore doesn’t know for how long we have endured criticism of the UK, much of it unfounded as with the comments about availability of British food on this thread.

As GSM has said, there have many digs at the uk under different usernames. I take that as personal.

MaizieD Tue 08-Aug-23 14:15:02

Well, that would have been a sensible OP which could have started a reasonable discussion.

Not if Fp had started it, it wouldn't. The attack dogs would have been straight in.

I agree wwm, but the OP has something of a Brexit obsession.

It seems you may have an obsession with OP GSM.

Now, I feel I shouldn't be suggesting someone discussing another Gnetter is "obsessed". It's too close to a personal insult.

So why do you think you can keep insulting Fleurpepper in a way that seems well outside the Talk Guidelines?

^problem with people who live hundreds of miles away believing they know more about my town and country than I do^

That is the nub of it.
Along with the unrealistic and blatantly incorrect generalisations eg about only those rich enough or in rural areas having access to British produced food.
BTW
Is there any relevance at all in the observation that EU properties are not selling to UK buyers? (Or “Brits”)
Maybe those selfsame “Brits” have realised the grass is not always greener in Provence?

Indeed. Rolled up in one post! Thank you.

I have no problem with people making comments on my home town or country. What I do have, is, a problem with people who live hundreds of miles away believing they know more about my town and country than I do.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 08-Aug-23 13:45:06

Or even impossible.

I think that there is absolutely no question that Brexit is dead.

The question is, where do we go from here?

I think the first thing is to begin an education programme for the voter, in order that everyone understands when decisions are made relating perhaps to closer working, greater immigration etc.

Well, that would have been a sensible OP which could have started a reasonable discussion.

When an OP is full of pearl-clutching hyperbole, much of it open to questioning, then it makes reasonable debate difficult.

Callistemon, Muller yoghurts are made in Market Drayton and have been for a long time.

Yes, I know, westendgirl but they could try to sneak German-produced ones in by the back door 😲
Just imagine!!

OK Fleurpepper if you think my post of 10.13 is rude and verging on bullying you please report it.

Just too pathetic to report, same old, same old. Water over a duck's back.

I am sorry but I do not recognise the U.K. that the you are posting about.

Just because I do not agree with your OP does not make me a bully online or in real life.

If you think my comments are pathetic, so be it.
