Brexit Import controls delayed for the FOURTH TIME!

How can businesses, trying to recover from Covid and the war in Ukraine, etc- cope with not knowing if and when and how they will be able to import from EU? This is an absolute shambles- and indicates that the Tory Governement were, at the time of the Referendum, totally unprepared for the consequences, and still are clueless 7 years later.

Controls were supposed to be finally imposed from 1st of November- 11 weeks from now. Businesses, hauliers, etc, etc, are supposed to be spending much time, and costly expertise, technology, etc- preparing - AGAIN - but still have NO information at all about how it will work and be implemented- for the 4th time- in just a few weeks.

Could you really blame EU and other exporters to UK if they just decide that, in those circumstances- they will just stop exporting to UK. We are not talking here about fancy cheeses and wine, but essential goods, chemicals, medicines, parts, fruit and veg, and so much more. At the moment, the EU could export anything to the UK without any controls- yes MEAT and other stuff that could bring catastrophic disease and sub-standard electrical goods, etc.

What a shambles.

Returning to the thread's title I saw today that Therese Coffey's officials have ended the trial digitisation of health certificates for fish and chilled food being exported to the EU without any indication of a replacement. This was a system planned to end the paperwork needed post-Brexit. Scottish salmon exports to the EU are an important UK business (£760 million yearly) andd they and others will be left with continuing red tape costs like lots of other chilled food businesses. Yet another score for this Tory government. How much longer?

How come? Everything is digitised these days.

Another DH saying:
She couldn't organise a feast of pigeons in a cornfield.
(Or a run of salmon up a river.)

Did anyone listen to the piece on Radio 4 about the big problem the French are having recruiting farm workers?
It appears the Romanians and Bulgarians are not going there anymore to pick the harvests.
Now call me stupid but we have been constantly told that the reason these farm workers aren’t coming here was because of Brexit. According to the piece I listened to it has nothing to do with Brexit, after all, France is well and truely in the EU. 🤔

Callistemon ''You might have known it's the British who work at Nestlé who are at fault MerylStreep''

I never brought up Nestlé- it was cheaply 'thrown at me in ridiculous retaliation'! And no, not just Brits, but lots and lots of Americans too- living there in expat bubbles. And many other nationalities, including those pesky Swiss without any morals. How anyone could work for Nestlé, is beyond me. It has nothing at all to do in this thread however, and it was pathetic to post in order to make yet another personal attack- which has clearly nothing to do with subject or poster.

As said, same for other firms like Phillip Morris.

Those in the industries affected are very concerned about this further delay and the consequences. If some of you are not, or will not even think about it - your choice. But it will bite all of us on the bit still sticking out of the sand.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 09-Aug-23 10:14:02

I don’t think anyone has said that, but we have been accused of doing so.

Can I respectfully point out (not for the first time) that I have never posted

^Me and mine are fine, alright Jack^

Sorry GrannyGravy, I couldn't see anywhere that you had, but I was trying to work out how the post related to mine.

I came do the conclusion that there was just a bit of infighting going on and thought it best to say nothing.

Grantanow Wed 09-Aug-23 09:56:52

Oh do calm down everyone. This thread is supposed to be about Brexit import controls.

I have empathy and understanding it’s not exclusive to those who voted remain.

I also have a DH still involved with an international charity organisation.

So why do you keep saying 'Me and mine are fine, alright Jack' - very strange.

This post DaisyAnneReturns for example

And others should not accuse them of saying things they did not.

Not enough information. Could you explain what you are referring to?

Some posters should know better than to pick others up on such things.

Sorry, I don’t buy the typo. Who cares? I for one..

Some habits are hard to break 😉

Fleurpepper So why do you keep saying 'Me and mine are fine, alright Jack' - very strange.

Nobody has said anything remotely akin to that.

We've all given opinions, told observations, not all gloomy.

You may be gloomy as you like about Brexit, most have moved along.

We have all had to move along - no choice, it's what life does.

However, during that "moving" nothing positive has come from the long past/dead Brexit.

Fleurpepper Tue 08-Aug-23 21:18:42

Your prerogative. I am very lucky, I can make such mistakes (rarely, but ...) in many languages. I always understood that highlighting such on a Forum is out of order and very rude- but your choice.

Shall we go back to the subject of the OP now?

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 08-Aug-23 21:04:33

‘Alright’ isn’t a typo.

Who cares- it's a mistake when typing fast. Irrelevant, 100%.

Joseann- perhaps so. We can only judge on what they write and the sentiments, attitudes and prejudices within.

Nowhere have I seen GSM or anybody else say this or imply it in any way.

No, I can't find it anywhere.
🤔

I wish we could have a shake up and that the few GNs who accuse other GNs of being stony, uncaring, unsympathetic middle-class wotsits could spend a period of time living alongside them to see that these people might just be the most compassionate and supportive people they could find.

I think some of those accusers might not like slumming
it chez nous.

Type fast, make odd typo and quick paraphrase. Thanks for the 'respect', very much appreciated ;)

You should re-read the whole thread- it starts very early on and keeps on throughout. As for typos, we all make them, don't we?

Foxyglove - I live in a very different area from the Nestlé rich Brits- closer to those who work for Phillip Morris- just as despicable mind you.

Several British citizens around here- totally integrated, speak the language well, highly respected- and do not live in 'expat' bubble as they do in Geneva, Zurich and Zug and the Nestlé Riviera. The relevance to this thread? NONE- zilch.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 08-Aug-23 20:00:10

What I have endeavoured to do is point out that the U.K. is not the quagmire that you persistently make it out to be.
