Labour may or not speed up the applications for asylum, we won’t know until it happens, one thing for sure this matter will continue to be one big headache for Keir Starmer just as it is for Rishi Sunak. Half the world is on the move now that they’ve discovered they can and any politician here that stops the small boats carrying mainly economic migrants will get a standing ovation.
We do know they will speed up processing of applications, they have already laid that out. They also plan to set up an assessment centre in France, and people whose applications for asylum will be unsuccessful will be told before they spend their money coming to UK. You’re right that it will be a massive headache, not least because there’s a huge backlog which will take several years to process.
They’ve ‘ laid it out’ just means that they’ve said they will speed it up, we all know what happens when politicians say things.
Setting up an office in France will work ( maybe) for those who won’t set off in boats but a lot will still prefer the boats especially if they’ve already been refused asylum elsewhere.
Yeah, a headache for whoever happens to be in number ten.
There are some other concrete proposals. Fast tracking straightforward claims from countries where there is clear evidence that the person is an identifiable genuine asylum seeker (the Tories aren’t even doing that). Rejoining Eurodac.
Enhanced and supported team to process the applications. I do think one of the main things though will be the removal of the pointless confrontational approach to the Home Office by the ministers responsible. Dictatorial leadership isn’t effective when you are dealing with professionals who know very much more than you do as a minister about the blocks in the system, and who could advise and support you if you would allow them to.
